Couple of initial impressions from Halo 5 MP:
- Weapon balance is on point and they've made every weapon I've handled feel like it has a place. Promethean weapons are no longer throwaway and mid-range combat has an actual place with varied weapon sets and tactics. It's good to see the game isn't BRs or bust, good job on that 343. =)
- Clambering is awesome and brings an entirely new skillset to close-quarters combat. I can never imagine Halo without it again and the idea of classic map remakes makes me wonder how they would have to be reworked with this new awesome feature.
- REQ cards are fun and are something to do between games. However, I wish they would allow you to delete more than 1 card at a time. Also, I wish we could move preferred loadouts to the first page of the REQ menu. If I have the ability to spawn with a bolt pistol, I'd like to be able to select it immediately instead of scrolling through menus.
- Warzone. I don't know what to say about this one, but it hasn't won me over yet. I find the maps to be too big and the engagements to be boring over all. I feel like in theory, the design of Warzone should work. You unlock new weapons, you save your cards, and then you'll use them at the end of the game.
However, it doesn't feel like it works out that way and the flow of the game takes a hit due to the long respawn time and time it takes to return to battle. I also feel like there's too much of a stalemate at the end of Warzone, with the assaulting team (naturally) having the odds stacked against them.
A few points I would think help keep the flow going are:
- Allow me to spawn on my fireteam buddies if they're in a relatively save zone.
- Make my fireteam distinct in the world and on my map. Not being able to find my party in a game of Warzone makes it a bit pointless to be in a fireteam with them.
- Smaller maps. It feels like there's way too much walking in the game, making it feel boring.
- Bring focus to the game. I'd be interested to see a version of Warzone where a team has to bring a bomb into a base and arm it. It could create further points of interest for the game and allow surprise comebacks.
I haven't played too much SP so can't really speak to it. I did try about 15 minutes of the first level on solo and came away unimpressed. I feel like the opening cinematic was a pacing mistake, as it made Osiris team look like the galaxy's biggest group of badasses, only to find out they're the most brain dead group of soldiers you could imagine on the battlefield. Disappointed by what I saw in the AI, but hopefully my opinion will change.
