I think that the title very slighlty increases the chance that the movie is about (Ant-Man 1 spoilers)
Rescuing Janet from the Quantum Realm.
. It would be a nice parallel.

Marvel really doesn't have a lot of female characters that are obvious candidates for a solo film. Doesn't mean they couldn't dig deeper, but sexism is only part of the problem.

This isn't a huge issue. They're not largely concerned with 100% faithful adaptations, comic book movies rarely are, I hear that GOTG is largely Gunn's invention instead of a strict adaptation of the source material.

It came out December 2014, that is why it was able to be a contender for the oscars that year.

If it came out Jan 2015 it wouldn't be able to be a contender for nominations till the next Oscars that have yet to happen.
You're right it came out in December as a limited release if I remember correctly.

I believe the rule is a film has to have a public screening in both NYC and LA by Dec 31st of they calendar year to be eligible for the next years Oscars.
I didn't know that.

There are all of the TV/Netflix shows as well. Marvel Cinematic Universe has gotten huge.

My local theater tried to do a Marvel movie marathon. It lasted forever but some people went.

Was it really only 7 years ago that Iron Man came out?

In only 7 years, we've gotten Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, Agents of SHIELD, Agent Peggy Carter, Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Daredevil, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man, with Jessica Jones later this year.

We now have a shared universe where Daredevil, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Wasp, and Howard the Duck all co-exist.

All of that created in less than a decade. And we have Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, The Inhumans, and a new Spider-man on the horizon.

Yes and no. As a huge fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn did his homework. The characters are incredibly faithful and he absolutely, totally knows their histories down to insane nerd-levels of detail. He did what a good director does and adapted that material in a way he best saw fit, but they were not unrecognizable. The Groot in the films is the Groot I loved years before in the comics.

Gunn said GOTG2 was his own completely original story which I think is way cool

Seriously. I was having a conversation with 12 year old me and this blew his mind. Who would believe it back then?

She-Hulk, anyone?

Only if she bumps into Daredevil in court!

Seriously, though, I demand Jennifer Walters on the big screen.

Black Panther is really 2018? So dudes just going to be doing cameos for 3 years?

Huh?

He has a major part in Civil War and his solo movie is two years after that.

It was exciting up to the first Avengers film, but has basically been spinning its wheels since.

"spinning its wheels"

Iron Man cures his health problems, SHIELD falls and The Winter Soldier is freed from Hydra, The Falcon teams up with Captain America, The Guardians of the Galaxy are formed, Loki usurps the throne of Asgard, The Scarlet Witch is created, Ultron almost destroys the planet, The Vision is born, Iron Man retires from The Avengers and The New Avengers are formed, and Thanos prepares to personally collect the Infinity Stones. The Hulk goes into hiding. Ant-Man goes public and The Wasp is given her suit. The Kree are discovered by SHIELD and new Inhumans are being born all over the planet. The Devil of Hell's Kitchen begins taking action.

This all happened in Phase 2.

"Spinning its wheels" my ass.

The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Daredevil are "spinning their wheels"?

The best stuff in Phase 2 blows the best stuff in Phase 1 out of the water.

Most likely it went wide in Jan. Same with American Sniper. They make its date with a few theaters in Dec just for award season, but make its bank in Jan/Feb.

Definitely a good move for Marvel. BP was schedule to come out 2 weeks after Jurassic World II. Ant-Man should fair better due to being a more established. While BP gets to be the first blockbuster of the year, during the time when there should be zero competition for. What comes out in Feb are wide releases of oscar films, romance, and horror. Nothing with mass appeal like this.

Ant-Man ended up as like my 5th favourite Marvel film, so petty pleased its getting a sequel and now free from Wright's terrible legacy on it.

Also Captain Marvel comics to stay clueless until 2021. I can just see script writers and directors holding their hands up sighing: "She has no good story arcs beyond her origin!" and they're right.

Cameo was too strong of a word. It's just weird having him as a featured character in other movies, and then not giving him a solo film till years later. It comes off as a reaction to the cries for a lack of diversity within Marvel films.

Carol has almost no history as a solo hero

Her last series before they made her Captain Marvel ran for 50 issues.

That said, I will concede that this had more validity back when I was certain that Ant-Man wouldn't get a sequel. Neither Pym nor Lang has a very long solo history, either.

It's going to keep happening because Marvel doesn't want to devote their entire first films to introductions and origin stories. It's a part of the benefit of the MCU, they can introduce characters and build up their popularity before the solo film.

It's happening with BP and Spidey and its gonna happen with Captain Marvel and various others.

Spider-man is premiering in the same film and not getting a movie until 2019. :P

The current Nick Spencer Ant-Man run is orders of magnitude better than... well potentially Carols ever been. Sure its not super long, but its already offered up tons of material to work with.

I think Carols best plot-arc was when she was getting over alcoholism and shit with Stark in an Iron Man run. But well, can't do that so... *empty shrugging gesture*

But Pym has one of the most interesting history's among all superheroes, it is most of the most "humnan" ones.

That's an entirely different situation. They struck a deal with Sony, and then moved the Earth to accommodate a Spiderman film (ie. pushing everything back, including Black Panther) for a quick turnaround by 2017.

Also weird that Ant Man is in between infinity wars. Almost lowers the stakes already, if anyone gets what I mean? Like, there's no way he can be in that much trouble (unless the first is entirely set up)

Ms Marvel, as new as it is, is better than Carol's ever been.

Carol is just a character in dire need of a breath of fresh air and total rework.

It could take place before infinity war.
