Fallout 4 is available for pre-load on Steam

Nah, I'll download it day one, last time I did pre-load it took longer than downloading it from scratch.

You and me both Indigo.

-----------------------------------------

What was the install size of Skyrim? I remember thinking it was damn small for the what I felt was a huge game.

6GB IIRC.

I've over half preloaded (will finish tomorrow). I'm just hoping the unpack doesn't take forever. I did it with Metal Gear Rising and it took so long that I didn't understand the point. I'm hoping it makes more sense with a larger game.

Took me about 30min for Black Ops 3 on a normal hard drive. Considering Fallout 3 is smaller in size it'll take less.

I got my Steam key from GreenManGaming and the game isn't showing up in my library even though the Store page says I own it. What do?

There is data on the disc but I don't know how much. And yeah, there is also a Steam key in the case.

No more than 9Gb, since that is the limit of DVD.

I don't see why Bethesda would only ship one disc. All its recent games have come in multiple discs for the physical PC version. Wolfenstein and Evil Within are each four discs with the complete 1.0 versions of the games.

Given this file size I expect the Fallout 4 physical box to contain three DVDs.

I asked in the huge Fallout thread but didn't get a response, how big are we thinking is the day one patch?

I'll be using a VPN it play it Monday morning but the limit is 500 mb, will that be enough y'all reckon?

You can close the VPN once the download has started for whatever patch there is. Or at least that's how it's worked for me in the past.

Make sure your library view at the top isn't set to "installed" or something instead of all games.

For reference, MGS5's initial download on PC was just over 20 GB. The initial Witcher 3 download for the base game from GOG is around 25 GB I believe.

answered my own question

Digitally the game will become available at 12:01am (local time) in all territories (in North America, the unlock time will be 12:01am EST)

YESSS that means monday night

Well that was kind of early. Thanks for the heads-up.

Oh, nevermind. It's not "local time" as in everywhere, it's just showing the time it unlocks for your local time. This is certainly better than 3:00 AM EST.

Oh my God. I checked the store page for the unlock time, and saw that price: $79.99 CDN.
I'm so glad GMG and them discounts exist. Paid $30 less than that after currency conversion.

Well, 5Gb is pretty small. Took me less than 30min to download full game when download speeds reached 15-16MB/s.

But there is also seam compression for pre-loads. I remember GTA5 after pre-load was 10Gb more on my SSD than when I just pre-loaded it, took like 30-40mins to decrypt and unpack.
This post makes me sad, it would take me 2 hours to download a 5gb file, that's if I have full speed!

wud game be better if tech dudes didn't compress files and put in highquality video (good, but consume lot of file size) and all languages and repeat-hashed junk data (never quite understand why some devs do this, does it prevent piracy?) in order to inflate file size to 55 gigs?

but that wuldn't make game better...

MGS4 was ~50 gigs no? but no1 ever put it as a plus when discussing merits demerits of how good it is

remember quality not quantity

It will be my first time using a VPN to play a game earlier on Steam and I am wondering what do I have to do exactly and at what time. I understand I have to connect to a New Zealand VPN in 48 hours, but do I start Steam before or after the VPN? And before the NZ release time or after?

Exit Steam
Start VPN, Use Aus VPN
Start Steam
Confirm FO4 is downloading final pieces
After FO4 finishes, You can play game, if you wish to do this without VPN on, Go into Offline Mode before Turning VPN off.

You may be successful in switching the VPN off whilst finishing the FO4 Download, but I don't remember, so if it messes up, you will have to start from step one with exiting steam.

Thanks a million times! I will definitely try it out on Monday when the game unlocks for NZ.

After the game unlocks with the vpn, do I have to keep using it or can I uninstall it and play the game normally?

You have to keep using a VPN if your playing online before the game has unlocked in your timezone. As mentioned you can get around this by having Steam run in offline mode after you unlock the game early. Then just keep Steam in offline mode until the game is actually out in your region - the VPN can be off as you play if you do this method.

Has Steam ever taken any action against people using VPNs to access games early?

If there's nothing to worry about then I'm definitely doing this.

I *think* it's only a big deal with them if you use a VPN to buy a game in a country with a lower currency value.

Edit: I've not heard of anyone getting in trouble for unlocking anyways.

So what time if I'm using a vpn will this unlock? (Cst)

Trying to decide if im so impatient that I'd go pc over xbone for a few hours. I like xbox for achievements btw

Wait how would that work? Wouldn't Steam know I'm not actually in NZ and abort it?

People have been doing this for years, Valve doesn't give a damn.

Use flyvpn and go to the Fallout 4 store page, then add the hours.
