I actually have the guide just haven't read that part yet. :P

Is it all included in the giant timeline portion?
The part I quoted is from Skull Face's profile, which starts at the bottom of pg. 341.

The guidebook for this game is incredible, up there with the Bloodborne guide as being among the best I own (and I own a lot of guides).

I find it amusing that everyone focuses on Skullface's "Such a lust..." one liner yet no one brings up the equally ridiculous "I'M BURNING UP"

So they could have just done a 30 second tape or something. I would've taken it, sure.

Eli and Mantis taking Metal Gear away while Miller screams about how this will lead to a new Cold War is kind of a big plot point to leave unresolved.

Even in MGS2, a game which ends on something of a cliffhanger; they make it a point to say how Solid Snake put a tracker on Liquid's RAY and how they secured the real disc containing the information GW wanted to filter. MGS4 brushed away both of those points but they were there to show that it wasn't this urgent scenario that was about to go down but rather something reserved for a future game. In MGSV what happens is significant and then forgotten.

This comparison is super flawed.

It would only make sense if MGS2 had been released after MGS4, so when Ocelot takes Ray, you know it will end with both Metal Gears fighting in Alaska.

We played MGS1 so we know

-Liquid and Mantis survive
-With no english language parasites
-They have no Sahelanthropus

The only tension they could have extracted out of it is if they had killed Big Boss. Which would have been possible for them, seeing as there are two of them going around.

But alas, by the time of Mission 51 we probably already knew Venom is going to die in Outer Heaven, and that OG Big Boss will die in Zanzibarland and then in MGS4.

So sure, it is a plot point dangling, but one we know has to be resolved one very specific way without further damage to all involved.

OK, from pg. 341 of the official Piggyback guide written in cooperation with KojiPro and Kojima himself:

"After a plane crash, in which The Third Child was the sole survivor, a chain of events led the boy's mind into sufficient proximity to sense Volgin's boundless enmity for Big Boss. With this, their association was forged: Volgin, a scorched carcass imbued with an overpowering obsession to kill the man who destroyed his dreams; and The Third Child, who could facilitate his desire for vengeance. This conjunction gave birth to the creature known as the Man on Fire."

"This was also, it transpires, the means by which Skull Face learned of Big Boss' location after a nine-year search. Having received word of their curious relationship through Cipher channels under his control, Skull Face took an interest in the case of the strange child and the former Soviet colonel. This led to a momentous development. ... When Skull Face investigated the particulars of the plane crash, he discovered that the events that led to its destruction began over Cyprus: caused, Ocelot later posits, by The Third Child sensing the latent anger of Big Boss far below as his flight passed overhead. Skull Face thought this anomaly worthy of further scrutiny -- which led to his discovery of Big Boss."

Again, it's from the official guide. Kojima himself.

Okay this makes sense.

He found the approximate location due to Mantis, knowing that a strong emotion like revenge triggers him. He would have checked the location out regardless out of curiosity to find out what triggered Mantis.

So he looked into the area and discovered that there were Cipher agents there etc. for the past nine years and made his move.

Exactly.

On a side note, the hospital attack is so horrifying that it's one of the few times I've actually felt something like hate for the enemies in a videogame.

I want an alternate reality version of the prologue where I get to kick everyone's ass, lol.

The constant repetition bothers me in this game. I'm talking about dialogue. For example:
Ocelot tells Miller that there will be one Big Boss. There's only room for one Big Boss.

Mission 45: ocelot tells you that Quiet is located at whatever place that's called. His next statement is that's she's located at that place. 1 minute in

The first scene with Ed Nortan and Michael Keaton during their rehearsal in the movie Birdman, opened my eyes on what bad writing is (like this post). You shouldn't spend so much time saying the same thing. Say it once. Make your point.

I posit this is the first metal gear solid game you've played.

Metal Gear?

Nanomachines?

Metallic Archaea?

We need an MGS6 to combine all of the repetition of past installments into one conversation.

"The enemies have a Metal Gear."

"A Metal Gear??"

"Yeah, controlled by nanomachines."

"Nanomachines??"

"Yeah, small like metallic archaea."

"Metallica archaea??"

Too true.

Though the Chico tapes from GZ probably had a stronger effect on me, felt so damn bad for Paz.

People complain Big Boss doesn't say anything during the jeep travel, but imagine it with Snake trademark questioning? It'd last so long Skull Face would take you to the Africa area.

Not to mention that Skull Face name drops a lot of central things in MGS, including Philanthropy's motto, which is super weird.

Someone needs to rewrite the Snake Eater theme to be about Skull Face. Since he was doing cleanup and all.

Instead of "Such a thrill," we'd start with "Such a lust."

You guys take it from there.

About that MGSV guide, how much of it is story related and how much is a walkthrough?

Tempted to get it but not if most of it is just the walkthrough for the main game.

I'll give you a page count in a sec. But I can tell you right now it's a substantial chunk of the book dedicated to story.

It has a decent amount of story and art. The walkthrough itself is worth it considering how much variety there is in gameplay.

If you are from UK get it from GAME. Their cover is Shinkawa art.

