September 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes October 13th

They care about profitability, but being relevant in US is their highest priority. And losing money on hardware doesn't mean Xbox won't be profitable, after all, consoles get most of their profits from selling software.

And they're letting Halo 5 sell the system for now, but its effect won't last forever especially when CoD and SWBF are releasing next month. That's why I suspect MS will cut the price next month around SWBF release to make sure their momentum stays higher than PS4's.

If they keep cutting the price of the XB1, sure it will get a boost but in the long run they are just devaluing the console. People will just say why buy it now when it'll be cheaper next year. That also means they won't be able to do price cuts when the droughts come in the middle of the gen while Sony can. I just can see MS keep lowering the price when their R&D or BOH aren't going down like Sony's.

A console doesn't need to be in "first place" to be relevant. The Xbox One can cruise in a comfy second behind the PS4 and still be profitable and relevant.

That white gears bundle is already discounted by $20. Maybe that's the retailer
( Walmart) or maybe it's a sign to come. $379 & $329 bundles
That's what I think aswell, either a $50 price cut or a smaller one ($329 & $379).

There's no way MS stays at the same price as PS4 for November & December, they'd get destroyed in sales. Just look at the bundles, most of them have price cut written all over it. I mean really, lego the movie game? lol.

It's kinda funny that what we're discussing here is October's performance (admittedly I'm one of those who started this though :D)

I don't really think they'd get destroyed. The Fallout bundle would probably be their Main bundle and I think that would sell just fine, followed by the gears bundle and holiday 3 pack. They may not outsell the pa4 but they could still move a healthy number of consoles and at a higher price

The Halo bundle is $500 because the target demo they are trying to sell it to will buy it at that price
I saw that, the price point is ridiculous. I believe one can get a Forza 1TB bundle, buy Halo 5 separate and still save $40 while having 2 games instead of 1 to boot.

I'm curious if Halo's ESRB rating will have an effect on the game saleswise (positively or negative). If you didn't know, it's the first main Halo game (as in the numbered games) to be rated T for Teen. Now, one could assume more younger players will be able to get their hands on the game. But as we know, a M rating has not been a deterrent for younger players (it in fact makes them want the game more) and the sales show it. How many times to we hear stories about parents buying their children Call of Duty's or GTA's or whatnot? From from what I understand (I actually heard this from a die hard Halo fan, but don't know if its true or not) but Halo 1 was actually only rated M because the higher difficulties apparently included more curse words. I still don't buy that, but whatever.

I feel like the move to T could of been for sales reasons, but Halo in general has always been a light M.

My point exactly. They should just take it slow and focus on profits.
Not this easy. If they keep the price up they would have more profit per console sold. But what if the console just doesn't sell at this price? We already saw that Xbox sells well when heavily discounted (last holiday season).
Halo is the huge chance to either boost sales or profit for sure. Let's see if it has enough appeal to secure both at the same time.

Being happy to sell less but with profit sounds nice and dandy, but will surely lead to less software sales, subscritions and market influence.
And of course it's difficult to justify huge marketing and overhead when you prepare for comfy second place.

Possibly Spencer and friends go with best intentions a re-established high pricepoint into this season and end up like last year.

Can we expect the PS4 to be around 28.5-29 million shipped ?

History tells us that PS4 usually sells 1 million per month. But this was a summer quarter, and there were not many big games in it. Only truly big release was MGSV in early September.

Still, 29M is very possible.

Hi guys, interesting consideration.
In 2008, the second year of market, the Wii has sold 10.15 million unit in the US according to NPD, and 4.5 million for the firsts 8 months.
So far, XB1 and PS4 combined have sold 3.67 million for the firsts 8 months of 2015... Do you guys think XB1 and PS4 can close this gap and sell more than what sold the Wii in 2008?

PS4 and XB1 need to sell combined nearly 6.5 million.

They'll probably wait until holidays are over to announce 30mil milestone (once they reach it, of course).
Edit: PSX perhaps?

This part was absolute necessary? I mean... of course they will... i swear i will eat my PS4 if it will sell less than 30 million this year.

I retract my statement about the XB1 selling more than the PS4 in October, I overestimated the Halo bundle and underestimated the UC bundle/price cut.

...
Should have just waited until the game launched at this point (haha).

Just 7 more days and we should have a pretty clear picture imo.

I have to admit I'm surprised we haven't seen a $349 bundle make inroads yet on the Amazon rankings (at least not yet).

The $399 Forza bundle has been stuck in the 80-100 ranks forever in the hourly, and on the monthly October chart for now there's nothing but the $499 Halo 5 bundle shouldering the sales atm.
It's weird, 9 days away from the release of Halo 5 imo.

Told ya guys that Halo is not the beast it once was...

Does this person work in retail?

No, I just assumed that XB1 will dominate October because of Halo.

It's still hard to tell because Halo didn't launch yet, the XB1 could have its biggest week ever when Halo launches. But right now it looks like the PS4 is quite comfortably leading October based on Amazon's monthly rankings (not hourly, that thing is useless lol).

Since things seem to be really focused on Amazon here, the Halo bundle is currently the top console SKU and we're (as you said) nine days from release. I don't see how the stats being discussed support the conclusions being made when things should only go up at least until the game launches. That's outside of the fact that it's still a bit too early to be making these statements anyway (IMO). The game still hasn't launched yet.

Yeah, I wouldn't rule out an XB1 win just yet, people might pick up an XB1 and Halo 5 individually when it launches.

the only thing anyone can say is that who ever wins won't be by much

Yeah, October is MS's biggest chance of getting a win until Gears or another price cut.

MS only has two big sellers, and they don't have third party partnerships anymore to carry them, they have Fallout, but as luck would have it, their competition has two vastly bigger third party games that launch in the same month.

No, you're right. That was redundand, poorly thought out and worded. It's obvious they will ship more than that during the holiday period.

Yeah, I don't think we have the full picture yet to make conclusions this early.

Don't know how the new ($400 and less) bundles coming this month will do (how much they will add to the total), don't know how much pre-orders from previous months will add on to this month, don't know how many will do what you said in your post and this is all on top of signs that "Halo Hype" is building up as we get closer to launch. Just too many "what ifs" right now.

I definitely feel the same way -- at least so far.
