SOMA |OT| I Have No Mouth but I Will Scream, on The Dark Descent into A Machine

Goddamn, started playing through this with a bunch of friends in a group session. Not sure how far into the game we are, but we played for about 8 hours. At the moment we're
a bit after you lose access to the DUNBAT in... Theta?
We're in the security room and have locked the door, having just updated the security key on the card
. Any ideas on how much time we have left? I feel like we're going quite slowly and being extremely cautious; all a nervous bunch.

About where we are at the moment:
That goddamn monster is just constantly spawning outside the security room. We can just get a glimpse of him doing it in the darkness.

After fluffing around in there for 5 or 10 minutes arguing what to do, we made a sprint for it after we saw him enter one of the corridors. He immediately spawned and chased us to the lift; so horrifying. He beat us down at the entrance, but we managed to insert the card and crawl in after respawning. However, we fumbled to find the buttons and he came tearing through while the doors closed. That ended our session on a terrifying and high note!

This guy is a real pain though; he knew the corridors well when we tried to sneak around, and we had several close encounters. The current situation feels a bit unfair though; I feel it must be scripted to have him spawn as you run past?

Anyway, what a game! We're really enjoying our time with it.

Latest live action episode is quite brutal (NSFW!)

Oh man that sounds like a great experience. You're probably like
60%
of the way through, you've got plenty to do still

So just completed the game & I'm totally surprised, well it was a great journey, many horrifying moments, the art of the enemies are fucking fantastic and so creepy !
Really enjoyed the Game, but thought sometime's If I have the patience to complete it, maybe it was too frightening for me..
I really like the end of the game, it sad but otherwise it's a good end.. Hope everyone else enjoyed the Game! Kudos Frictional Games!

I really, really wish the monsters couldn't open doors so you could trap them. Rewards the player for bravery and means you can explore the areas without constantly being interrupted.

I don't mind them opening regular doors but it's pretty lousy that they can even open locked doors. I had to skip through a bunch of worldbuilding plot stuff because the assholes were always RIGHT THERE.

Are you sure about that?
I'm currently in Delta and have locked myself in the security room. The monster just wanders around outside the window unable to reach me.

Just finished it now. Like most others, I thought it got off to a pretty bad start (I thought the very first monster was comical and as much as I hate to admit it but the graphics in the prologue were so weak I was put off it). But it gets so much better, the monster design got a lot better with the
underwater monster
, and while some people complained about the underwater segments, I personally thought from the first underwater section onwards was where the game really came into its own.The final underwater section in
the Abyss
was hellish. Fuck that fucking
angler fish
man.
Overall I didn't find it that scary, there were a few moments that were freaky,
angler fish/crab cave/underwater monster
, but most of the horror came from the theme. That ending tho.
Pre credits when you realize despite everything simon and Catherine did, Simon is now left alone, forever, and post credits when you realize a copy made it to the ark, and everything is great!... until you see earth in ruins and realize again that Simon is still down there somewhere.
What a great game

Does anyone have a picture of this thing? Nothing coming up in Google; I somehow managed to miss it and have now uninstalled the game. Loads of people mentioning it as one of the best scares and somehow I was oblivious to it >_<

I remember saying "Oh!" out loud because I was so surprised. We proceeded to stare awkwardly at each other for a moment. It then took a nice bite out of me, and I ran away. Asshole.

Woah at newest Transmission episode. That escalated quickly.

Some say she abandoned him, others say the omnitool was already breaking down and the last scan just gave the last push. I believe in the former.
I think it was less
that she abandoned him and more that, like Wan, her stress level caused it to crash

Are you sure about that?

That seems to work but I managed to trap the same monster in the locked medical room and the stupid thing just teleported away once I left the security room.

I'm around 2 hours into the game and I'm just loving everything about it. I usually try to live stream these sort of games so that I feel like I can't just sit around cowering inside a space-closet but I did have to disappoint both of my viewers a couple of times when I was scared shittless. It's going to be interesting to see if any of these decisions I make during the game have an impact on the story.

Finished this last night, still chewing it over.

Not played this sort of game much. I think about 5 minutes of Outlast was enough. Then I got a free code for Rapture, and rather enjoyed it. Vanishing of Ethan Carter looked amazing, but kind of failed to follow through on the story, also
that jump scare in the maze was kind of cheap
. SOMA however. Wow.

