Halo 5 Multiplayer Coverage! (no campaign spoilers)

Did you play the beta? Most people found those changes to be just fine.

Yeah. I thought it was awful then, and I think it's awful now. I'm not here to be "that guy" and I know there's no point in trying to be a voice of (imo) reason when the hype train is going 600mph. So don't mind me, I'm just sitting back wondering how this is where we ended up.

Yup, biggest problem with them

Sucks Frankie would never comment on design inspirations, but would respond to a troll comment.

I was kinda thinking that too. The maps all look great, but there does seem to be a big chunk of sleek, plain human maps. Hopefully DLC brings a bunch of variety.

Lockout was an amazing map (I know some hate it) with a beautiful aesthetic - a snowy night. It brought soul to the map.

That's why I've always thought that having pro gamers being studio staff is bad influence for design sometimes.

I prefer technology interlaced with nature. Examples being:

- Beaver Creek
- Lockout
- Blood Gultch

Alien maps are cool too.

Things of that sort. Don't mind a military base here and there, but these arena maps are just all metallic squares.

Was this designed by pro gamers or something?

Yeah, campaign will be great, but the map design is a snore-fest. One thing I loved about Bungie is that they didn't care about pro gaming and just designed cool maps. Here it seems like everything was designed to be fair and balanced. Meaning boring with no interesting art assets.

Agreed. the lack of competitive terrain maps is disappointing. Even Regret got its color washed out.

I don't think pros have anything to do with art direction, aside from obvious stuff like sun glare or team colors. Just think the designers focused too much on "arena maps". And pro players love playing their 2 base, 2 tower maps.

Genuinely curious, are there any outdoor vibrant maps like Valhalla/Blood gulch in Arena that you've seen so far?

I know there is one in Warzone.. I'm wondering if the design ethos has been: Arena = simplistic, sleek, no clutter, small. Warzone = Big, colourful, vehicles vehicles vehicles.

Yes, unfortunately.

I don't think art design/direction has anything to do with the pro gamers lol

My understanding is the "pro staff" on payroll is for the HCS stuff and testing purposes.

I would assume the maps are just related to the campaign in some aspect and that's why they are more industrial.

See if Stinkles says anything....

Nope they all pretty much have the same aesthetic and design ethos in Arena. Warzone looks more varied

Anyone streaming Warzone? All I see is people playing arena

Matchmaking is really slow because there aren't a whole lot of people who have the game so Warzone games are very hard to start if at all. At least that's what streamers have been saying.

Yes, color is one thing that's completely missing! It's the one thing that Destiny and COD maps get very well.

I didn't mean to say that they actually designed the maps, but their influence was to make maps where there are 2 towers and 2 bases. Very boring, bluntly put.

I'm not sure why this would have to be true. I would not consider these two things mutually exclusive.

Neither do I, but they took it literally in this case.

I should have elucidated and stated that the pros had an influence on the design aspects. Like I said earlier, I really liked that Bungie made their games without caring what MLG thought.

Valid complaints about the art direction. The two warzone maps we've seen do a much better job in this regard I think

Hopefully the BTB stuff do too.. I love the arena stuff but sometimes I just want to drive around in a warthog and murder dudes.

There's no Valhalla/Blood Gulch in the package that we know of. Might ship with BTB but who knows.

I am not a super fan of Warzone, but I hope BTB has more interesting maps for sure. I've always associated Halo maps with natural vistas.

Bungie did that so well.

All they had to do was bring in the aesthetic's of the warzone maps on at least 2 of the Arena maps. I don't understand why they chose so many samey looking maps.

I'm guessing because it's tough to bring a big open outdoorsy space into a small arena map aesthetically.

Can you think of a small tightly designed arena map that had that outdoorsy feel? A few of the maps in H2A fit this bill.

They need walls and borders to close the player in and keep the action flowing and that's difficult to do

They already did it with Regret though. And it's not like maps in prior games like Highground were really so large that they wouldn't work in Halo 5, especially with the new movement mechanics.

Beaver Creek and Lockout were good maps for competitive play.

If they can't give me nature, at least provide more color.

Beaver Creek, Lockout, Warlock, Sanctuary and even maps like Ivory Tower had better aesthetics then any of these maps. They had a unique look to them, these have the same look.

Because it's not fair if Blue team spawns with a waterfall and Red team gets a sunset!

Yup, and that's the issue.

Come on MS/343, you had to know you weren't letting enough people in to test Warzone. People on Twitch clamoring to see it and you don't have enough people allowed in the game to even start a match.

I was being facetious, but 343 pros probably thought was a real problem lol.

Warzone till December.

Lot of running and hiding on these maps.

I think BTB should be fun for that classic Halo feel. Want love the new Halo so badly, but these Arena maps are quite off-putting.

I have a feeling we wont see BTB till next year.

Well yeah haha I'm pretty sure that came into play though. They need to find a way to change the aesthetics and keep it even. I mean Plaza and Empire have the same background of the city.

You're going to be pleasantly surprised then..

It doesn't change anything if one team has a sunset and the other a waterfall. It's all aesthetic. Pro teams need to stop being babies about everything.

It's funny that the best competitive Halo matches took place when Bungie didn't care about making the game pro compatible.

I can't respond to every post or question brah.

Yeah, but it's just a shame to see you responding to trolls that don't even care about Halo. I have every single Halo game ever released and want to see this franchise grow. Would be curious to hear why all of the arena maps are so sterile.

but you have so many fingers it should come easy

The entire UNSC aesthetic is just not doing it for me at all. Whatever happened the to the variety of looks and styles across maps? In this it's basically just different layouts and skyboxes, but made from the same materials.

Looks like a lot of fun but every other map looks like a midship remake?

Going to be picking up a XB1 for this soon hopefully.
