I'm all for having a PM with personality, Justin just seems like a 20 something year old stuck in a 43 year olds body.

With all the super old people in politics in general, I welcome that.

Also times change, and besides 40 is the new 20 or whatever.

Back to celebrating!

I mean come on...

...such a hard farking choice here.

Americans would have voted for Harper for being loyal and keeping it real or some bullshit. =/

Pierre looks like a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Character
lmao

Its all oh shit get the liberals out, then oh my god get them in.

Mark my words next it will be oh my god hes ruining everything get him out

Rinse and repeat

I'm not surprised. It seemed a given that Trudeau and the Liberals were going to win.

I wasn't able to vote.

It will be nice to have a PM with a personality as others have said. Hopefully he can help the economy, though.

I'm curious why the middle of the province is still strongly conservative compared to other regions. It can't be just "radio poubelle" as gutter keep trying to tell us. We even managed 2 liberal ridings in Quebec city.

Quebec is just a rainbow of parties.

those are regions that used to Federally elect Crediste MPs from Real Caoutte's rural social-conservative party le ``Credit Social``. And the same places that used to be big provincially for Maurice Duplessis' Union Nationale.

Just look where the ADQ and the CAQ used to be strong provincially to find ancient pockets of social-conservatives here and there in those places

You understand that it's not the same people that were in charge before right? Years have passed, the names change.

All the Canadians I'm buddies with in social media are super happy.

Was Harper that bad? I'm an American so I'm ignorant about Canadian politics.

Think of Harper as a canadian version of Bush. And not in a necessarily "nicer" way too.

He was bad in a lot of ways. His policies were obviously conservative, but the biggest problem was his total contempt for democracy and parliament, and how his entire strategy for winning governance was to divide the country hard.

He also had the worst tendency to only really govern for his base, and many federal benefits went overwhelmingly to Conservative friendly ridings and regions. In many cases he was outright hostile to Liberal and NDP premiers and left-leaning mayors, which is just ridiculous.

I don't think he was the devil, like many do, but he needed to go.

Edit: For example here's what Ottawa's mayor, the most dependent on Federal co-operation, had to say today:

"It was a struggle and a challenge to deal with [the Conservatives] on the most basic of basic files and I'm looking forward to a much more co-operative approach with the new government," Watson said.

"At the end of the day they came to the table but they were always the last to the table," he said, adding that while he has a good rapport with Pierre Poilievre — the only Conservative candidate to win in Ottawa's eight ridings last night — he had a more strained relationship with John Baird, who resigned his seat before the election.

"At the end of the day they did come through on [the Ottawa River Action Plan], they did come through on LRT, but as I said it was always a struggle and I think there's going to be a much more positive relationship that we will have with all three orders of government. We won't always get along, but ... there are some really great new MPs to deal with and I look forward to working with them."

He was also a former provincial Liberal. Harper and Baird especially were just outright spiteful towards him.

Some have called Harper the last remnant of George W Bush and the Neo-Cons in North America

This is utter nonsense.

This pretty much nails it.

Harper was worse than Bush Jr. imo, if the barriers placed by Chretien and Martin weren't put into place, Harper would have done far more damage. Like for starters he wanted to repeal same sex marriage, which can't be done. Also Harper has resorted to dog whistle racism and fascism, not just targeting Muslims, but with his hateful C-24 law (which is going to get repealed and throw out to the trash when Justin and the LPC come in), he basically turned a huge chunk of Canadians into second class citizens, regardless of their background or if they were even born in Canada.

Canada isn't known for this kind of fear mongering, so people didn't pay attention to Harper, but his tenure was basically the lost decade for Canada.

Fuck, I mean Dubbya wasn't even like that to Muslims, but the Saudis were his masters, so eh.

Harper was a dumb ass for using Pauline Marois' loser strategy of identity politics and wedge issues.

Both Marois and Harper are losers today

Had fun in the live election thread last night. I may be leaving Canada but this is the first time I've been proud of Canadians in a long time.

It's cheesy as fuck, and probably a bit naive, but I'm proud of my country again, and I didn't know how much I missed that under Harper.

Experts don't really share your thoughts on Chretien, Trudeau, not even Harper...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_rankings_of_Canadian_prime_ministers

Not gonna happen with Corbyn as Labour chief.

Those are MacLean's rankings, so obviously biased to Liberals.

We will have to wait and see how good time will be to Harper. As for most leaders, there is good (yes, there is), bad and ugly. It's foolish to argue otherwise.

Wait. So they are the 'experts'. Except when they say something about Harper?

Let's put it this way, they put Kim ahead of Jean. That ALONE debunks anything of value from that list.

If you look through the bills Chretien was behind that alone is enough to warrant a higher standing on the list.

I agree with you mostly. I wouldn't say I "hate" politics, but it's why I find it how worked up people get amusing.

A reddit thread, someone said they felt 'sick to their stomach' that they voted for liberal yesterday instead of conservative because of their hatred towards Stephen Harper. That's exactly how politics should go. You shouldn't be a deadset Liberal, Conservative, NDP, etc. supporter. The values of the parties and its leaders are going to change and you need to accommodate that and vote for the party/leader that best suits your views.

If Trudeau does a poor job and the new conservative leader is running a good platform then I'd have no qualms voting for them.

nerd on gaming forum is upset that the new PM attends a nerdy event to have fun.

gotta love gaf sometimes.

It's this messed up thing where people think old men who aren't going to live that long will actually enact reforms that matter to us.

I like the young blood in power. And the "he's just not ready" rhetoric wasn't enough to get enough people to vote for that. Let's get someone young and passionate going for a bit.

Different people. I vote every election but people get too apathetic to vote sometimes. People are less likely to change their party (which is messed up... vote for who is best this election) instead they just don't vote.

justin-trudeau-jarry-metro-selfie.jpg

New PM Justin went into a subway station this morning to shake hands and take selfies.

#manofthepeople
lmao, that's the Metro Jarry in Montreal. His office is on the other side of the street from that metro. Man, can't believe he's a prime minister.

Wow, we just hired this guy to look over our country..

Well, he hasn't started work yet, and he is taking some selfies with his supporters.

The fact that him interacting with the people who VOTED FOR HIM is a problem for you people is sad.

"Oh no our new PM has charisma! He actually wants to be seen with Canadian people! HOW CAN HE RUN CANADA?!?"

He seems OK.

That video from LWT of his falling down the stairs parlor trick (also known as purposefully throwing yourself down a flight of stairs) does give me pause, however.
