Pretty much. Everything they've shown so far screams Fallout, it just has more depth in the world elements and less in the dialogue/stats.

I don't know. They did show off turrets and guards at E3, so my assumption is that if you left it with no defenses then it would be destroyed/attacked.

all we know is you can build multiple ones and they will have caravans between them, you have to build water and food for your settlers, there will be special vendors and they can be attacked so you can set up automated defenses

it wouldnt shock me if they would have side quest givers in them but that is just speculation
 
So it seems FO4 is becoming more action-like? At the same time though, Bethesda did still say that they still want the combat to ultimately be an RPG. On karma specifically, I actually didn't like it in Fallout 3. That game's whole approach to morality seemed pretty black and white to me. I think the localized reputation system in New Vegas made more sense. Is that not in FO4?

The features I know about being removed aren't really deal-breakers to me anyway. What I'm most anticipating is overall how systemic FO4 ends up feeling. Will it still have a somewhat living, breathing world where NPCs act dynamically based on their own AI and daily schedule? What's the possibility-space like for what can happen in combat or how quest objectives can be resolved? Can you do things with the game's systems that Bethesda didn't fully anticipate without the entire game breaking down or blocking me?

To me, what has really set apart Bethesda's games is that they are nearly the only true immersive sims still being made, at least in the AAA space. Most of the different kinds of games that started on PC and moved to consoles during the 7th console generation ended up changing. The space of factors and systems involved in gameplay got smaller. Mechanics were simplified. The games generally became more "game-like" instead of "simulation-like." Look at System Shock vs Bioshock, or Crysis 1 vs Crysis 2. Fallout and Elder Scrolls have been the exception. Oh those franchises have definitely changed from their older versions, but I feel they've remained true to their systemic approach to gameplay. I just hope FO4 does as well. A game doesn't necessarily have to feel like an RPG to accomplish this (STALKER, Crysis again, Thief, even Phantom Pain to an extent).

The fact that you can build structures and towns seems to indicate FO4 is not only preserving this feeling, but even expanding it in some ways.
 
At the beginning of Old World Blues and still have Dead Money, Lonesome Road and other quests to play.. there's gonna be a lot of Fallout in my life
 
Wow. I would never expect to be disappointed with Fallout... and I consider myself a big fan of the series. They can't be fucking serious

You literally didn't even respond. I'll reiterate. How is it LESS hand-holding/helpful for a player to directly pick exactly what a PC is going to say? What are you even arguing then? I'm unclear on your stance.

Mine?

Fallout/2/3/NV == Dialogue choices condensed to sentences to give players and devs an equal amount of what response to expect from an NPC. Again imperfect solution as never will all the responses be avaliable.

Fallout 4 == All those previous sentences shoved into a single word or phrase. These expect the player to guess how the PC will say or do and how the NPC will respond or do. Much more risk involved in choosing an answer and making a character act completely differently.

Sure, one more mechanic to drop. Items and equipment that weigh nothing makes perfect sense in a world where people who decide to be your friend become gods.
 
Honestly i like the new power armor.
It used to always be the end goal in armor, whether you were sneaky or not.
And it would completely hide your character.

I think this'll help diversify armor styles.

From Fashion Souls to Fashion Fallout.

Yea you're right. I could see how it adds to it to the role playing. I just hope there's more to it than just building. Like there being certain related quests involving it or you witness NPCs getting married and having kids or you having to settle some dispute that leads to a cool quest. So far all I see is a town builder.

According to the leaks, you'll be informed if your settlement is under attack and you'll get the chance to defend it.

Really? I think I've seen that before every major game on GAF that gets leaked. People that want to see the game fail seize on minute details, people that want to see the game succeed try and do their own thing. The Witcher 3 had like a hundred page downgrade thread and now it's treated as one of the best looking games ever. GAF just gonna GAF.

Bethesda games have become really iconic over the years for this and the previous generation. Even in ways that I hadn't thought they would.

