Can't believe the current state of the GOP. Rubio and Bush both made excuses saying "it's October." How does that excuse the candidates that the GOP voters want?
Well they can't dismiss their voter base.

Also they're right; it's October/November of 2015. They have a lot of time. Especially Marco Rubio.

So now we may be even more fucked than before, great.
Unless she goes to jail, Hillary will beat either Carson or Trump in the general election. It's Rubio you need to worry about.

I know he was polling high in Iowa (because lol Iowa), but polling at the front nationally is surprising. I wonder if Trump still has his lead in SC and NH. Either way I think Carson is the flavor of the month, he's going to melt as the frontrunner...but I said the same thing about Trump so who knows.

Because in the early polling the outsider candidates are still fresh and exciting, when it gets closer to the actual primaries people start settling down and realizing "oh shit, this person has no idea what they're talking about and would be a terrible president."

I'm still baffled as to why Carson is doing better now because it's immediately apparent that he doesn't belong in the race, but I have faith most republican voters will realize this in time.

Heh. Enjoy it while you can.

Once the other white candidates start dropping, you think republicans as a whole are going to support a black candidate?

Yeah, I get the idea that it's early and they still have a chance. It just must be worrying to the GOP that these are the types of candidates that people are flocking to. It's completely different than the flavor of the month candidates in 2012. It was easy to write it off then but it's a lot harder now that these types of candidates are staying in the front much longer.

We elected George W. Bush twice. Is it really impossible for Carson to win?

Demographics are different today than they were in 2000 and 2004. He wouldn't have a chance.

I don't get it, America doesn't like Obama because he's black so therefore he's the harbinger of doom and the end of times.

So now they're leaning towards another Black candidate?

You guys are crazy.

None of this will matter two weeks from now and Trump will be back on top. We have another debate tomorrow night, Trump on SNL the Saturday after next, and two weeks of Trump able to go to town on Carson with plenty of appearances.

Who is this "America" you speak of? Wasnt aware an entire country could be paired down to a single entity.

Man the republican base is insane... and clearly desperate.
They know the establishment politicians are fucking with them, but then they turn to Carson.

He is even more dangerous than Trump. And he is probably even less serious about running. Trump is an egotistical idiot, but Carson is a lunatic religious fundamentalist with the veneer of a neurosurgeon.

Carson and Cruz are the most dangerous candidates because they are crazy. Jeb and Rubio are corrupt. Trump is a wildcare with a few good things and some terrible things.

The repubican establishment is such a mess. Over 50% of the voters choosing carson, trump, and fiorina. Even if they all eventually drop out, neither Jeb nor Rubio is an exciting candidate for their base.

Serious question, because I don't want to assume things.

Are you saying Trump is a less damaging choice than Carson?

Trump is DEFINITELY less damaging than Carson.
Tell me one issue in which Carson is better than Trump?

Carson is such an enigma. He gives the appearance of being this super low-key and thoughtful individual. Just seems like such a nice guy

Then you actually listen to the things that he has to say, and its terrifying to think of him as the leader of the free world. He has said some of the most bizarre, out-of-touch quotes that I've ever heard out of a politician.

Is Trump gonna double down on implying this guy has low testosterone? I love it when he says shit like that.
Man, I'd love that. Suggest that he has low testosterone, that Carson is low-energy everywhere, and that he has no sex drive. And then brag about having the classiest sex drive ever.

Then, Trump could pledge that, if elected, he and his squad of Trumpettes will have a yearly Benny Hill re-enactment on the South Lawn in honor of the British on Independence Day..

If I'm not mistaken, Trump's numbers tend to go down after each debate. Where Carson, for whatever reason sees a rise. Although Trump gets a boost from being in the media, so I bet the SNL performance helps a wee bit. Just from everyone talking about it before and after.

Honestly, I wonder what impact this debate will have. Trump and Carson neutered the format because they're not strong policy debaters, so the majority of it will be candidate openings, smidge of questions, then candidate closings. I bet we see more canned stuff than "debate"

I think they can gather that they'll have a much better chance in a few months when the primaries roll around, but what's going to be difficult is convincing the donor base that they're the candidate the establishment is going to coalesce behind. There's no Romney this time around who can pretty easily state that he's going to be the guy at the end of the road, so the donors are probably split and uneasy.

Anybody donating to Carson, though, is just lighting their money on fire.

As bad as trump is at least he recognizes where there are problems and gets people talking about them. I can't think of a single thing that Carson gets people passionate about. It's absolutely baffling to me that this guy with the common sense and personality of a damn washcloth has any supporters at all. He is pretty much on the same level of any of Trump's negative positions, with added levels of buffoonery.

Why can you understand Trump's support and not Carson? They're both insane.

Trump is entertaining and charismatic, and whilst I find his wall idea repulsive its a rallying cry to some people
Carson on the other hand is dull and slow and I don't know what signature policy he is pushing that is attracting people to him

Come on Carson... you can do it; you're not as bad as Trump in my book.

