Is Darth Vader the most beloved villain?

Give me a break man, star wars is a pop culture juggernaut worldwide. Not just "people who watch space ship movies" don't be ridiculous. They're on totally different levels, to say otherwise is ignorance bordering on stubborn stupidity.
If Star Wars is the level that needs to be reached then there's no point in even talking about many other villains at all. Very few come close

I'd say in gaming circles Sephiroth is pretty iconic.

So is final fantasy, especially FFVII.

It sounds like you really think your space ship movies are more important than they really are.

It sounds like you think final Fantasy is more relevant than it is to literally everyone who doesn't play games and even a good chunk of those who do. I can't believe you're speaking about star wars like it's some obscure movie series only Sci fi geeks are familiar with.

And stop saying "space ship movies" like your video game is so much deeper and more intellectual.

Star Wars is way, way, WAY bigger and more well known than final Fantasy. That's just a fact. Like they're not even close.

Edit: I suppose arguing this with someone rocking a sonic avatar is a dead end. You're incredibly naive in your line of thinking and I'll leave it at that.

lol, how old are you? FFVII isn't some obscure shit that only anime geeks are familiar with. I don't even care about final fantasy - that's how mainstream final fantasy VII is.

And stop saying "space ship movies" like your video game is so much deeper and more intellectual.

Did I say "my video game" was deeper or more intellectual?

You sound way, way too attached to a space ship movie. It's not an important thing, and there are tons of people who have no idea what the fuck star wars is.

Right, I'm just too hard up for this little obscure game called Final Fantasy VII that only nerds and geeks know of.

Keep saying space ship movie, it's really adding a lot to your argument.

You're simply incorrect in thinking that Final Fantasy, while a big videogame franchise, is anywhere near the level of fucking Star Wars, arguably the largest and most recognized fictional universe in media. Star Wars sells more action figures than FF has sold game copies as an entire series. Then you have the movies, which are amongst the highest grossing of all time, comics, videogames, TV series, books etc...

I'm not that attached to Star Wars, your ignorance and stubbornly defensive attitude towards Final Fantasy is agitating me.

Don't bother man. He has a clipart avatar.

You even said yourself Star Wars is unreachable as far as popularity goes and now you're attacking my avatar? Because some gaming fanatic is trying to say Star Wars is this barely recognized cult series of movies but every one and their dad knows who the villain of FF7 was?
Right, I'm just too hard up for this little obscure game called Final Fantasy VII that only nerds and geeks know of.

You clearly are if you think the average person would recognize Sephiroth but not Vader.

So like prove to me that your space ship movie is a big deal, and simultaneously prove to me that my vidya game isn't a big deal. You seem to be arguing like your ego is personally attached to this idea that Star Wars is a huge thing on everybody's lips.

It's just some movies from the 70's. They aren't a huge deal like you are making them out to be. Here's a fact that will blow your mind - in 1992, more people knew who Sonic the Hedgehog was than Mickey Mouse.

You clearly are if you think the average person would recognize Sephiroth but not Vader.

What is the "average person"? Because I can guarantee you, without question, that the vast majority of the world doesn't know who either of these two people are.

Playing FFVII like it's some niche brand is so laughable. It's one of the most mainstream games ever.

Championing Final Fantasy 7 while downplaying Star Wars. I've seen it all.

Stop saying space ship movie it's really fucking immature and makes you look like a try hard.

Either that or you're just trolling me with all this shit to get a reaction. I can't actually believe someone could be so ignorant as to claim that the Star Wars franchise isn't a "big deal" when it comes to popular media.

You're an idiot, I'm done.

Only space ship movie geeks and anime video game geeks give a shit about either.

You're so, so wrong.
When that Star Wars trailer dropped it was everywhere. Every news outlet, every talk show, it was all over the media. Didn't see Jimmy Kimmel or CNN mention that FF7 remake.

When people say they love Big Boss, it's usually because of his MGS3 incarnation where he's 100% a heroic character and not because what he did as a villain. Liquid Snake would probably fit the bill as the series' most prominent villain (although I'm not sure how beloved he is).

I'm claiming your space ship movie isn't the be-all end-all like you think it is. And star wars popularity is not inverse to Final Fantasy VII. Do you not see how laughable it is for you to claim that only nerds know what FFVII is while being all on star war's jock?

They are both mainstream, and neither of them cracks the consciousness of the vast majority of the world. Only space ship movie geeks and anime video game geeks give a shit about either.

You never really began, dude.

