Is Darth Vader the most beloved villain?

Yeah. This thread is really about 2nd and 3rd place. I nominate The Joker for second. Hopefully Thanos soon joins the ranks after Infinity War . Right now hes just purple smiling dude for most people.

Vader's not even that evil. He's mostly a villain by association with Tarkin and the Emperor. What's he even do? Kill Ben I guess but Ben was into it. Plus he kills that knucklehead Imperial officer so his kill count is even Stevens good guys and bad. I suppose he shoots down some Rebels around the Deathstar but the Rebels were actively trying to murder like a billion people so that's fair self defense. Vader puts Han on ice but Han was a deadbeat trying to cheat a gangster so he deserved it.

He looks imposing and he's got good menace and all but you can tell his heart isn't really in it.
Give Vader a break, he's a 42 year old washed-up war veteran with asthma and four prosthetic limbs and every time he attends a board meeting someone makes fun of his religion. I can't blame the guy for not putting in his best effort.
I love Vader but I think Dracula would be #1.

He's been around since the 1800's, yo!
Ooh, good point. Can't believe I forgot Dracula. He might beat Vader considering all his depictions and his presence in pop-culture.

going on longevity dracula probably DOES have it. Not much else that's been persistently a symbol of complete freaking evil for that long that isn't Satan. And naming that guy is kind of cheating.

There are a lot of interpretations of that guy though, and its questionable just how beloved the original is- most would cite knockoffs in film or tv going by the same name, not the O.G.

Hes the vilain??? God i always tough he was the good guy and i cried a lot when that heartless Luke Skywalker chop his hand off.

😛

Twilight and other recent vampire movies have made vampires a joke. Dracula guilty by association.

Joker is a good 2nd, but non-comic fans probably don't fully understand how friggin' awesome he is.

#1 Darth Vader has the look, the voice, the attitude. Such a great badass.

some pretty weak answers in this thread.

Joker is...ok. Most of his outings haven't been nearly as strong as the TDK version. The nicholson variant hasn't aged all that well (it just seems a bit too much like nicholson playing nicholson..which is kind of his thing) and the C.R. version is LOLworthy.

Some contenders that haven't been mentioned?

Shane is not a villain. 5 times the leader that Rick is.

Did someone else kill a temple full of children?

But he's a hero for the rest of the series and whenever you ask anyone about arnold in terminator they always refer to 2 not 1. The one where he is the hero.

And even the love for that still isn't as big as Darth Vader. My vote is Joker.
Vader is technically the hero too.

All the obvious answers have been thrown out so I'll throw in a more recent contender - Joffrey Baratheon, the villain you love to hate.

I think MCU Loki is another more recent example.

The correct answer is Gordon Gecko.

Gecko is so loved that most people actually flip the script and see him as the hero.
