Subterfuge: A week-long real-time strategy game.

I just found out about this strategy game and since I didn't see any thread about it I decided to open one.

Subterfuge plays out in real-time over the course of a week or more. Players check in a few times each day to assess their situation, issue or modify orders, and engage their fellow players in diplomacy and subterfuge. You will need to master both strategy and diplomacy to earn your victory, so plan ahead, coordinate with others, and carefully consider the consequences of your actions!

Beat me to it. After one game of NP everyone decided it was great and never to be played again lest someone be murdered halfway through.
 
(Apparently its related to Neptune's Pride in some way I think players of that game got free entry to this or something).

I'll summarise some points I've scratched together in my mind that weren't immediately obvious:

Game is free, but to unlock serious play is $10
Non-serious play means
- can't schedule moves ahead of time
- can't play in ranked games
- can't play more than one game at a time

Players might be on Android or IOS.
The game commentary/share feature is IOS only right now.

The beginning tutorial is divided into easy medium and hard. Completing all the easy scenarios takes just 5 minutes and is really a guide to the user interface. Then you can start a public game. You can go back and complete the medium and hard scenarios for practice.

Picking a public game might show only one game available and taking players but seats fill up really quickly and then you are left in a 4 hour countdown mode where you can chat to other players and perhaps propose alliances.

At first I though - oh its in space - but of course duh its SUB terfuge so its underwater. Not that it matters as you an think of it as a space invasion game.

The world is a virtual globe expressed as a flat map so there are no map edges. Everyone is surrounded. There is fog of war.

If you plan and input your moves before the game starts, you show your intentions early and the other players can act accordingly. Once the game starts your first moves are set. All you can do is turn a losing "invasion" into a "gift". So I recommend not doing that. And not starting a game that you won't be around 4 hours later for. First moves seem fairly important, to put it mildly!

Most of the complexity/depth of the game revolves around the specialists and the promotions to specialists. The right specialist turns a losing strategy to a winning one.

The game appears to eat batteries at the moment, developer knows this and I hope it is high priority to fix because it isn't gpu or cpu intensive.

The clock idea is great. Winding back or forward time to see the results of the current state of play or look back at what happened while you were offline is super easy. The youtube commentary uses that to comment out a week long game but while playing you're always moving the time forward and back to see what is due where, when, so you can predict battles and modify strategies.
 
Glad too see I'm not the only one playing this. About to finish my first game and so far it's great. So much strategies to learn though.
 
My first game is getting near the end.
Of the 8 participants (all I think are new players) only two have given up. That's pretty good for a game that takes over 7 days to play out.

Diplomacy has been a key factor, but so far there has not been a huge amount to say. You kind of agree to be allies with one or two others, then do your thing without a lot of chit chat - just the assumption that your ally isn't going to do anything weird. I don't yet find it necessary to talk to an enemy.

One interesting dynamic is the "support" option which allows a player sufficiently far ahead of another to support the weaker one at no cost to themselves, it boosts their money and production.

It will be interesting to see if allies survive the end game: when it is clear your ally is going to win unless you betray them.
 
Utterly brilliant game. Captures diplomacy in mobile form which only adds to the accessibility of the game. A unique twist comes in the form of a clock that can be fast forwarded and reminded, allowing you to schedule moves in advance, like before you go to sleep. Really the ultimate game of strategy, each game developing differently everyone. The art work for the specialists are superb. It's so refreshing to see a mobile game that really pushes the genre and offers such a fresh take on social interaction and competition. Bravo secs, bravo.
 
In my game I am now in the unfortunate position of being in the lead. As in many competitive things, this is not ideal. I think in this game it is better to be in the top 3 with alliances somewhat preserved, and try for a rush in the home stretch.
 
It's sad that gaf is not large enough to include an active chat on this game.

Mobile games are not shit (or shallow) anymore - this game proves it.

There are 15000 people in the midst of 2200 ongoing games (each one taking over a week). I have no idea if that's a lot or a little but I could easily play this for months on end and still be fascinated.

Gaf isn't very much into slow turn based games.
 
It's slow - yes - but it isn't turn based

It's got the pinpoint timing of Starcraft
The empire building of any 4x game
the easy friend making of destiny.

And yet it's ideal for mobile: you can keep your plates spinning in a game with 10 minutes of attention in a day, or if you have an hour, spend It thinking up a complex, specialist based, tactical move with an ally.

I just got into this earlier this week. The game has been epic, with some of the most breathtaking backstabs, plotting, intrigue and more I've ever seen since my old board game days playing Diplomacy.

Only went with six players to get my feet wet ... I can't wait to try out a 10 player one.

I can't believe how much this game is being overlooked, one of the very few titles to actually take advantage of the platform.

I'm not done my first game and have already purchased the full product to support the developers. Game is fully playable for free though, purchase is not nessecary except for rankings. Future orders can still be unlocked (in 2 hour increments) in the free version by watching a 30 sec ad.

The game really messes with your head. One guy I betrayed so badly he gave me a "backstabber" and "toxic" trophy (trophies can be purchased to give another player for a buck). So he was THAT angry with me. Fast forward 30 hours and we are currently the best of friends guarding each others borders while sharing intel. I'm even funding his war effort now.

Lol crazy. The win timer ( message that says "Player will win the game in X hours") can really get enemies to put aside their differences quickly for the common good.

This is definitely the deepest strategy game I've ever played on mobile.
 
I'm about to start my first game with work friends. I'm surprised many people aren't talking about this game. I've heard great things

Should get s neogaf game going
 
My group lasted 2 full games. Feelings will get hurt. Felt fatigued after the second game but would consider doing it a third time.

Yeah, it would get tiring is you play constantly, specially if it's with the same group, but after leaving it for a while I always want to go back.
