My daughter is terrible at Mario Kart 8 and needs advice

GAF I need your help. Here are the fast facts to help you assess the sitch:

  • She enjoys playing 50 cc and knows most of the tracks and probably half of the shortcuts.
  • She is easily distracted by objects off track, like the Electrodome course or the boxes on the luggage belt in the last bit of the Sunshine Airport course.
  • She usually gets 3-5th place when focusing. If she's 1st and loses her spot near the end of the race, she gets mad and stops right before finishing the race, plummeting down to 6th and 7th.
  • She has difficulty drifting.
  • She sometimes does the tricks but then tries to do them off normal surfaces.
  • She has learned how to use all the items appropriately.
  • She prefers to use her mother's Mii with a high acceleration kart.
  • She is almost 2.5 years old.

What can be done to help her focus on the race and not be easily distracted? What's a fast way to teach drifting/boost?

Have her learn how to play smash brothers with items on. Then, when she gets to be average/mediocre at that, give her back to Mario Kart and watch as an average smash player becomes a good mario kart player.

I'd say she is doing great for 2.5 years old.

My 4 year old does about the same.

Just be patient and don't rush her. She will figure it out in time. Being supportive is the best thing to do here.

I don't know if you know this, there's a reason why people use "attention span of a toddler" as a pejorative.

Racing games are a bit difficult for kids to get the grasp of at a incredibly young age. 2.5 be happy that she can move around collecting things with accuracy.

Just let her win or lose. Tell her having fun is all that matters and everything will be OK. She's really young as well so don't let the competitive nature of video games get in her enjoyment of playing them.

I dunno, expecting a 2.5 year old to not get distracted by flashy visuals is like asking a cat to not chase a string

Most people playing have 30 years on her and are worse anyway, I wouldn't sweat it

This is a stealth "my 2.5 year old is better than your kid" thread, isn't it?

It's a stealth my 2.5 year old is better than you thread

if i had a kid, i wouldn't try to teach them more serious tricks until they were like 6-7. at that age it's all about doing random stuff.

MK is also a game that's quite hectic even on the lowest settings. Mario Party would be a better game to play for her since easy mode there is very forgiving.

If she's 2.5 years old and confused by the bright lights of Electrodrome, there's no way she'll survive in the mega-cities of the future, when everything is neon and has "neo" affixed to it.

Do her a favor, drive out to the woods, and release her to the wilderness.

We all know that feel :(

At 2.5 years she should have mastered Mario Kart by now and be playing F-Zero GX. Feel the shame.