A little ranty, but I remember when Skyrim came out, I was in High School at the time, and it was seriously the most excited I'd been for a couple years. I had gone to get the game with my friend and my brother at midnight to get my copy. The following week, I was walking on the track talking to a couple nerdy kids in the class who I figured knew about the game (and of course, they did) and suddenly a few kids I knew from the lacrosse team started talking about it with us, and pretty soon about 30-35 random kids all walking the track were all discussing how amazing they thought the game was after starting it. "You can do anything", "I made my character do X" "Well, I did Y" one after the other after the other. Now, more hardcore gamers go "Well that's a clear sign of how casual these games are becoming. Look at that, ANYONE can play these" and then take the tinfoil hat back off and do whatever. But what I saw there was really a crazy thing: so many people I'd never expect really enjoying and caring about something I didn't even think they knew existed. Something I really cared about had value in a greater sense than just the bubble I and most people who play videogames are so VITALLY incubated in. People need to really step back and think about how little games mean to the average person, especially people around here. But seeing something like that, really put things into perspective for me.

It made me a little less cynical towards the "Casualization" of games nowadays, at least Bethesda's. The more people are playing video games, and enjoying them, the happier I am, for good and bad.
 
Losing Karma doesn't matter to me, it was a busted morality system based on solely black and white stuff. You're an evil fuck or the savior of everything. Or you're an evil fuck who gave a whole bunch of water to a homeless guy to become wasteland jesus.

Even assuming it was brought back with tweaks, having an ingame tracker of good/bad pushes you more to just be the same person in each scenario(ala ME paragon/renegade) instead of trying to react more to each scenario. I'm never really a fan of that.

Reputation was a better system for sure.

Why would anyone trust enthusiast press reviews over empirical data like gameplay videos not approved by the game's marketing department? Especially for a game like this where everything is on extreme lockdown, and considering Bethesda's reputation with official statements.
 
I'm really, really curious about how people will look back on Fallout 4. The entire conversation in the 'other' thread is reminding me a lot of Mass Effect 2 prior to it's launch. A large subset of people complaining about Bioware removing the RPG elements from ME2 that ME1 had, complaining that they were removed instead of fixed, ect.

And now in most conversations ME2 is propped up as the superior game and ME1 is shit upon.

Then don't do it. Much like everything in RPGs, it's optional. At least you're attesting that even the very best of the "tradtional" RPG have mechanics just like these and their presence doesn't make it a lesser game.

Listened to the Spotify playlist Bethesda uploaded today, and damn they nailed it again with the licensed tracks. They scored Nat King Cole's Orange Coloured Sky, which was used in the New Vegas trailer and got me insanely hyped but was never actually in the game.

I guess I'll have to wait and see how this is implemented and if it's possible to build an indestructible settlement.

Because the the thought of building a settlement only to have it destroyed doesn't sound fun.

The home base / stronghold type mods tend to be quite popular for both FO3/NV and Skyrim as well. That Bethesda is trying to implement something along those lines more thoroughly into FO4 does not surprise me at all, and I expect it to find its way into the next Elder Scrolls game in some fashion.
 
I've seen this exact cycle of opening the hategates before, when Bioshock Infinite released. It's the same story every time: Fossils from a bygone era come out of their caves to yell at clouds for a two week period then go ahead and buy the game anyway and play it in spite of themselves.

Ofcourse it makes it a lesser game. Just not enough to substantially impact the overall quality.

If buddies take enough damage (depending on the equipment you have for them) they get Fultoned out of the battlefield and your bonding with them decreases. But besides that you can tell that your buddies are in trouble and you will get all the necessary visual and audio cues. DDog will try to retreat, Quiet will change her sniping position, DHorse will try to kick enemies and flee. All this is kinda convicing that your buddy is in trouble and in pain unlike the dog in Fallout 4 who, apparently, walks through fire casually.

Its just bits and pieces that will help the player get immersed.

My bad, I misread your post. I thought you were able to quantify the benefit e.g. INT 10 would augment xp by X percent compared to INT 5. I guess we're still waiting for the number crunchers to work out the little details.

I loved everything about ME1 except maybe the inventory system, I just tolerated that. I mean, I got ME1 day 1 on 360 and proceeded to play through the entire game start to finish nine times in a row.

I've never done that with a game before, or since. I just loved everything about it. I still feel that ME1's final few hours to ending is one of the best.

I'm thinking Steam pre-load won't hit until sometime this coming weekend. Friday at the earliest or Sunday at the latest.
 
I wish you could see how many people bash the game and in the end buy it anyways. Now that would be much more fun than actually playing it.
