Bernie Sanders introduces legislation to legalize recreational marijuana

The Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act introduced Wednesday by Sanders would end the long-time federal prohibition on marijuana. This is the first Senate bill to propose legalizing recreational pot, according to marijuana advocates.

The legislation would remove the barriers for states that want to legalize recreational and medical marijuana without interference from the federal government. However, other states could still choose to prohibit pot.
The move could help Sanders further endear himself to younger voters as he seeks the Democratic presidential nomination. He became the first candidate from a major party to endorse marijuana legalization last week.

"We need major changes in our criminal justice system — including changes in drug laws,” Sanders told students at Virginia's George Mason University last week. “Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use. That’s wrong. That has got to change.”

Only if we can stop smoking long enough to get up and vote.

no need!

Good. Even when it fails, it's great to get it out into the open and for conversation, dialog, and education to follow. Just don't give up for 20+ years like with other progressive agenda. Push and push.

No chance lol

but it's fucking insane that he's pretty much the only presidential candidate that is thinking like this when it comes to legalizing.
Sadly no legitimate candidate with a chance would risk it. Because he isn't worried about having to be in the general he can say these things.

He'll be lucky if this makes it out of committee in the Senate.

Well yea. You can pretty much mark it 100 percent that it dies in committee. Still though let's say hell freezes over and it does and passes the senate. It wouldn't ever see the light of day in the house. That is 100 percent certain.

Ah, good stuff Bernie. I'm not expecting it to clear the house at all, but even still, it's bound to at least help him keep the spotlight on him for awhile longer.

It's funny, yet sad, that Bernie was doing pretty well at whittling away at Hillary's numbers...only for the republicans to do that Benghazi hearing and basically hand her the nomination, and the election in one shot.

Turtle-soup would never bring it up for a vote in the Senate either.

This isn't getting out of committee in the Senate.

I love how we had exactly the same reaction to this news :lol

I hope this pushes him over the edge in the race vs. Clinton. He really needs that minority vote and something should make people realize that he indeed is the best choice for minorities and not Clinton (God knows how many minority prisoners are stuck for MJ related 'crimes').

At the same time, though, I'm actually kinda glad that Clinton looks to be perfectly capable at handling being president. As a Bernie supporter, I was sort of meh about her before, but now I have a bit more confidence in her leadership abilities if she takes the primary.

I just hope that the increase in polling numbers that will almost certainly result from this will give other candidates an idea of how popular such a move actually is among the general populace.

So now's the time to see if Bernie is for real about his populist "educating" message he wanted to get around to doing. Marijuana legalization I think is one of the easier topics to get wide support after a continuous and comprehensive campaign for it.

Evangelicals will be against it, but we should really stop fearing their power in this country and just go at it.
