I still remember when people moaned about this a decade ago:

latest

Suddenly it doesn't seem that bad...

I don't think that is the problem. I think it's the insistency of repeating it is what it is - since the design choice has been settled, the movie finished, the first pic of the design revealed several months ago, the lack of people "moving on" or getting used to it is kinda grating.

Eh, I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me, I'll still see the film, I'm still excited for Leto's performance, I just don't like the look is all.

People are going to discuss a new picture

I can't believe people are saying try hard lol it's a different look. TDK Joker looked try-hard too in the first promo cover. I never liked Heath's Joker till the trailer:

...now with a get up like that its kinda hard to be surprised that this guys psychosis goes far beyond the normal levels of crazy making him the most dangerous person in Gotham. You'd just kinda expect that from someone who is barefoot with a purple 3/4 length coat and blue sweatpants..., come on now, maybe he will dress up at the end of the film...take a turn for the worse.

Yah. Maybe. Hopefully he'll cover up his body, wear some pants, put on gloves and mask his entire head too.

Wow does that costume...desig-it just looks really bad. It's like some horrible cosplay of the Joker, not the design for the upcoming DCCU.

Also No smile. At least Ledger's Joker had images prior to release that showed him with a smile or one that was painted onto him. With the exception of one scene in the Suicide Squad trailer, have we seen any images or footage of the Joker smiling? Maybe it's just me, but it's bothersome to see that.

It's really difficult to correctly judge an image of a character without the context of the movie. Ledger's Joker is a great of example but I think the best evidence for this is Quicksilver from DoFP. Everyone was trashing it from the time those Empire pictures of him came out and now he's considered by most to be the superior Quicksilver, compared to AoU. But again, the internet is going to do what the internet is going to do.

Why is he ripped? Since when does the joker give a shit about working out?
I can totally see him down at the local planet fitness doing sit ups and looking in the mirror after every set.

That on the other hand is not problem. The Joker is by no means on Bane level, but he is actually fairly good at brawling usually. He does hold himself very well against Batman, physically. He looks thin, but he has strength. So a ripped Joker isn't that weird.

It's not unheard of in the comics.

Fair enough, I don't read comics.

That's ripped? Have you ever been to a gym?

He's got a 6 pack, what more do you want?

There's a difference between Bane - that's not how I'd use "ripped" he's just fucking huge. Jacked and tan to use the technical terminology.

I'm not expert on Batman lore, my read of the Joker has always just been a fucking crazy guy who wouldn't give a shit about aesthetics, but what do I know?

He's fit and skinny. Lots of fit and skinny people have six packs. Lil Wayne has a six pack and all he does is skateboard and get high all day.

And if you want to suspend that sort of disbelief you can apply it to all sorts of fantasy movies. Why does Hugh Jackman Wolverine look like he crossfits for 4 hours a day? Why is Superman ripped to shit? Comic book characters in general have always had nonsensical body types when you really think about it.

Bane is strong, big and muscular even without Venom.

And Batman lore is a bit difficult thanks to all the writers, so it's difficult to speak in absolutes, however the Joker looks more often proper or half proper. There is no rule for that on Joker though and this Joker may very well like to be tardy. We don't know yet.

Splitting hairs on slang.

I don't tend to watch many comic book movies to be honest. The only ones I've ever watched at the Batman movies. It was just something that popped out to me, clearly it's not important or a bad part of the design for those in the know. I just liked the paunchy joker.

Often in comics he will care very much about his appearance and image. Even in other media like cartoons or movies where he has an obvious style to his crimes. Just depends on who does the writing that day. But, more often than not his image is a big component of The Joker whether it's to terrify or to satisfy himself.

Looks fine to me. The Joker usually looks dumb in live action stills. He's a guy with clown make-up, green hair, and a goofy smile who wears something outlandish. Did you expect a suave sociopath who kept up with fashion?
