Microsoft buys Havok from Intel, GAFfers tear skin off while screaming about endtimes

How sad. Instead of not crippling the power of their box in the first place, they try to catch up with Sony by crippling their software instead. I swear, if Uncharted 4 ends up not shipping with those revolutionary soft body physics that were promised that there will be hell to pay.

Edit: Isn't this something that the supreme court can get involved in? I thought hostile takeovers designed to drive out competitors from duopolies were illegal which is why Intel can't buy AMD?

Almost got me, but you're a little too notorious.

I'm new here, this is one of those Parody posts? Yes?

Now this thread is delivering. And please be joking.

Interesting and unexpected. I guess it didn't really fit in with Intel's plans as a company.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Intel snatched Havok when Larrabee was at full speed. It made sense back then. With LRB dead Havok wasn't at home in Intel at all.

MS has enough software talent to significantly expand on Havok, and they're not obligated to license all of their proprietary code. So you might have a PhysX type of situation, where the GPU physics are proprietary and the CPU physics portion is free for licensed use.

And if that happens, Havok will be abandoned by third-party developers for a more neutral solution like RenderWare was. I would assume that MS would like to continue making money with Havok and that basically requires allowing Sony to continue their support of it.

Guys, MS wants to make money of the video game industry, but that does not necessarily mean just Xbox.

Good move Microsoft. This is how you eliminate your opponents. I can see the Digital Foundry Face off for the 2016 PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider now.

DF: It is clear that while the PS4 version of RotTR has resolution and frame rate advantages, the lack of physics engine severely hampers the PS4 version. In the video below, we see Lara's stilted interaction with her environment as she moves like a paralyzed ice skater through the world. Compare this to the 12 month old Xbox One footage and we see Lara moving like a graceful gazelle as she traverses the many obstacles in her path. Hand to hand combat in the PS4 version is akin to a multiple bumper car pile up at the local fairground as characters interact in an embarrassingly unrealistic way. If you have to choose between which version to get, we give the Xbox One version the slight edge here. But only just.

MS is going to use their monopoly on physics to change physics to the point that Uncharted 4 won't make any sense when it ships.

I'm waiting for the posts that will agree with you.

You know people are gonna fall for it, since when M$ can't win, it buys.

Hmmm 10/10 will read again.

Some of these posts, wow

In this case, they buy the tech that Sony devs use a lot and make money off them.

Just like they buy Nokia and use that leverage to one up Google with all the patent acquisitions.

Just Sony devs use it right

It was free before, right

I love this lol

Wow, a lot of people losing their shit for no reason. This acquisition makes perfect sense when you consider the focus MS is putting on cloud based physics computing. Of course they will continue to licence the software out, they aren't stupid. The idea that a software licensing company would buy a new piece of software solely so that others couldn't use it is insane, lol.

I'm still trying to figure out why did Bethesda think Horse Armour was good dlc.

I'm still trying to figure out why did Bethesda think Horse Armour was good dlc.

They were testing the waters at the "small DLC" end of the scale. Funny how the same game that got Horse Armor also got two fairly beefy digital expansion packs in Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles

I just went to Wikipedia to get a list of all the games that used Havok, and of that huge list I've only played one. I'm not sure if I should feel strangely proud or if I should turn in my gamer card.

It also reminded me that I should finally get around to playing through all the half-life games I bought a decade ago.

Before this deal, MS was pinching pennies to get by.. eating sardines for dinner. But things have changed now that they have the cash cow that is a few Sony developers paying license fees. Phil Spencer can finally put 5 carats in his baby girl ear.

I doubt it, because PhysX wasn't abandoned either.

If only it was that simple.

You do know that aquisitions does not mean you pay them from the cash you have. Just like you can finance your house, you can also buy companies. But of course it isnt simple. For starter company should be on sale lol

And I dont think anyone has ever done an aquisition of size of Intel. There was rumor about MS buying a cloud computing company call salesforce. Which was 65Billion and it was said its too big of an aquisition. So you can imagine how big Intel is.

All I am saying that Microsoft not buying intel, but that is not because they dont have cash reserve of that size but 100 other reasons.

Ok, so a big get for MS, that's clear. Will this mean companies like Ubi, EA, Sony etc have to pay MS now if they wanna use it?

Big get? I don't know. I suppose they'll try to increase their royalty, but that has no effects on contracts already signed.

Everybody will have have to pay Microsoft to use Havok. Microsoft pays Intel once and the salary of all the Havok employees every week. Is that a gain or a lose for Microsoft and Intel. I have no idea.

I know lots of people who work for a company owned by Intel and they routinely have lay off every 6 months. Getting bought by Microsoft wasn't great for Nokia employees neither.

Most of havok software is licensed with source code.
