I understand where y'all came from. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if newcomer is going to have something that is related to Soccer.

When I asked some people about Brazil. Soccer is often to be first thing to popped up in thier minds. I can't says that it could be same thing for developers :P

Did you guys already forget about the giant football cup replacing Jesus in the Brazil stage? It's pretty obvious Laura will have a huge football influence in her design.
I'm seeing that more as they don't want explicit religious iconography in their game, which is perfectly understandable.

Though pro sports might actually be more of a religion nowadays

Exactly and Brazil is know for Soccer and they just hosted the world cup, doesn't mean the character is going to have it. It just makes sense as something to replace Christ the Redeemer

What's with all the Brazil talk and I did shake my head the first time I found out that Sean used a basketball in the game. The token black guy that was a boxer or basketball player was a trend back in the 90s.

I don't see the connection?

It seemed that when they needed something for the stage as a fill in the stage, to stand out, the first thing that came to their mind was football regarding Brazil. That's why I won't be shocked if there are some not so light football influences in Laura's design. Plus Elena already took Capoeira so they'll need another inspiration.

It was also mostly a joke post :p

Heh, true that.

Soccer references would be lame, especially after the 7 x 1

7X1?

Edit: Ohhh, you mean that world cup match.

Roberto is an awesome character

I think replacing the statue was dumb. They chose that location, it's not like people edit out the pic when they show Brazil for any other reason, why change it for Street Fighter? Seeing the iconic landmark (redundant?) in the background lets you know it's Brazil, it's not going to convert or condemn anybody. And if they did insist on using that location but replacing the statue, they should've put a generic dude posing or something. A giant statue of a trophy is just going out of your way to be silly, imo. It's not like it would be anything new to have iconic imagery, and some has even been belief-centric: Alex/Ken's 3rd Strike stage showed the Statue of Liberty, Ken's 2i stage showed the Golden Gate Bridge, plenty of SF stages have shown Bhuddist statues (Dictator, Sagat, Adon, temple stage in SF4), Dhalsim's SF2 stage shows what appears to be a Hindu-esque deity.

I feel like all the newcomers post SF3 have not had the same kind of enduring "classic" appeal. To me, all of the newcomers in SF4 were largely forgettable.

Rashid and Necalli are cool but they don't seem classic to me. I hope Laura changes that.

Rashid & Juri will be classic designs in due time.

Ganesha is indeed a Hindu god.

No, it wouldn't be "new," just like it wouldn't be "new" to base a character almost entirely on an horribly exaggerated stereotype. But apparently Capcom wants to try cutting the crusts off that particular sandwich a little bit. Not much, obviously - they're still plenty dumb/goofy about it. But they have an eye on worldwide audiences a lot more than they ever did, and that element is obviously coming into play. Can't disagree that it isn't being haphazardly applied, apparently (take the cross. Leave the asscheeks) but just because Capcom used to do a thing all the time doesn't mean they should continue to keep doing it.

Classic Characters are classic because they have been around for a while. Can't really be classic when you just debuted.

Part of that classic status is longevity.

I hope Laura isn't just Soccer/Football-themed; I kind of want her to be a flat-out brawler, or something. Still, if they tie her to Sean, it won't be so bad if her gimmick is "really likes a sport." If only because it means there's a slight chance we'll see Sean.

And at the very least, it'd make more sense for a new character to be Soccer/Football-themed than it was to make Mega Man that way in the first 2 MvC games.

I think Juri and some extent Viper earned that title.

I think the whole Soccer/Football speculation is coming because people don't expect much out of Capcom aside from super-low hanging fruit. Historically, that's been a safe bet.

It was a weapon he had from the MM games, just like Leaf Shield & Tornado Hold.

Why they chose it, I dunno. Was great for space control, though.

Having Laura be about soccer is fine. Its better than just having her be just MMA lady. SF is all about that type of stuff. It is why people were down on Abel (who IMO was awesome) for just being MMA guy.

Plus you could do some cool stuff w/ that.

I have a friend over at NYC who will be attending & streaming the World of Capcom & Street Fighter V panels via Periscope (the former will be a test stream) during NYCC.

GamesBeat: So what’s up with the next beta phase?

Dahlgren: What I can say is that our next beta phase is going to happen. We’ll have more information in the next couple of weeks. This next beta is going to be our largest technical hurdle to overcome. The most amount of features are going to be going into it. This is also our first time testing cross-platform play. We’ll also mix the roster up so players get to play different characters than they did the first time around.

To me this indicates that they may not have the characters that were in the previous beta in this one.

It really isn't

People weren't down on Abel for him being an MMA guy, people were down because Abel is boring ass character with 0 personality and a stupid looking moveset.

And no, every time you shoe horn something totally non combat related into a fighting game it comes off looking really corny. So MMA lady is leagues better than soccer.

It is probably my Rival Schools lust talking but I think they could do some neat things w/ Soccer Player Lady.

The Ball could work like Cody's knife and shit.

We also could have our first zoner. Crazy set ups and shit.

It would be ace.

Son of a bitch, it's going to happen isn't it? Please Capcom no.

I know it was from Mega Man 8 (And that Mega Man Soccer is a thing) but it's not exactly a weapon that comes to mind when you think "Mega Man," and it probably only got in because Mega Man 8 came out around the same time as MvC1, and then he was just ripped straight from 1 into 2. It just felt weird that Mega Man's default "variant" was that he summoned a soccer ball, regardless of how it well it worked gameplay-wise. There's a reason the Mega Ball wasn't even acknowledged in Smash, after all.