I'd say Ocelot probably as he spanned most game though I guess in retrospect his villainy is now up for debate.

Oh he's dead wrong about how big Star Wars is. But your arguments aren't really helping. You came into this thread and made a jab at something you didn't even know and then made fun of someone's avatar for no reason.
That said, I seriously didn't mean any ill will with my comment.

If you don't consider Big Boss a villain, you really shouldn't consider Liquid or Solidus a villain. In fact, you should really consider Solid Snake and Zero villains if that's your perspective.

I'd say the only real, honest villain in the series is likely Psycho Mantis.

i guarantee if you went into any random office and asked 'who has heard of 'star wars?' the majority of people would raise their hand. however, i reckon you'd be lucky to even get one or two if you asked the same about ff7 - the average 35+ year old has no idea what final fantasy is.

(for the record i don't like either).

edit: same argument applies to darth vader vs cloud strife...no one would know who the fuck the latter is.

In the first world, perhaps. If you went into any random office in the world, the odds of someone know what star wars is at all drops incredibly.

Big Boss eventually becomes a villain, yes.

But his two games as a villain (one of which portrays him as incredibly one dimensional I might add) and existing just as backstory in games afterward didn't do much to solidify him as a popular character, his time as a playable hero made him as beloved as he is.

Couldn't this thread be more about the beloved part than anything else? Like if you know the villain you love this villain as does everyone else who knows them, type of thing. Was it meant to be a popularity contest?

Why are people mentioning Sephiroth and no one Bowser? Like... Wtf?

I hardly believe that people know who he is. It's mostly someone who is recognizable to those who played during the mid 90's.

Edit: You could say that Sephiroth is known among gaming enthusiasts though...

You said he wasn't evil, people showed you he was. Also he didn't have a different name.

He wasn't "Vader" when he killed those kids. And it's weird and tone deaf that he did. Like Lucas realized after the fact that Vader didn't actually have a track record of doing evil himself then WAY FUCKING OVERCORRECTED.

But I maintain it's certainly true that basically nobody saw the prequels as in any way enhancing the character of Vader. Nobody looked at pod-racing Ani and thought "oh wow see he's a good pilot now my understanding of him in the trench is deeper".

I count at least 3 mentions of Bowser (4 counting you) and only 2 serious suggestions of Sephiroth.

Back in my youth, Alex was on quite a few t-shirts, even I wore one. Odd considering this guy has no redeeming values whatsoever.
I guess Malcom Mcdowell was just that good.

Yes he was Darth Vader when killing the children.

Also I am not saying PT Anakin/Vader enhanced him as a character at all. Nobody here said that. People are just saying he was indeed evil. (Even though you are right that is not the reason he is an iconic villain because the absurd evil things happened in the PT)

The Emperor anoints Anakin Vader right after killing Windu if I remember correctly. Anakin was Vader when he killed the children.

Oh shit maybe you're right he's been dubbed Darth by then. I was thinking The Big Murder was like the thing that earned him a Darth but maybe it went the other way 'round.

Um, no. Here's the actual fact, Sonic was more recognizable among the 6-11 year old demographic in 1992.

Which, like, duh. The Mouse hasn't been in movies for a long time.

Also this factoid raises an issue: Sonic is 1) beloved by plenty of people and 2) absolutely a villain: all his works are vile and all his promises are broken.

Vader is a good choice, but unfortunately tarnished by the prequels.

Some of my choices
  • Shredder
  • Skeletor
  • Dr. Wiley
  • Megatron
  • Cobra Commander

I don't know if these count.
  • Alien Xenomorph
  • Gremlins
  • Jaws

Despite loving this design and costume, I've never watched this film... Does it hold up?
Legend, right?

it's worth a watch. It's one of those movies where the villain COMPLETELY carries the film though. There is no one on earth watching that movie for any other reason.

I'd say it's a dead heat between Vader and Joker. I love the Joker more because of what/who he is, what he does, and what he means to Batman (Batman being one of my favourite heroes). However, some versions of the Joker aren't as good (Batman the Animated Series = GOAT, some of the newer animated versions haven't quite hit the mark).

I think in reality Vader has had a further reach though.

I'd say The Joker is the most beloved villain who stays a villain. In the end Darth Vader sees the wrong he has done and he saves his son, but The Joker does not listen to reason and just does it to watch the world burn.

Despite all that we are all craving for more Joker sequences. The best parts in The Dark Knight were because of him. Nothing more, nothing less.
