Rise of the Tomb Raider - Review Thread

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...r-makes-case-for-tomb-raider-exclusivity-dealso no, this isn't at all the same case as sf5. if it were, a Ps4 port wouldn't be coming down the road. phil spencer paid for Ps4 users not to have this game for a year. he didn't pay to fund the game like sony's doing with sf5.

and i'm pretty sure between the two, rotr was the one that was gonna come out "no matter what". wasn't capcom in bad financial place when sony made the sf5 deal with them?
I find it hard to believe that SF5 wouldn't have happened with Sonys involvement. Despite what they say, I don't really believe them.

the facts are that capcom was in a bad financial state when sony made the deal, and sony themselves are pouring money into development. but as someone else said we really shouldn't keep talking about sf5 in this thread, might result in a lock.

I was subconsciously hoping this game was a disappointment. Why did Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Battlefront all have to live up to expectations and release within a week of one of another :(

Well......shit! :(

Here i was so happy when someone from CD said there would actually be challenging puzzles.

Seems to vary, this guy mentions the Tombs being challenging, with later Tombs being enormous. (I think Gamespot mentions this too) See below

Edit: Yep, GS mention Tombs being challeneging, IGN said they were 'hard', and that it was the highlight of the game.

As long as there are more tombs than in the first one, I'm happy. more challenging or not.

Game will be great regardless of tombs, i'm sure.

I loved TR 2013, largely because I love Uncharted. I just want more action adventure fun times. I would be pretty disappointed if they went back to being puzzle based tombs like the early games, I was not a huge fan of the original series.

That being said, a few more tombs to raid is probably good, and I'm glad the reviews seem solid so far. I'm definitely planning to pick this one up.

IGN Spain says it's the best looking Xbox One game. That includes Ryse? Doubt that. Plus that would be weird as hell, seeing how crazy good the 360 version looks as well.

I'm surprised at these scores. Does the game really get better after the first hour? I thought it would be more of the same, meh cutscenes, stupid """puzzles""".

As long as those collectibles where you have to pan and zoom around are still in, this game could be a 2/10 and I'd still be buying it next year.

The first one was at an 86 meta and this is at an 87. It seems like an evolution of the first which was very well liked by the critics so scores aren't that surprising.

Really? Because that was the exact situation with Dead Rising 3, if MS hadn't stepped in, that game likely would never have seen the light of day. Capcom isn't the company they once were financially, and Street Fighter, after a nice resurgence, has definitely been on a slide the last few years, so while it may have come eventually, I doubt it would be coming in 2016 if it wasn't for Sony playing a part.

If Ryse had a competently handled X360 port, it'd look crazy good for that gen too.

Not enough time my friend

Usually I would get both, but I like to finish a game before I get another now.

Glad to see the reviews are doing this well. Getting this and fallout tomorrow with the 2 for 1 deal. I just need to find a Christmas game to buy my mom that has co-op on Wii u. Any suggestions gaf.

Eurogamer review is pretty scathing of the plot and characterizations, not exactly unexpected. It sounds like it suffers many of the same problems of the first game, but even remotely engaging puzzles and potentially improved AI and stealth will go a long way to garnering some interest from me. Definitely going to wait on impressions, especially since I forgot to even add this to my Gamefly queue :p

Reading this review, it seems like it's pretty much exactly like the first game, with exactly the same flaws. The reviewer even explicitly says: if you enjoyed TR2013 you will enjoy this, and if you didn't, you won't change your mind.

So, I guess it figures that it'd be getting 9s everywhere else. People love their shoddily-written AAA shooters full of collectibles.

That Eurogamer review is quite sobering. Unfortunately it's also the one that feels more honest by half.

"It's an unchallenging pot-pourri of virtually every current mainstream gaming fashion, bearing the clear imprimatur of design by committee. "
Yeah, again, same as TR2013.

And there is your clickbait review. Every game gets one, who's it gonna be for Fallout 4? LOL, they give Fallout 4 a 6 as well. Fucking morons.
Morons? Have you actually read the review? It's pretty well written and justifies its score quite intelligently. Only a butthurt fanboy would have a problem with an informed and well-reasoned dissenting opinion.

My last few months of gaming have consisted almost exclusively of hopping from TR:DE to the Nathan Drake Collection, so I'm really looking forward to heading back to Rise now.

Both series do so many things so incredibly well, and it's nice to have massive budget games that are similar yet varied enough to not get stale.

Basically an embarrassment of riches here.

How is it that every AAA game gets the same scores?

They all appeal to a roughly equivalent percentage of the total market (large enough to justify the budget). Most aren't universal enough in appeal to avoid the odd 6's and 7's that keep them from a 90, but most also see enough 8's and 9's to keep them comfortably in the 80's.

I feel really bad for this game releasing among so many big hitters. The reviews are coming in better than I expected. I don't have an X1, and even if I did, Fallout 4 and Battlefront will be taking all my time for the next couple months.

The game is definitely on my "to buy" list, it is just going to have to wait.

Both. But I think I'm going to go for Tomb Raider. I'm going to wait on Fallout 4 to get a few patches under it's belt. And I'll get it for Christmas hopefully.
fallout hasn't had an iteration since like, 2010. are you sure you've been anticipating both for the same amount of time?

Glad it's doing so well. Just pre-ordered from Best Buy to get the $10 reward and pop-up packaging. Have GCU and had a $5 certificate to use as well, so too good a deal to pass up.

Fall gaming schedule is all like this. It balances out. Some will skip it for those games like you, others like me will grab it and skip the others. I avoid long games in the fall, those are better saved for summer droughts for me, as I'd rather play through the shorter AAA games in the fall and winter since there are so many. So Fallout can wait. Battlefront I'll probably just skip. I love Star Wars, but I'm not much into competitive shooters and didn't have fun with the Beta.

Super Mario 3D World is blissful, Rayman Origins is very fun, and Yoshi's Wooly World is great.

They did finish with saying it's a well made game, and solidly entertaining, Just without an emotional reach and with "gimmiks". Whatever that means to you is for you, but I think most were expecting more of the same, just a bit bigger. To me it's fine. Hell, it's awesome.

Can't wait!

then is rotr really a system seller?

How many need to be sold for a game to be called a system seller? CoD/GTA/Fifa numbers? Becasue TR is not a big-bang like those.

Glad to see the great reviews. I loved the first one, so this one sounds fantastic based on the reviews. : D

Damn, I was about to get really interested in this game and the 2013 game but hearing this and the Eurogamer review is really sobering.
