Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

After playing this for a week, I'm growing somewhat skeptical for its longterm health - Halo fans will probably stick with it, but I'm not sure about casual fans, particularly those who play solo.

Arena is 4v4, which puts a ton of individual responsibility on players. If you're not playing with a fireteam, you're probably gonna have a bad time, and leavers absolutely ruin this mode. The limited map pool is also baffling (and ugh, Orion). Breakout in the TA playlist is a mistake.

Warzone is 12v12, which makes you a cog in a grinder that has a lot less individual responsibility. It's easy to feel like nothing you do will change the outcome of a match once you fall behind (or the other team gets entrenched/pushes as a group in assault).

There's no inbetween mode with 6s, where you can make an impact or carry some weaker players, but you're not on the spot to perform at a top level at all times.

I'm ignoring other issues with the game, bugs, gameplay, or otherwise - this is just an overall nature of the game sorta deal. In just this week I've already lost some friends who don't want to play arena (too intense for them), and they're looking forward to BO3. A few others went back to Destiny. That means my remaining group for Halo is now ~3 people, not even a full fireteam for arena if everyone is online.

Req cards and the whole req card system are also really dumb, but free maps > cruddy microtransactions, so whatever. The ultra rare one shot cards are just totally pointless, you might find one in a week of play and use it up in <5 minutes (or less if you're unlucky).

Kind of a bummer too, I really like arena, and the combat feels tight and fun, but without a full party to roll with, I can't see myself sticking with it longterm either. I'll be watching what sort of support and changes they roll out I guess. I like it enough that I'd try to drag my friends who do enjoy arena back for new maps.

i agree with most of what you said, and think the longevity of this game, which is something 343 clearly wants, depends on how fast 343 addresses issues and adds more content.

if its fast and furious, i think it sticks around. for awhile. if its MCC slow, its gonna be that same halo 4 population drop

Amazing, again disconnecting me midgame. Fuck this shit. Gameplay is awesome but there are still so many technical issues with the game that I'm annoyed to no end.

Haven't had any lag or disconnections in-game so far. A few times where we were in a lobby and it had a connection error to start the actual match, but nothing once in the match. Maybe your Internet sucks, sir.

First game of the day and someone quits before it launches, on my team of course. Time to trade this in and re buy it after Christmas when most of the problems are ironed out. Gonna smash my controller if this continues.

Lol. You're in a for a bad time if you think people will stop quitting matches by Christmas... Or ever.

I think thats the problem Halo faced itself with the rise of CoD, the population decline has more to do with CoD than what some people wants to admit, a casual fan will not enjoy having bad games over and over when you have other shooters where you can do better, and dont require you to "get good" at. Hopefully (and Im like you I really like Arena) after CoD the population stay healthy enough to keep finding quality matches, but the population reduction is inevitable, the FPS market has a lot of competition going on.

It's not just the hardcore difficulty of halo, but the progression systems of CoD that keep people going. I don't know if req system can match that (especially since it really is a microtransactions tool)

Is there really no infinite ammo setting in the gametype customization? I went through all setting twice now and didn't find it. :/

Got diamond in slayer/team arena and now when I play alone I'm getting destroyed. Back to bronze boys.

Truth. If you play with Ocho he will pull in full party lobbies of the most try-hard Halo teams ever and they will stop you 9 times out of 10 lol. ;) Any way to reset our levels?

i think it can as long as people are constantly unlocking things, and there are new things to unlock.

slot machine mentality. 'just one more spin'.

Yeah I'm worried about the impact black ops and Star Wars will have. I'm quite enjoying this halo and so I hope it will have enough people active to get decent games.

Hoping the Christmas rush brings in a fair bit of new blood

I wish there were social playlists as I do think the pressure of 'ranks' will scare people from arena which would be a shame as the 4v4 gamrplay is really good

So is the ranking system broke at the moment until a reset happens? I managed to get into Onyx but I really don't think I'm anywhere near that skill level if you compare the ranking systems to other games.

I can hold my own in the games okay but it feel like high play/Onyx is really saturated and the lower tiers less so?

I think levels are due to reset monthly! If you can't wait and really want to play that playlist then you can make a second account on your Xbox - if you have gold on one account it will let you play on a second too

Would be a shame to have to do that! Maybe playing against onyx/ diamond will be good practise? :p

As someone who dumped in loads of time into both Halo 3 and MW way back in 07, it's no surprise that MW was massively popular and made H3 feel a bit old fashioned. The game's skill ceiling was much lower and maybe empirically it was not as good, but the fast pace paired with that advancement system was like heroin shot directly into my veins. MS/Bungie/343 tried twice, with Reach's weird customization thing and 4's loadouts, to do what COD did but they didn't quite work (I really liked H4's multi FWIW).

I feel like Halo 5 really has some wonderful fast paced action. I think it nails a balance and is really satisfying. It's quintessentially Halo while doing some interesting things with modes and unlocks to expand out. But I think like the others you have to want to play a Halo game. I was maybe thinking about getting BLOPS 3 or BF but I'm bailing on that because I want to keep playing this. Obviously this is what Microsoft is hoping for.

Is there an easy way to kill knights in this game? I kee And seeing people shoot them in the head to kill them somehow.

Shoot the glowing parts on their sides. If you shoot one of those off, they'll open their faceplate and scream. If you can shoot them in the head then, they immediately die.

Shoot the weak spots on their sides. When one piece of armor breaks, they'll briefly expose their "face" (it'll turn orange) and you can shoot it. If you miss that, you'll have to strip off the other weak point, at which point you can either try for the headshot again, circle around to pour fire into their back, or pull off an assassination if you're close enough.

