Microsoft FY16 Q1: Xbox HW rev down 17%, live rev up 17%, XBL MAU users up 28% to 39M

The fact the stock is up 7% shows how little shareholders give a shit about the Xbox division

Or they realize Xbox Live is where the growth is. Hardware is a one time sale, but xbox live revenue from game and subscriptions is a on going revenue stream from the one time sell of hardware to that consumer.

Xbox has no legs to keep up in 2016. No way it can compete with the best lineup in Sony history and a new consoleportable hibrid from Nintendo, VR and Steam Machines. RIP XONE, time to guess how MS is going to name the next console, my bet is Xbox One Zero.

If they got the point they aren't confortable sharing shipment numbers its dead.

Yep, no more numbers, from MS own mouth. Live is the new matric!

So are they saying console sales will be shared when they are a driver of revenue and operating income? Cause that quote makes it sound like "We will share console numbers when consoles make us more money"

Our I am compcomprehending that completely wrong..

Good story but they have never cared for the Xbox division and never will.

I know is OT, but since i can't resist xD i predict 1.25 million shipped+digital for Mario Maker ( the game sold 1 million retail+digital as well by 30 September 2015), and you can see here my Splatoon prediction ( all quarter since 31 December 2017 )

But, i most likely underestimated this quarter... i predict 700k, but since it sold retail+digital over 500k only in Japan and US, i believe the total shipments will be bigger than my 2.32m prediction.

31 Dec 2013: 7.4 million (3.9m XB1 / 3.5m 360)
31 Mar 2014: 2 million (1.2m XB1 / 800k 360)
30 Jun 2014: 1.1 million
30 Sep 2014: 2.4 million
31 Dec 2014: 6.6 million
31 Mar 2015: 1.6 million
30 Jun 2015: 1.4 million
Huh

You do realise in a lot of instances stock goes up on bad news/results and sometimes down on good news?

Xbox doesn't affect stock either way, stop talking out of your arse.

Investors do care about Xbox but for different reasons, they see the bigger picture and how it benefits (or not) Microsoft.

In layman terms, think you are spot on.

Wow, so no more Xbox shipment datas? :O
I guess it's a combination of two factors:

1)Sales are poor, they have nothing positive to gain in disclosing those datas
2)Xbox as a home console is less and less important in their gaming vision which is shifting to something more global including PCs and mobile plaftorms, so Xbox is not at the core.

Number 1 is definetly not good, number two it depends if you like that new vision or not.

Read Tfaults post here, Microsoft said when they will share console numbers again..

I literally took it the same way. They won't share unless the numbers are very positive. But since this is the norm now for them I wonder if Sony will follow suit and not give out PS numbers even if they are favorable.

Then why isn't their indicator Xbox Live revenue?

Serious question, is there a benefit to being in the Xbox Live ecosystem on PC only? Do people pay for it that don't own an Xbox?

Cause if 360 sales are down, and Xbox One sales aren't lighting the works on fire, how are they going to grow Live subscriptions in the future? PC integration??

People wont pay for live on PC as long as Steam is free..doubt it.

With all those bundles they are shipping, they should hit at least 20 million by the end of the year.

Gonna agree with this. And i think they will ship 20 million even just because they wanna break those numbers, even if this mean overship the stock.

I would go with number 1 If sales were good I think they'd disclose them.

As subscription is continously, it's pretty easy to grow.
Keep the audience you have and you already cannot decline.
Each new subscription you get is the growth.
So, even when you are only selling very few new consoles - your Live subscriptions grow.

There's zero reasons for Sony to stop giving numbers.

What about best lineup in Xbox console history this year and next year? Halo never been this hype, and we have Gears never been this hype next year!
Surely they can compete with that.

They've been doing pretty well in the US. This must mean they are selling like shit everywhere else then?

They seem to be doing well in central/south America. And of course, there's always New Zealand.

Going away from units to live revenue makes sense though. They're starting a long transition to Xbox as a service rather than a hardware platform. They'd be doing this change in reporting sometime anyway, and hiding hardware numbers now is a plus.

Numbers might be on a decline but wow at the people who think Xbox is going to die.

I see lots of people disappointed in the lack of shipped numbers, but I don't see anyone outright predicting the demise of Xbox.

Xbox will live on for a long time, even if Microsoft ends up selling it to someone else a decade or so down the line.

It's from Chris Suh - Microsoft investor relations, so not PR.

The problem is not the source, it's the fact that sentence means nothing.
They're saying that they reserve the right to disclose datas WHEN they see fit.
And so? It means nothing to me...

Yeah looks like this is going to be the standard now which is a huge bummer because we are not gonna have much clue what it sells in the non tracked markets. Only way we know now is if investors demand it which isnt likely or MS themselves at a separate time announce ship number milestones

Well that's rather minimal problem in case of xbox one.

If that's why they are doing it, transitioning, it seems early to do it before your 3rd holiday...

I think that sentence actually says A LOT, it basically tells you everything if you read between the lines a bit

Correct. Live is the new driver.

Sorry, probably this would help explain why

The addition of Xbox Live active users demonstrates the opportunity that we see to extend our gaming assets beyond the living room to PCs, tablets, phones and other form factors with Windows 10 and is more aligned to our long-term opportunity.
