Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

Pretty amazing post over at Reddit about Halo 5.

Recommend everyone reads and takes a step back from launch-week hype. I love the base gameplay, but I agree with everything he said. In addition, without forge, custom games are pretty much dead in the water until December. Doubt it'll bring back too many users if H5's population starts falling off.

edit: Top of the page, please read! I really am hoping/want better post-launch support than the past few 343 games.

Why? If you're enjoying the game, why does any of this matter?

some assassination animations can not be used close to walls for example. in that case the game uses another one

Ah, ok. I think it's the one that launches a guy into the air, guess the ceilings were too low.

I know they're a waste of time, but I love the look of them, lol.

So what's the closest Warzone game you guys have had? I just finished up a 1000-984 that was pretty much within 1 hundred points the entire time. Ending was intense with each side popping scorpions/mantis/banshees and shit.

I need that helmet as part of the REQ packs...

also, was someone able to get his pre-order stuff by now? (talking about digital pre-orders)

Anyway apart from that, my main problem is the game doesn't seem to let me change the difficulty level mid campaign. I'm up to mission 5 and it turns out I'm stuck on heroic when I wanted it on normal. Each time I leave the game, change the difficulty setting then try to resume when I press pause it still says it's on heroic. As much as I've been impressed with elements so far if I have to replay from the start I'm probably done.

Any ideas on how to change it?

Go to New Game set up, select the mission and difficulty.

HBO doesn't have many people who play multiplayer anymore. Those who used to have largely switched to Destiny. HBO is almost exclusively a campaign / lore / expanded universe affair now.

Makes sense. I never was much of an MP guy myself, one of the reasons I always felt so at home there. You can add me if you ever want to play Warzone, though!

I do not think we need Theater—we have Upload Studio; Theater is a difficult thing to implement—but it is surprising for a game that is so focused on being an MLG-relevant title to not even have a Spectator Mode. Wasn't that in the works, or in the Beta? Maybe I'm misremembering, or got my wires crossed with Hearthstone.

As for File Share, that's a Forge-adjacent feature, so we can hold off on our concern there. Game clips and screenshots are all on the OS-level now, so there's no need to spend development time on a file share only for those features.

Social playlists, I'm not so sure about.

You want players to be matched based on skill to get the best experience. A social playlists would essentially be a mode that doesn't affect rank but quietly uses it to determine players... that's a playlist ripe for abuse (place at a low level on purpose, play social to always destroy kids). Or it doesn't use rank at all, and four friends on a Fireteam can largely plow through the randomness of the social void.

I don't know when I'd select a social playlist, or why it'd be worth it to have them at the cost of diluting the playlist pool. And if your friends want to play, have a backup "guest" gamertag for them.

Starting to get the hang of Warzone, just finished the match with ~40sec remaining.

Rushed in with my Elite Ghost and took the remaining 30% core HP before i got blown up during the Victory Screen.

Worth it.

God I love this mode.

The only options are the past or what they tell us. I'd love for H5 to get better handled and I'm sure it would, but going off the past we have...

-Halo 3 Update
-Reach Update
-4 Updates
-MCC Patches
-MCC Breakdown

All of which either didn't happen, took ages, or effectively did nothing because the game was dead at that point. 343 gave us some seriously great custom options (in terms of gravity, weapon damage, etc) but at this point I dunno if it has staying power. Not to mention their communication for MCC patches has been abysmal recently. "The patch is in the works still.."

As I said before, the gameplay is great. Seriously, I love it. But the playlists can basically be summed up as: 50 Shades of Slayer with that 1 flag mode. In addition, console games don't really grow in population unless they're offered for free as in GWG or through a sale. But being realistic the playlists are limited, Warzone feels like a boring BTB, and while I love some maps, the variety seems pretty limited.

edit: I'd say the situations are completely comparable except maybe MCC, and for that they haven't followed through at all. I still have crashes at least 2-3 times a play session, followed by text displaying as code, menu freezes, etc. Still no breakdown.

His arguments are definitely valid when looking at H4. They almost killed the franchise twice over with H4 and MCC.

I really like H5 from a gameplay/mechanics point of view, but I'm going to just believe everything 343i says.

I understand that the game is currently lacking in modes and features, but I found the reddit post overly cynical, considering we know 343 plans on releasing BTB and Forge before the year ends, and it's not like they're bogged down by doing much else

Right .Gripe moment number two. As someone new to the series I have to say that warthog control is a bit of a joke. There is no logic at all to the way these things are supposed to be moved. Strange.

Also, it feels strange trying to move the spartan after basically learning FPS movement via Titanfall. I keep trying to do double jumps and headbutting the wall! It's so slow too. I think I must be being put off by the lack of screen tearing.

It requires a restart of the mission, not the whole campaign.

.

well halo 5 has an achievement for spectating
Benchwarmer: Spectate a game.

but the spectate mode is well hidden-> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5rkgMDHpwY

and we have a MP theater

Well the pit, to be precise.

By the way, I didn't say it's clusterfucky nature was a bad thing. Fighting over the pit is great. Doesn't the over shield spawn in it as well? Hahaha :)

Eeeeyup :)

People keep crouching in the corner trying to hide. It's ground pound town!

EDIT: And we do have Theater for Multi. I'm pretty sure Spectator mode is filed under that.

There's not been talk of a file share right? I really hope it or the 2015 equivalent is in the forge update, all that stuff needs to be as easy as possible to share around and discover.

not worried about it bringing back players. just worried about what they add being good

That's right, I saw Ninja streaming his old matches just the other day.

I guess I misread, the complaint from the reddit post was "no recording in theater"... except we have game DVR, so it's mostly moot.

Sadly I haven't been able to do a ground pound to anyone. I can't seem to ween myself off of the recon control scheme, which makes it almost impossible to do that maneuver.

The ledge is where it's at. Pit can still be captured that way!

Has anyone else noticed that the decals/patterns on some armors are off center? Like the Athlon Iccus the cross and circle are off in the customization menu but are centered in game, weird.

Anyone want to get a Gaf warzone train going?

It would make it much more bearable than playing by yourself lol

With all the people on here (myself included) looking for people to party up with, Spartan company integration in-game for easy party-making would have been phenomenal.

You can't change a mission's difficulty mid-mission. You have to restart it.

Going to add you, lets get this Warzone train a going! Am in UK but should be okay for Warzone methinks.

I'm really thinking of trading this in and picking it up again after Xmas. CoD is out next week so I won't be playing it after that and then FO4 soon after. Just not enjoying playing solo at all and randoms online have no braincells or thumbs. Forge will be out by then so thats a plus.