Carson is worse. Trump at least speaks out against corruption and is not a religious zealot.
Trump also wants to be 'right' and lead and get results.

Carson would just light the world on fire during a sigh.

Yeah I mean they're both awful. But I haven't seen a single thing from Carson that indicates he wants to change the status quo for his party. At least we have trump railing against the establishment. Carson will just continue pushing the anti-middle class and racist positions of the far right conservatives and evangelicals. Absolutely nothing would change with this guy, except things would continue getting worse in the big picture.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
Carson is actually worse than Trump in the end... because in the end Trump is just going to do what his advisers tell him.. but not Carson.. he's legit crazy.

Pretty much. I think the answer that Fiorina, Carson, and Trump have given is " I'll hire good people..."

They have a pretty poor understanding of domestic and foreign policy, especially the latter. They'll embarrass themselves in the GOP primary if they get locked into giving substantive answer. Rubio and Jeb need to step their game up and stop letting them dodge. But the GOP climate right now is wary of "Gotcha" questions, so it never comes up.

Carson scares me more than trump. What do people see in him? The man looks like he's having a stroke every time he's interviewed.

Too many people on stage still to get to substantive questions and answers. Also doesn't help that CNN likes to ask questions like "So and so says you're a doodie-head, what would you like to say to him?"

To Republicans, Carson is one of the "good ones". I.E. He's not a Democrat.

Either way, it doesn't matter, because it's going to come down to Rubio and Bush in a few months.

My cousin was married two weekends ago and the officiant was a cousin of the bride. He seemed like an OK guy, but he was at the camping weekend we had for the bachelor party. Dude was intense, with an edge of craziness. He had a Ben Carson sticker in the window of his pickup truck.

Early primary voters be scary, yo.

The democratic debate was so substantive. I don't think any of the GOPers really has a chance if general debates are like that.

True, I guess they're just thinking of the immediate future and not looking ahead to 2020. This predicament is probably why we still have so many establishment candidates even though they're polling at like 1-3%. They see that big slice of crazy pie and think it's theirs.

That describes Trump pretty well too. I still don't know what any of his policies actually are beyond "we're gonna do it!" Like, saying "we're gonna balance the budget" is not a policy. Coming up with three completely different childishly simplistic approaches to Syria in three different interviews is not a policy.

So far the front runners are defined by an utter lack of direction. Beyond being vaguely racist and xenophobic, and claiming they're gonna save the country from spending, they have literally nothing. They just yell and sigh through debates and interviews.
That's all it takes to rally up the base these days. Just spread some fear and hatred then the poll numbers go through the roof.

That's true. With so many people still in the race, you can only get so deep. The Dem debate was refreshing since it was mainly just Sanders and Clinton with sprinkles of O'Malley.

I never skipd debates, but I don't even know if I'll bother with tomorrow. So many people still there and such a large amount of the time devoted to canned stuff. Meh.

One of the good ones.

I know an old black guy that abused the hell out of this and I kind of love him for it. He grew up in the south and when beginning his professional career started backing republicans and building connections with local republican officials who loooooved to have him around. Paid off big with networking and contracts when he started his own firm.

He and his wife voted for Obama, though, while telling everyone he voted for Romney. Genius of the highest (and simultaneously lowest) order.

I have to wonder how everyday Republicans feel about this fact. I'm not even sure there is Democrat equivalent I could use to attempt to understand how it'd feel. It must feel like being in some sort of Twilight Zone except you have to pretend everything is A-okay.

it would be like the food babe polling higher than hillary

Rubio and Bush paying the price for all of the anti-government rhetoric from the Republican Party for the last 30 years. Guess what, idiots, you are Government and you turned your base against you. Good job.

He feels legitimately like one of the dumbest presidential candidates I've ever had the misfortune of listening to. He's well past onion parody levels of dumb.

Don't get confused. Right-wingers love any black person who talks about how African Americans are responsible for all their problems, are to blame for being shot by police and if they just didn't listen to as much rap and act like "thugs" they'd all be successful.

And it allows them to talk about how not-racist they are.

Also, Carson is a neurosurgeon, but otherwise completely fucking stupid, which is a big plus in their book because it allows them to appeal to how much of an intellectual he is while remaining comfortable that he's not too smart, as they share a lot of his absolutely idiotic and demonstrably false ideas about the world. That way they can feel like they're on his level and he's not above them (superior intellect as a whole is taken as a personal insult by conservatives and is associated with the "elitist left.")

I still think that someone like Rubio ends up with the nomination, and this process will continue to happen every election cycle, getting progressively worse and more surreal, until someone truly vile actually gets the call. That will be the GOP's rock bottom. 2024 maybe?

Well they can't dismiss their voter base.

Also they're right; it's October/November of 2015. They have a lot of time. Especially Marco Rubio.
Lot of time for general election? Sure. But lot of time for the republican primaries? Nope. Iowa caucuses start in 2 months. How do you see Jeb/Marco turning the ship around in 2 months?
