Is it common to make big multi-topping sandwiches in the US?

Maybe I'm using the word "sandwich" wrong but these are normal breakfast... things

If you invited me over to your house for breakfast, and then you slid this travesty on a plate over to me....

I don't even....

A crisp sandwich (in British English), chip sandwich, chipwich, potato chip sandwich is a sandwich that includes crisps (potato chips) as one of the fillings

A chip butty, chip sandwich, chip barm, chip batch, chip roll, chip muffin, piece an chips or chip piece (in Scots) is a sandwich made with bread or a bread roll (usually white and buttered) and chips, often with some sort of sauce such as tomato sauce (i.e. ketchup) or brown sauce.

Euro gaf showing us how to eat healthy. But don't worry, it's organic.

Seriously? Where's the sugar brah?

I can't find it anywhere.

Yeah, but it doesn't list the GMO's they put into that.

Butter and cheese lmfao, goddamn. I'm still rolling from that. Do better Europe. Please.

Yes, but not with butter as well. Otherwise, that's the poor man's sandwich here in the US.

If it's not grilled, that would taste so...depressing.

You guys are joking, right? I mean, you have to be. No one could possibly be baffled by this simple concept, or seriously think it wouldn't taste good. Unless they don't have good bread, butter and cheese.

If you would have posted this:

You would have been fine.

This.

I'm consistently surprised that a region of peoples who claim themselves so highly educated -- the Europeans -- are so inept at understanding the basics of different worldwide cultures and how different cultures have food traditions different from those in Europe. The European ubermensch would be quick to defend, say, ritualistic slaughter in the wilds of some lost continent, and yet, the thought of putting lettuce, tomatoes, and meat between two slices of bread renders them aghast. "Well surely you know the civilized way to enjoy bread is with a slice a toast betwixt it? Our good queen did decree in the 2nd millenium of our Lorde that this shall be titled THE JOLLY SANDWICH and all those who do not bask in its grainy lustre are nothing but pygmied aborigines!"

lol herd u canadians drink everythin in bags

I'm Swedish, not British... and the only one aghast in this thread are the anti-cheese sandwich people.

LOOK AT THE PICTURE YOU POSTED.

It's a sandwich... with butter... and then cheese. It doesn't need a good picture to convey the basic concept.

I don't think its a question of being baffled but more of a "holy shit thats a fucking joke of a sandwich". Sounds like a perfectly fine open faced appetizer (or open faced sandwich). Stop bringing up bad bread, butter, and cheese shtick. Europe isn't the only place with good food.

This thread inspired me to go make a sandwich. I dropped it on the floor :(

I'm sorry but I laughed hard at this. I hope it was salvageable.

You didn't make an appetizing case. Your photo sucked.

Butter belongs in the pan used to toast the grilled cheese sandwich, not on the bread layered with cheese.

I said that it was the poor man's sandwich, not that it wouldn't taste good or that Americans do not understand the concept.

You never, ever see this in America. When I was a kid, we'd sometimes have a slice of sandwich bread cut in half and have butter on it to go with beef stew or something hearty, but you wouldn't make a sandwich with it unless you grilled it (and then the butter goes on the outside of the bread). These ingredients are grilled in a pan or if you're real fancy, put in a press to make a panini.

Sourdough bread makes the best grilled cheeses.

You do realize this thread was started by somebody saying that only Americans eat sandwiches and that the proper way to eat a sandwich is with two slices of bread, butter, and cold cheese.

Us backwoods, unlearnt Amerikans have been saying "Sorry OP, the world eats sandwiches and there's nothing wrong with them, they're delicious."

Take up your protest with the OP!

I didn't say anything of the sort.

You have to realize that subtlety is often lost in the american diet. Something as simple as this (though can obviously be tasty in its own right with the correct ingredients) simply isn't enough variety to subdue an American tongue. Especially when it comes to the sandwich. Yes, we eat bland things as well when we don't want to try, but sandwiches are special to us.

