Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

I don't even consider rekka and archetype. Like Fei Long is the only character whose playstyle is completely defined by his rekka.

I don't get the deal with all this archetype talk. Gief is a true "grappler archetype" because he has two command grabs? Like Alex has who is a "hybrid grappler." So if it means their game needs to revolve around that tool wouldn't Karin be a rekka character anyway as it seems she has a small, easy to build V-Gauge so she can use her rekka as much as possible? People say Hugo is a grappler but his game in IV is doing huge clap combos and dominating the midrange. He doesn't try and make people fear the SPD.

GamesBeat: I have a lot of other questions, but they’re all stuff you likely can’t answer. Such as, well, are we going to see Blanka coming out in Brazil?

Dahlgren: [Laughs] We will have a character announcement in Brazil, but I can’t tell you what character it is. But I think our Brazilian fans are going to be very happy.

On the subject of the next beta phase:
GamesBeat: So what’s up with the next beta phase?

Dahlgren: What I can say is that our next beta phase is going to happen. We’ll have more information in the next couple of weeks. This next beta is going to be our largest technical hurdle to overcome. The most amount of features are going to be going into it. This is also our first time testing cross-platform play. We’ll also mix the roster up so players get to play different characters than they did the first time around.

But, before we reveal specific details, we want to make sure our plans are solid.

Laura as Sean's soccer-loving buddy all but confirmed then. BJJ + soccer moves. Kicks a ball at the opponent as a taunt. Critical art is hyper tornado but with a bicycle kick.

I like that they're "mixing it up," Ryu, Cammy, Bison, etc on the bench for the next beta? Awesome.

I was under the assumption they did?

A soccer theme would be so lame...

Why? It's never been done before in SF. To me, SF has done a lot of lame things, but (as someone who doesn't give a shit about the sport itself) a character who combines her sport of choice with a martial art sounds intriguing.

I could handle something soccer related as a taunt but that's about the extent I want them to take it. I would just stay away from this character if they did some kind of soccer style combat with her. That would make me cringe out of my skin. It makes me think of the King of Fighters American sports team... *blarf*

Please no stupid gimmicks like soccer etc.

We need the 2nd coming of Roberto. Honestly have any of you watched anime Football shows?
You gotta love the over-exaggerated flashy super shot the captains do.
That's part of the reason I would like it if the Brazilian character had some football elements to her design.

Pretty much, it's corny. Sean's works because it's cool taunt, but if had moves that involved him using a BBall as a weapon. Nah.

It works in Rival schools because, well they're in school and the characters are different school clubs.

I could see your point there. They could implement stereotypical features to the newcomers even it's not that obvious, like Rashid and his Genie pose in Critical Attack.

Heh. At least explain why? :x

Because then you end up getting stuff like a chef luchador. Also if they do it then it's a case of pandering and not actually creating a character that's good on their own merits.

Also on a more biased note, Laura is one of my last chances at a main and I'm not going to touch her if it's soccer related.

I wasn't talking about using the soccer ball as a weapon (outside of the taunt, which is legitimately part of Sean's game), but for example, Sean has always had uppercuts that were mimicking dunks. Dunno why a leg takedown that mimics a dirty soccer play would be considered lame in Street Fighter.

You feel like Hakkan was pandering? Do you feel like Mika, Karin, bearded Ryu, etc are not pandering? It's a fighting game, they want to appeal to a broad group of people. And in fact, they've repeated again and again that they want this game to have futher appeal in latin america, among other places. Prepare yourself for soccer, bros.

Also, lol @ anyone saying they liked Sean except for the basketball elements. You didn't like the character then.

Heh. At least explain why? :x
It's just the most superficial and pandering thing I can think of when I think "Brazil". And video games have this stupid history of "joga bonito" style when it comes to this that I can see them use. Just...no.

edit: Corny is a good word, yeah.

You guys are jaded af. Nobody here likes Sean now?
Who here actually likes Sean other than in a he's a scrappy bottom tier? He's like Dan, so funny lol. His playstyle is kind of cool but he's compete ass. In 2nd Impact he's tied for first most annoying character with his braindead gameplan.

Hell, I could deal with kicking chi balls like soccer balls. But just don't use sporting equipment in the game. Even then, it's just still not what I'm hoping Laura turns out to be.

That would be cool, but I don't think that's what people are expecting when you say "soccer fighter".

Having a character that kicks fireballs would be cool, as said above.

There's pandering then there's extreme stereotypical pandering. I expect more out of character designers to not immediately go for the low hanging fruit. This is the kinda stuff I'd expect from a World Heroes game.

Sports characters are stupid, it's good reason why SNK dropped the sports team (though Heavy D! got the raw deal being associated with the other two losers).

I hope Laura is the new "tough" female character like Makoto. Just a angry, hard hitting, bone breaking female that looks like the embodiment of ass whoopery.

That's part of the reason I would like it if the Brazilian character had some football elements to her design.

With Necalli representing Rugby(if you count his haka stomps being inspired by the New Zealand All Blacks :P), Rashid being a Parkour dude and Laura being a footballer, that'd be a lot of sports representation. Zen being a yoga coach/gymnast confirmed.

Me? I knew a lot of people who liked Sean. Not the tier whores, of course, but he's one of those characters where it feels like you're playing a different game because your fundamentals have to be so on point. A character can be "complete ass" tier-wise but still be an appealing design and fun to use, if the game is fair.

Kicking chi balls? You think that's less lame than having a soccer ball taunt? I know, you want her to be Makoto 2.0. But I think Makoto will get in the game eventually, and what I don't want is another fighter who plays like another fighter. We've had enough of those for the past 20 yrs.

They were awesome though.

Indeed.

Laura could be Sean's older Sister. Would be cool to see a connection between the two. Maybe she is a shoto too.

When did I say anything about playing like her? I said I wanted a tough female. What the hell does that have to do with fighting style bro? And I don't want people to kick chi balls. I was just using a less cringe worthy example.

Did you guys already forget about the giant football cup replacing Jesus in the Brazil stage? It's pretty obvious Laura will have a huge football influence in her design.
