Dragon Quest 7 and 8 for 3DS show up on Amazon [Update: Confirmed]

Oh, I'm so confused. I could have sworn I saw a post earlier in this thread (before mine) stating voice acting was out. I was just going off that.

I also didn't realize the scope of the update. I thought it was just a new ending and extra dungeon (I personally don't care for post game challenges) but faster battles and cleaned up OST are huge for me.

Hype back on.

No worries.

Not many people have been following DQ8 3DS since many have given up on it ever coming to other territories, hence the lack of reliable info.

I mostly know due the info dumps when this was announced for Japan and shared her impressions.

Aeana also provided more info when she played the Japanese version.

You're complaining that they made the soundtrack better? The original symphonic recording was taken in a concert hall rather than a proper studio. What is there to complain about?

I was comparing between the two. I noticed that there was a non-orchestrated track in the 3DS version and jumped to conclusions. It was actually also in the PS2 version.

That sounds like an upgrade, then. Even though I see the merit in having a grander sound like with a big concert hall.

What's this about better skill trees too?

My mistake. I meant more skills due to the added characters of course.

3DS's OST is fully orchestrated.

It would sound grander in a studio since you get a better recording.

SMG1/2 sound amazingly grand, all recorded in a studio.

New features added to DQ8 include:

  • Fully voiced in Japanese for the first time.
  • Orchestrated soundtrack.
  • Instant alchemy pot, with new recipes.
  • Much faster battles than the original version's, including a new high speed mode.
  • Visible enemies on the field.
  • New story and scenarios.
  • Geruda/Red and Morrie are now available as playable characters.
  • New weapon types and skills.
  • Visible equipment options for all characters.
  • Brand new sprawling dungeons with new enemies and bosses, including a new post-game dungeon.
  • New monsters, and new ranks in the battle arena.
  • New photo mode, including the ability to compose photos with stamps and send them to other players. There's a whole new quest system centered around taking photos.
  • Streetpass features using the photos from above.

So good.

This is nowhere NEAR being the sad cellphone port I suspected it to be then. That YouTube clip got me so ready for the music.

3DS's OST is fully orchestrated.

That's not true. I had initially thought that they would just use the symphonic OST from the international PS2 version. That's why I was wondering the extent to this re-recording. It seems like the vast majority is orchestrated, though.

And I meant that the concert hall gives things a grander sound. I don't always prefer a studio.

The DQ8 phone port is based on the original Japanese version, which had no VA or orchestrated OST.

The English PS2 release got an orchestra OST, sourced from a concert hall and VA.

And the 3DS maintained the same orchestra score, but recorded on a studio, so it's a better recording. It also got Japanese VA.

Hope that clears up the confusion with the soundtracks.

You're confusing me.

The 3DS is using an orchestra score, same as the PS2 version, but a studio recording.

I think he's saying that the acoustics of a concert hall make the music sound grander to him.

I think we're operating on a different understanding of what "grand" means.

How's the music in VII? Is it midi synth, or is it orchestrated as well?

Orchestra.

Personally I wish both had at least an option to switch back to the original midi. DQ7's is kinda drilled into my brain, I love it, and after messing around with my JP PS2 copy of DQ8 I like the way the music for that game sounds in midi.

Also sometimes you can hear the musicians breathing and stuff which I really hate. There's a section in DQ7 with some heavy flute and you can really hear the flutist huffing.

It's voiced in Japanese, but hasn't been confirmed that it's being voiced here. I can't imagine they would re record it, considering we have waited 3 years for 7 to just be translated and what the projected sales are, and that the iOS version is already out here. (I don't think at version had voice acting)Not sure how much of the original VA can be used. I'm assuming it won't be, but hopefully it makes it in.

As someone who's never played a dragon quest game which one of these should I get? I only plan on buying one so no whynotboth.jpeg.

VIII was better then VII in the original releases imo. But VII has apparently been rejigged due to pacing complaints so it will be a bit different story-wise. Someone who's played the Japanese VII could go into more depth as to what exactly they did to the story.

That said, I enjoyed VIII's battle system more then VII's anyway, so if you're only getting one I'd plump with VIII.

How would I play those? Lime, best way to get my hands on them?

Buy them for the 3/DS?

You could get the mobile ports but YMMV.

Or you could get them how everyone else got them for a decade-plus before they were re-released.

You're on the Internet, I'm really confused what's being asked here.

I'm throwing in my vote for 6. 4 and 5 have no class system and are a bit more linear.

Alright, pre ordered 7 on Amazon. Couldn't find 8, so will just keep checking.

Really looking forward to 7, was good on the PS1, but rough looking and if the sped it up should be a vastly better experience, and one that I'll actually finish this time.

Love 8 so will gladly play it again. Hope it still has the VA, lots of charm to it. Don't mind the graphics taking a slight hit since the screen is smaller anyways.

Compared to 7, 8 feels like a starter JRPG (at least the old ones seemed that way, hope they didn't change 7 to much) so if you haven't played one yet and want to try would say give 8 the time. It had depth to it, but didn't force you to do anything outside of the story really. The characters were also really good in 8 and it was more light hearted overall.

It's voiced in Japanese, but hasn't been confirmed that it's being voiced here.

There is like zero chance of this release being unvoiced. Worst-case scenario is that they use the original US voice track and just don't voice any new dialogue in the JP version.

It's amazing how misinformed people are about DQ8 3DS... how did that even happen?

Mix of unhinged mobile outrage bubbling over from the phone version and people downplaying this release since it isn't an HD remaster, I would guess.

Wasn't instant alchemy pot a post game reward in the PS2 version(s)?

"Instant alchemy pot"

Does this means you have the final upgrade from the beginning?

Then what do you get when you
beat the Lord of the Dragovians
?

Hah!

The 6 class system was a little weak.

The substantially lower draw distance to allow for on-screen enemies probably doesn't help. It's a worthwhile sacrifice though.

Plus there are missing art assets in the 3DS version. Dunno if that's for the same reason.

The rewards for that are changed up a bit, including a choice to unlock the new bonus dungeon.

Personally, I loved how nicely the PS2 game cleaned up in an emulator so this is going to feel like a big downgrade. Graphically, anyway.

That said, I didn't realize how significant the changes were so I'm buying it for sure. I'd rather play it on anything but a 3DS though.

Forgive me if this video has already been linked, but it shows that battles in the JP version of DQVIII 3DS take at least twice as long to load when compared to the PS2 version.

As someone pointed out, it's attributable to having to account for the monsters being visible on the field. The issue with load times in the PS2 game had more to do with menu access across the board (in battle, in the field, anywhere really), which I understand isn't an issue for the 3DS version, especially with the speed-up options in combat.

Yeah, both are good explanations. Especially the latter, if you go back into the threads before/during the reveal. A lot of people getting mad about it not being an HD remaster.
(Food point for the US voices re-use possibility if S-E ever decided for some reason toremove the JP voices btw)

Before DQ8 was announced for 3DS a lot of people were hoping for a PS4 remaster, or even a full remake, which would have been ridiculous. It's a testament to how good DQ8 looked on PS2 that even after 10 years it doesn't need a full scale remake, whereas DQ7 was begging for one.