Any Swede seeing that picture would be like "fuck yes childhood memories, limpa and cheese is a delicious combo. Let's go make some". It's just a normal picture of a normal breakfast sandwich.

I live in the U.S. and I love my sandwiches, but you guys showing off sandwiches with like 3 pounds of meat, I mean come on. If you don't have the proper balance between bread, meat and toppings, you're doing it all wrong. Sorry to offend you "NYC deli sandwiches are only real sandwiches" but that shit is just a mound of quality meat with a couple pieces of bread slapped on.

Basically this. Sandwiches are a full meal in the US. Not an appetizer. I'd still be hungry after eating that.

Also, sandwiches require two pieces of bread and some type of meat in the US to be called a sandwich. If its just a single piece of bread with no meat its just toast with toppings.

Butter should be used in a grilled cheese, more or less.

If I ate grilled cheese sandwiches or any other American sandwiches every day I would be super fat. Since this is a staple breakfast food you can't just go around grilling it in butter and drenching it in cheese.

So I'm wrong when I say "grilled cheese sandwich?"

Oh I see.

We eat hamburgers in America. They're delicious. Don't believe me? Here's a picture.

Except that's a horrible picture of a hamburger and my picture is a normal picture of a normal breakfast sandwich. What's so horrible-looking about it? The completely normal bread? The completely normal cheese? None of it looks soggy or mouldy or whatever, it's just a breakfast sandwich.

cuz all americans just eat grilled cheese for breakfast

every day

yep

but butter in a pan = frying, so not sure where the grilling or toasting comes in

that's all

You place some butter on the outside of the bread, throw some cheese in the middle and flip the bread every so often (takes maybe 8-10 minutes on average?) until it's a nice golden color.

Grilled cheese is a lunch or dinner item. It's an entree. You don't eat it for breakfast. I'd imagine most adult Americans don't eat breakfast at all frankly.

I think the importance of the sandwich is the same with pizza in the US. It's about variety and versatility. To say a sandwich can only be one way is un-freedom, un-liberty, un-American. Though... we prefer not to talk about the boring ones because when you have so much variety it's all about the exciting types. I feel like this copies over to many many parts of American culture.

I was born and raised a back woods North Carolina country boy and have lived the second half of my life in our best cities. Variety is the soul of America. I wouldn't have it any other way.

It looks like driving through Nebraska.

That's not what I said. I said it's a staple breakfast food so we can't eat stuff like that every day for breakfast. A grilled cheese sandwich is great but it's something you have once in a while.

???

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_sandwich

Cheese sandwiches can be uncooked, or grilled so that the bread toasts and the cheese melts (a dish referred to as a grilled cheese sandwich or simply grilled cheese). A grilled cheese is often heated by placing the buttered slices of bread, with the cheese between the slices, on a frying pan or griddle.

If I ate grilled cheese sandwiches or any other American sandwiches every day I would be super fat. Since this is a staple breakfast food you can't just go around grilling it in butter and drenching it in cheese.

A grilled cheese sandwich is not meant to be eaten everyday. It's the main course of a meal.

What makes your carbs with fat and more fat better?

so it's a fried bread sandwich really? because there is grilled cheese in UK like this, which is prepared using a grill and not a frying pan so it makes sense

you're eating the same thing, you're just not applying heat.

WAIT WAIT WAIT I just had a thought... are you guys saying America does not have butter especially made for spreading on non-grilled sandwiches? That would explain a lot.

We call that a struggle meal in America. Praying for you, bro.

That isn't a meal

Has OP gone and made a butter and cheese sandwich for us yet? If the picture posted is a bad representation, I'd love to see what his ideal sandwich is.

Butter, especially made for putting on bread? We have butter. Spreadable butter and stick butter. There's no special bread and cheese butter.

That is a meal here. Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup is a common American meal.

Also, you lost me here:

.

Butter is butter, unless it's margarine.
