I mean every open world game has to pay the Open World tax somewhere
I know for Witcher 3 it got a lot of crap for its combat, animations, and some other things mentioned in here.
Cant have it all i guess?
True. But if you look at CDPr, all their games have improved in all their aspects globally. The combat and animations aren't as good as other games, but they're much improved over W2.
Same can be said for fallout 4 considering what the animation in their last games looked like. Especially past fallout games which had no mocap.True. But if you look at CDPr, all their games have improved in all their aspects globally. The combat and animations aren't as good as other games, but they're much improved over W2.
It is certainly possible to find a low quality asset in any of their best looking games. Come on now, no open world game has a lack of low quality assets, that's just not possible. :/Rockstar?
CD Projekt?
...Ubisoft even?
True. But if you look at CDPr, all their games have improved in all their aspects globally. The combat and animations aren't as good as other games, but they're much improved over W2.
So my question is now.... Is it just because Bethesda is keeping itself so conservative and not investing more money in expansion?
I thought for sure after Skyrim blew up that they would have the money to push things forward.
Sorry but... Are you serious?
Cause Fallout 4 is not a looker for sure but it's still leaps and bounds over those two, especially RDR.
Things look extremely flat. Weird. Lighting seems good tho.
Not sure if I would call it much improved, W3 always felt like W2 in an open world. Especially before they patched in an alternative movement mode into 3.
I recommend playing witcher 2 for an hour and then playing witcher 3, huge leap. Especially in responsiveness because Witcher 2's combat has an absolute fuckton of animation priority. Not sure if I would call it much improved, W3 always felt like W2 in an open world. Especially before they patched in an alternative movement mode into 3.

For AO it says "SSAO(High)", which makes me think there is a higher AO setting (HBAO+ ?)What's changed in Gamebryo whatever the version is now:

But Bethesda games still feel more alive than most open-world games. Even The Witcher 3 couldn't come close to that, everything felt pretty artificial.
Bethesda open world games absolutely nail exploration and they put a lot of time into AI routines and shit and I'm sure it's hard on the CPU.
As the poster above said, it could also be related to their aging engine.
To all the people talking about how Witcher 3 looks better than this and how revolutionary its visuals are; do any of you remember all the bitching about its graphics at launch? Remember this?

I'm actually still not that impressed with Witcher 3's visuals on PS4 even after all the patches and updates. I mean it looks pretty good, but the foliage still lacks any sort of lighting and it comes across looking very weird in spots...and a bit static. The sunlight looks fantastic though and went a long way in that game. I suppose there is more of a dramatic difference from consoles to PC in that game than there may be with F4.
I'm hoping the lighting in F4 is at least cool looking. I can overlook crappy textures to an extent if things are lit to a semi realistic degree.

Would make sense. Godrays quality and TAA makes me think that we can pretty much confirm the rumour that Fallout 4's getting Nvidia Gameworks, which would also probably mean HBAO+.
Im wondering if the game sells millions, if they even will build a new engine.Wow, what a surprise, the game looks just as bad as I've been saying it would from the start.
Unless people are actually stupid enough to confuse graphical fidelity with art style, which they probably are since they've been stupid enough to defend these gen. 5 graphics since Fallout 4s reveal.
The art style looks really nice and has a vibrant color scheme to it, but the graphical fidelity is way too small of a bump up from fallout 3, just like the resolution bump.
The increase in graphical fidelity is far too small for how they pace their projects and people lap it up because they're blind fanboys who defend every shitty decision Bethesda makes.
I hope no one ever has a problem with anything Bethesda produces because apologists will jump all over you for having a reasonable critique of the product since Bethesda can do no wrong in their eyes.
Bethesda told us the frame rate was unlocked on PC where's the vsync toggle. What's changed in Gamebryo whatever the version is now:

Isn't that GTAV running on current-gen? I think when CrichtonKicks mentioned last-gen open world game looking better than FO4 and mentioned GTAV as example he meant last-gen version of it, which doesn't look as good as FO4.
-----
Also people saying TW3 doesn't look that hot on PS4 I can understand that, but then we really shouldn't be comparing PS4 version of TW3 to these FO4's PC Ultra pics, or? If someone wants to put these FO4 PC shots next to PC version of TW3 here is few of mine;

I really don't like this narrative that "bethesda hasn't done anything to improve their engine." The thing is that they HAVE made several improvements to the engine. "Barely" is ridiculous even without knowing how the immediate specifics of how they changed underlying tech aside from the obvious huge improvement to lighting, materials and character animation, (yes, it's an improvement, play fallout 3 on 360 or even worse, on ps3). And no that doesn't make me a blind fanboy for thinking so.That's the thing.
They have enough people that buy each release that improvements are not necessary when they've made back all they've invested just in preorders before the game is out.
This is the issue with holding games above critique.
If they get a free pass, they never need to improve and they never will for fear of alienating their golden goose fan boys that line up in droves to buy their games.
Just look at how they barely improve graphics since people always apologize for them and say "Bethesda games have never had good graphics so they never need to have good graphics"
See. And I find W3 to be one of the top five best looking games ever lol, (and GOTY).Witcher 3 best looking rock textures evarrrrrr

Yen. What a babe, I tell ya.Witcher 3 best looking rock textures evarrrrrr

No. Witcher 3 is using REDengine3 which is build on top of REDengine2 [1=PC release of TW2 & 2=360 / PC Enhanced Edition].

a 290x is somewhat faster than the 970. So ultra.
Witcher 1 used Bioware's Aurora Engine actually - they started their own engine for the cancelled Witcher 1 console version.

But he talks about Witcher 2.
Wow, I don't understand why the visuals look this bad..
In review
- crossgen development timeline
- same but updated engine
- conservative development and team size
- priority put on other aspects of the game
- artistic talent of the team
Anything else to explain it?
