While I know that the odds of it happening are slim to none, I'd totally be for switching over to a non-partisan Speaker.
Nah. No way some embarrassing, divisive Tea Partier is getting the Speakership. The Republicans are morons but they at least know they have to put on a good face on the national stage and find someone who has some hope of unifying the caucus.meet your new speaker

Politically, politicians run, at times, because they present a good contrast with certain issues. I'm half joking but the First Lady would provide an excellent contrast to a potential Speaker of the House who attends David Duke conferences, voter rights issues, BLM issues. Michelle would crater any Democratic support from the black community for Bernie and Hillary and, as they say, se people just want to see these world burn. If Black people get blamed for anything politically this cycle, let's get blamed for something worthy.I don't understand this post.
There was also a wealth of buzzing amidst the chaos about a letter sent by Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) on Tuesday to Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.).
In the letter, Jones called for any leadership candidate who has committed misdeeds since joining Congress to drop out of the running. He did not specify what he was referring to.
Ive had the pleasure of serving the third district of North Carolina for the past 20 years in Congress, Jones wrote.
Some of the most difficult times have been when our Republican leaders or potential Republican leaders must step down because of skeletons in their closets. Weve seen it with former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Bob Livingston, who ran for Speaker in 1998 As members of the House of Representatives, we need to be able to represent the will of the people unhindered by potentially embarrassing scandals.
Im all for Louie Gohmert

Why not just go full on bat shit at the top
Speaker Boehner then immediately moved to adjourn the meeting. Rooney said there was "total shock" and some members were audibly crying.
Ok, so Boehner says he won't leave until a successor is picked.
So now what if eventually the Republicans can't pick anyone, and a few moderates split off to back a centrist Dem.
Now, the conservatives crawl back to Boehner, begging him to cancel his resignation so they can stop the be Dem speaker from taking power.
And Boehner just laughs, enjoying the sweetest vengeance that ever was as he walks out of the Capitol forever.

Louie Gohmert please.
This is what it looks like when a Party rots from the inside out.
This article has the video of Charlie Dent's full interview.

Its 1:46 long and worth watching the entire thing.
Part of the reason he talked about bipartisan vote of the next speaker is because they should not appease rejectionists who have no interest in governing

Just read up on him and he seems to be one of the few moderates left.Dent is an interesting character, because he's a popular Republican in a Democratic district. He ran unopposed last election, so the only way he can be forced out is from a primary challenge.
Boehner cancelled his appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show tonight. Shit is serious.

And the rest of us have to be subject to the political circus that is the House GOP.And all the members are doing is crying in the coatroom. Unbelieveable.
*munches popcorn*
this is amazing political theater.
Hope the Republican party eats itself.

But this was happening before Obama.
I would like to announce my candidacy for speaker of the house. I can promise no taxes and vending machines in the cafeteria. #CrunchyFrog4lyfe #greenisgood #nothingbettertodo
I agree with Eidan. It started with Nixon's Southern Strategy. That kicked off the realignment that pushed most moderate/liberal Republicans either out of office or into the Democratic party, and pushed conservative Democrats/Dixiecrats to switch parties (or, in fewer cases (?), switch policies and stay with the Dems.)I don't think it was. You had the normal pendulum swing you see in American politics but the real hard right veer was in 2008-10.
The left and right fought bitterly during the Bush years but it was nothing like we see now. 9/11 may have delayed the inevitable though, I dunno.
That has already happened. The problem is that we are still going to have to deal with whatever it *shits out.

By the time we got to GWB, Karl Rove was explicitly guiding the party not towards what could get the most votes in Congress, but to the most extreme thing that could still get 50%+1 votes in the legislatures. Plus, we saw right wingers openly calling lefties and Dems traitors almost all through the GWB years.
Obama's election may have been another log on the fire, but they have been this crazy since well before he got elected.
Could we see a breakup of the Republican party? A three-party system? Multi-party?

but.... aren't you Canadian?
Racist. I have added food coloring to my IV injections so I literally bleed red white and blue (I'm not sure where the white came from I should get that looked at)
If Boehner won't leave until a speaker is picked, and the caucus never picks a speaker, does that mean Boehner will just keep continuing as speaker all the way until January 2017?