Just wow.

Biggest freak out:
Getting my body scanned.
Had to stop the session there, and go have a shower.

I thought the balance of exploration, puzzles, and monster avoidance was about right. The attention to detail, the amount of story in the environment, the pacing, the atmosphere. Just wow.

Did get stuck in the environment once, and I got completely turned around a couple of times. Stealthed the complete length of one of the stations 3 times before I realised. No problem though. Started taking photos of the maps, which helped.

Not fluffing the issues with upload, duplication, & continuity scored major points with me.

What makes it even scarier is that it can
follow you inside the underwater tunnels you traverse.

Well, still 10 hours in and close to the end (I think). Anyway, I wish they had the enemies disapper after completing some section so you can explore everything. Just for example when you get the
security chip to access the elevator in Theta, so you can explore the office

If you're in Theta, you're no way near the end

Just finished this. That ending is a fucking trip, man.

The whole thing about multiple versions of the same consciousness running around confuses and frightens me. Obviously it was never going to be this magic mind swap that Simon wanted it to be. Hell, he's not even the original consciousness of Simon that first woke up in Pathos 2! That guy is either dead or stuck in a chair just liek him! I feel like maybe Catherine should have stressed to him that he would still be sitting there. Then again, maybe then he wouldn't have helped?

I wish Simon wasn't such a fucking asshole all the time. Yeah, he's been through some shit, but least he has free range of movement
unlike Catherine
, and she takes that in stride.

Yeah, I felt the same way. That's my only complaint with the story. I think they had to make Simon an
exposition piece to help anyone who hasn't had the smallest amount of existential thought. But to me he just felt like a rage infused brat.

Being selfish does not make you a rage infused brat. Human instinct makes us all selfish when we want to survive, pushing people away and trying to survive no matter the costs.

He did not want to hear reasoning because of it. Does it make him a brat? In your eyes, maybe. For me it is the perfect example of one simple man trying to survive in the harshest world possible.

It's hard for me to remember, but I think you're about halfway? Maybe slightly further.

And you may want to
stop running, because those monsters hunt by sound. They're completely blind otherwise. Distract him by throwing something.

I really liked Simon's reactions to plot developments, especially
the ending. Throughout the game he was just someone trying to make sense of the world he was in, though often times he'd take the hands over the ears lalala I can't hear you! approach with what Catherine was explaining. The reality of the situation was extremely horrifying, so I can't blame him there. I was so pleased he lost his shit in the ending, too, it felt realistic and emotionally raw. Even more of a gut punch when Simon cuts off mid-tantrum into desperate begging when Catherine overloads and he's all alone. Loved it.

I just finished the part
inside the sunken ship with the enemy that kills by looking at you
and so far,the game looks pretty good...not scary at all though.
I hate the underwater sections.

Finished it, loved it, loved it

That walk to Tau, haven been diving in choppy murky conditions, they got that spot on, the sense of oppression and not having a clue what is in front of you..

I did not need the monsters, in fact they were a distraction for me, the whole Sci-fi.... brilliant

This is good, this is very good. This might have been the rationale I needed.

On Tau, did anyone manage to get into the locked room in the control section, it asked for a code and I never found it...

did I miss a room? what was in there?

Was it
Johan Ross'
room?
I remember looking at a terminal (in the infirmary maybe?) and the screen suddenly was filled with static with the password displayed for a moment

yes, what was in there? as it still let me finish the game

You sure you want to know? If so, read on.

The last human was there, hooked up on life support but she was slowly dying which gives you the choice to disable her life support or leave her hooked up.

It also provides some more background information.

EDIT: Damn, double post. Sorry.

yeah done that bit, that was in the infirmary, where she gives you the item you out on the lift, it was in his room specifically

You didn't miss a great deal to be honest. Just some drawings and pictures of the
WAU and some recordings of his monitoring the WAU after the disaster, observing that it became more sentient. He then says that it can't be trusted to understand what it means to be human and that it needs to be destroyed.

Ending spoiler:
Was the Earth in ruins? You could see green on the surface and didn't the comet come down a while ago? A lot of the bodies were decomposed or very old--so I'd expect the fires to have gone out in the cities by then. To me it just looked like regular Earth.