While quitters suck, if you have a decent enough squad it's totally possible to win 3vs4. The enemy team has less targets to kill, and you have more to kill. I think of all the games with quitters (which is like 6-7 games out of 40 games or so) I've won 4 of them. The other two were really close too.

If the other team is a party tho, you're pretty much done. If the other team is disciplined and not just running around, it's hard to come back while down a person.

well just sold my wii u today with 15 games.
no regrets zelda is coming on the new nintendo nx anyway

got myself this game and a xbox one elite bundle.+forza 6
only had to pay 50 euros on top:)

Can't wait to play halo and all the other exclusives!

#heroesneverdie

We must get better.

(or go play war zone lol)

Am i the only one sucking ass with the BR? I do what feels like 4-5 headshots and still dont kill people. Its getting really frustrating

headshots don't count until their shields are down. unfortunately they sought fit to not give a good indicator when that is (for you or opponents).

If you shoot their backplates off they have a weakspot in the back too.

One problem with the game is that it never makes it clear that you can do this. Halo has always been about emptying a lot of bullets into enemies (Other than maybe the Hunters in CE). Its never clear in 4 and 5 that theres weak spots to enemies imo.

3rd game with my Beloved Sentinel BR and Longshot AR...Killed Captain Hestro AND Warden Eternal.

Feels good

I mean, I still suck at Halo, don't get me wrong. But at least with these weapons I can suck happily...away from the enemy and trying to get assists.

Any word on BTB release? I need just one more game type to pallet cleanse between Arena(Slayer, breakout, tram arena) and Warzone. After that, I can honestly say I am not sure when I will tire of this game.

the first time you fight one in the first mission they do not shut up about how to kill it

I know it's nothing new, but it bothers me to no end that 41% of Amazon reviews are one star mainly due to the lack of split screen. You could easily do your homework on this before buying.

I think it bothers me even more because I'm pretty in love with the multiplayer (other than the lack of maps in Slayer, but I'm a broken record there).

That's not true - you are pretty much encouraged to use energy weapons and then headshot in the older halo games

Typically a plasma pistol shot followed by a headshot makes quick work of almost all the enemy's

Shoot the weak points on their shoulders. This will cause them to do a scream animation, in which you can land a headshot. If you miss that opportunity, you have to hit them in the back.

What packs did you get to get those weapons? I've been lusting after the Sentinel BR, although it seems like as the game proceeds enough other people have good weapons that you can just scrounge them up and replace your own starters.

What? It's quite obvious when the enemies shields are down. There's an obnoxious yellow light surrounding your opponents body, that seemingly explodes and dissipates when theur shield is depleted...

When your own shield is down, you see the same yellow flash on your HUD AND your screen starts flashing red AND annoying alarms start going off.

I don't think it could be any more obvious... That's why you always here people yelling "one shot", because they are informing their team that an enemy is one headshot away from death.

Don't mash the button and aim slightly higher is what I've been doing. I could 4 shot in all halos every time but this one was just odd. I found I wasn't actually aiming exactly at the head. Now I get perfect 4 shots at close range.

Yeah im aiming at the same place ive always aimed and im getting nothing. With the Promethean gun im fine, but the BR and Pistol, im shooting them 4-5 times and they never go down. Ill try to get used to going higher but my muscle memory is hard to change.

I got each one from one of the Warzone REQ Packs from the Deluxe Edition.

If it helps, the Assault Rifle with Longshot Sight and Stabilization Jets is classed as "Uncommon" and you can use at Level 3 REQs.

The Battle Rifle with Sentinel Sight and Stabilization Jets is classed as "Rare" and you can use at Level 5 REQs.

So...keep grinding out Silvers since they give Rare Cards and you have twice as many chances at getting one than with a Gold Pack!

Sentinel BR is so good ahhh

Ended that Warzone game with 1590 points. Felt good. I was spam ghosts to tell and back. :lol

Half my team struggled in knowing what the hell to do, thankfully there were like 4 of us that carried the team the rest. We couldn't hold any of the armories to save our lives. I cleared out our East armory like 6 times with my ghost, and there would be no one helping me to cap.

Uh, one of your squadmates makes it very clear they have weak points when they first show up in the campaign.

Anyone want to help guide two micless people for the Iron skull on Mission 3? or try for it anyway :P

edit: gt is on profile (BossDarkseidX) feel free to jump in.

After playing videogames for 20years it was Kind of obvious to shoot the brighter glowing parts in an enemy. Many games do this

It doesn't sound like you ever understood halo...

It's always been about removing shields, then finishing with a head shots... H4 is the only game to somewhat buck the trend because Promethean Knights were annoying to fight...

Grunts- one precision shot to the head
Jackals- one precision shot to the head,
Shielded Jackal- one shot to the hand, one to the head (or remove shield with plasma weapon)
Elite- remove overshield with plasma, one shot to the head
Hunters- shoot the bright orange spots until they die
Crawlers- one head shot
Drones- one head shot
Soldiers- shoot the glowing yellow
Promeathean Knight- Shoot the glowing yellow

Spartan- same as elites

Grenades damage is interchangeable with plasma damage, depending on the situation.

If you think Halo has always been about simply unloading a lot of bullets, you've been playing it wrong... It's about removing shields as quickly as possible, then getting the kill shot...

And Halo 5 is no less obvious about weak spots... Glowing spots are weak spots in every video game ever... The supporting characters even spell it out for you.

I mean popped, like previous Halos. there is bleed through where there didn't used to be, so now you can die in a shot even if your shields aren't down. It's not as obvious because you don't have time to react once it's down. I'll test it but I don't notice shields popping on opponents at least as obviously as previous games with the fire burst around them.

edit: you're right. It just seems like you yourself don't have the same amount of notice once popped as there really seems to be bleed through unlike Halo 3