"Such a lust
With darkness and Quiet through the night"

Basically no story in the walkthrough part. Everything is in the back. And even there one secret is not talked about.

No, it's not.
It's ponderous how much gameplay has evolved and how much writing/story has gotten worse as we progress through the series.

Eh, its not quite the same thing. That questioning-repetition, while bad, isn't quite on the same level. MGS V has more bizarrely duplicated dialogue than ever before - its really like the characters can't remember what they just said.

And thats before we get to BOSS GET DOWN.

I'll start.

"Such a lust
With darkness and Quiet through the night"
SKULL FACER

"Such a lust
With darkness and Quiet through the night
Such a lust
W-w-who, whooo, who, who who, w-w-whooo"

And then later:

"Some days, you feel a phantom pain
Some days, you Diné a Ful-ton"

(OK, that last bit doesn't make much sense)

Snake? Snake?! Snaaaaaaaake!!!

So is there any reason Venom finds out about THE TRUTH.

Or the hypnosis just wears off after a while.

He learns the truth before the time lapse, and punches the mirror after the time lapse.

So it seems he was OK with the truth when he first learned it, but nearly 10 years later and he's singing a different tune.

I think he was in until the end. He is angry because Big Boss sent him a tape saying "YOU ARE BIG BOSS TOO. WE BIG BROS GOTTA STAY TOGETHER. By the way, I sent you another commando guy, this is the newbiest guy I have, he is Eli's brother, remember him? But Solid is waaay more relaxed and mellow. You should have no problem capturing him and informing him of our plan like you did with Gray Fox, kthnx bye BIG BROS FOREVER"

And then Solid is cutting through Outer Heaven like a hot knife through hot butter.

I think a big part of it is the way the voice acting changed to accommodate Sutherland or whatever the hell happened there.

Awesome, think I'll order it then.

Thanks :)
I just counted and there are nearly 40 pages of pure story exploration, including a detailed timeline of the entire series and profiles for all of the key characters (i.e. The Boss, etc). And this is followed by an extensive art gallery with notes from Kojima. Even if you're not interested in the game part of the guide, it's worth it. Also, the game part of the guide is great -- tons of reference material for all of the detailed stats, etc, that go into everything. Like how every boss has different damage multipliers for every part of their body.

Kojima's phantom left and the real Hideo Kojima tried to create more stories based on his legacy.

So I just finished the game all 50 missions last night. One question I have is; since there is "2" big bosses is Kojima implying that one of the big bosses was behind the patriot's AI in metal gear solid 4? And if so which one the fake boss or real the boss?

I think a big part of it is the way the voice acting changed to accommodate Sutherland or whatever the hell happened there.

One of the worst casualties of Sutherland is the first meeting with Skull Face in ep 6. Skull Face, the main bad guy, is barely inches from his face and he doesn't say a word.

Given that the vast majority of Sutherland's dialogue happens when Venom's mouth is conveniently off-camera, its pretty evident his casting greatly restricted the dialogue.

Zero and Strangelove are behind the AI.

Fake boss is Venom Snake, he was the one Snake killed in Outer Heaven in MG1. The Real Big Boss spent the time between TPP and MG2 building Zanzibar Land. Snake kills him in MG2. Real Big Boss doesn't come back till MGS4.

Also look up MGSV episode 51 on YouTube if you want to see the cut episode resolving Eli's story.

If he is killed in MG2; then how was he standing at the end of MGS4 again? Its been awhile since I played MGS4 so I cant fully remember.

To be fair BB doesn't say anything when Volgin explains the Philosopher's legacy, either. Though that seems less awkward because it cuts to a slideshow instead of showing the characters.

it was my understanding that tomokazu fukushima was largely responsible for the codec scripting while kojima handled the main story.
That's partially true. Fukushima handled A LOT of the research that went the story like military operations, Alaskan Olympics, nuclear war... I mean he researched EVERYTHING. Blaustein was amazed how much shit they got right when he had to do his own research.

Though that seems less awkward because it cuts to a slideshow instead of showing the characters.

I never thought I'd miss the slideshows. They were painfully awkward and pace-halting, but nowhere near as catastrophic as that jeep ride. The woeful misuse of Sins of the Father is starting to seem more and more like an intentional admission of guilt...

Oh wow there was definitely going to be more to this wasn't there.

Imo it's so the player can see BB's silhouette if he looks in that direction.

Instead of faking it they had BB go through the full appropriate animation.

Also I just realized how all the flowers surrounding big boss' side are the same kind as the white flowers from the fight against The Boss in MGS3.

Further proof early on that we weren't Big Boss.

Yeah, nice detail.

If he is killed in MG2; then how was he standing at the end of MGS4 again? Its been awhile since I played MGS4 so I cant fully remember.

The Patriots collected his remains at the end of MG2 and kept in him a brain dead coma, to preserve his body as an icon.

Then Eva stole back his body from them and had his body rebuilt using Liquid and Solidus' bodies. After the Patriots fell he woke up and found Zero's hiding place and took him to see Snake.

You just know Volgin had a soldier bring in a big ass soviet projector and his Philosopher Legacy slides just for this.
