Is it common to make big multi-topping sandwiches in the US?

I want to go to Sweden, get one of their "open faced sandwiches" and put the two bread slices together and eat it like a normal person. While maintaining eye contact. :P

Maaan, some of these "sandwiches" (and yes, open-faced sandwiches are sandwiches) are truly depressing. If I am going to go through the trouble of putting one together, you had better believe that I am throwing everything in the fridge, and cupboards into it. A nice crusty roll, some horseradish mayo, deli mustard, pickles, pepperoncinis, sauerkraut, artichoke hearts, tomato, spinach, turkey breast, and pepper jack cheese. Anything less is not worth my time.

Started skimming through this thread and saw the Cuban sandwich... That Jon Favreau movie where he opens a food truck gave me the worst craving for that.

To Americans, this is not a sandwich. It has to have bread on top of it, and more toppings, because in America, bigger is better. To me, that looks delicious, and I know exactly what you mean. Being from Bosnia, we have very similar breakfast sandwiches. Every time I bring food from home, my co-workers look at me like i'm crazy. Stop hatin', just because your sandwich has more toppings, doesn't mean it's more tasty. :)

Being of a Serbian and Romanian background but being born in the U.S., I agree with you. I appreciate both types. But sandwiches that tower over, that aren't neat and that create a mess are shitty sandwiches. I don't care how tasty they are.

After all these photos of depressing Swedish open faced sandwiches, this is a Danish open faced sandwich for reference:

Lol, I guess we lose.

Regarding cheese and butter, my grandfather cuts slices of cheese off the block and dips them in butter for a snack, so adding a couple slices of bread doesn't sound bad.

That looks like a proper open face sandwich. I wouldn't call it one but at least it looks like if you slapped another piece of bread on it you'd have a sammich.

This is a Danish ostemad. A slice of cheese on top of buttered rye bread.

All you need really. You wish you had it this good.

That meal would cost like 50 cents in the US. Anyone her can have it "that good." We choose not to because we already have it much better.

This is gross to me.

Like biting into a giant pile of cold cut meat. There needs to be a balance between the meat and the bread etc.

Plus the fried chicken is breaded no sliced and that kind of chicken is awful cold so the contrasting textures would be pretty bad. Needs some lettuce or onions instead of that piece of fried chicken.

Little, small, snack size sandwiches with only 3 things can be good. Like the cuban which also has pickles and yellow mustard.

A few scant ingredients but still amazing.
Dude, don't do this to me. I only have cuban sandwiches on vacation because if you're going to have one, might as well have one from an authentic cuban place in Florida

Hggnh....looks so good

Are you guys like new at this?

This is how you sandwich.
I love meaty hearty sandwiches but that is just disgusting.

I think this is the core issue, a semantic one. The translation to Swedish which would be "smörgås" or "macka" is far more associated with open-faced sandwiches, but I would also use those words to describe what I get at Subway.

I always found it weird that Americans call hamburgers sandwiches though.
Nobody in America calls a hamburger a sandwich. You might find it in a sandwich section of a menu at a restaurant but even that is doubtful.

I don't see how that is few "scant ingredients". Seems like typical restaurant or even home sandwich to me.

Man who wants to eat that anymore though? That comes from a time when food was scarce and cheese was a luxury. Nowadays we have all the meat, cheeses, and toppings you could every dream of...and you come up with that? Smh

Euro's getting lazy in their old age

This below is the sort of stuff you get if you eat out:

Dude I'm sorry but the danish ostemad is some bullshit

LMAO

For someone with such "high" standards for your gaming IQ and resolutions, you really don't give a shit what you put in your mouth. You Euros have gotta be trolling with this shit.

Hello friend, this thread had me hungry for a sandwich so I made an America class turkey. We've got hickory smoked turkey, two slices of provolone, chopped vidalia onion, tomato, cucumber, green leaf lettuce, spicy brown mustard between two toasted slices of whole wheat.

Sorry for the crappy camera quality, but it hit the spot.

This thread pretty much explains why Americans are fat and Eurosuperiors are not.

Anytime I make a sandwich at home its open faced. If I make one for lunch thats obviously not possible so I have to make a worse tasting and less healthy sandwich as a result.

Agreed. Love going all out with a full Dagwood style sandwich.

Just taking this as an opportunity to post a pic of the standard breakfast plate from my favorite diner.

Thats not a standard breakfast unless you eat that for the majority of the week?
Do you? No? What is your real standard?

And how often is that? How often do you actually make that fulfilling sandwich?
