Anyone playing a stealth sniper, what's the best weapon you have found? And, from what and where?

Got a really good legendary sniper drop that shoots an extra projectile. Does something like 130 damage right now.

IIRC it was just from a super mutant in the middle of the city somewhere. He was nearly one shotting me as I fought him.

So we hating on people who put one point into lockpicking?

I have Master lockpicking and Master hacking.

I regret nothing.

it is insanely shallow. think more 'borderlands' than NV or FO1/2

there's not much left of the classic fallout/'rpg' formula in this game
Sorry, but I find remarks like these utterly ridiculous. It's like you all played different games than I did and make Fallout some sort of hallmark for "deep RPGs". It's not and never was. How is dumping 20+ points into "Small Guns" any different from getting 1 rank in "Rifleman" or "Commando", depending on what you want to specialize in? The new system is much more complex than the old system at its core. It's much improved overall and you now have much more flexibility while being able to be much more focused at the same time. You have way more weapons and all of them can be customized. Now it's not a deep crafting system, but it's still a decent addition and allows for a much better progression than any Fallout before. Found a Sniper Rifle? Set for the game. No upgrade, no nothing. Oh, got access to power armor? Set for the game. It makes exploration and leveling quite more enjoyable this time around.

That said, the dialogue IS dumbed down and I feel that you have overall less "different approaches" in quests and skill checks are missing, a change that I also don't like. Then again, Fallout skill checks are among the worst kind, since everything is %-based. F4 still does that for charisma checks and I still hate it. Hard skill checks or bust.

I got rid of Dogmeat as he kept setting off mines.

Huh, my Dogmeat doesn't set off any mines, he just constantly gets in the way and is always trying to get me to pick up Pipe Pistols cause he's super dumb. Also he occasionally attacks dudes while I'm trying be sneaky.

Stupid Dogmeat.

There's a combat rifle that fires two projectiles at once for sale in Vault
81
. Otherwise, if you find a hunting rifle/combat rifle you can just mod the hell out of it to make it rain death from afar.

Firing to bullet sounds great. I need to go get that. I have open enough mods to max out any hunting rifle. I have found 3 legendary with a 10 sec poison, 25 bleed and VATs usage. Just looking for something better.

I don't think it's useless. But if you have certain companions, one of the other might be worth not to level up.

Cait can lockpick anything and Nick can hack anything.

ok that means i need to change companions anytime I come by a lock or a terminal?
That seems excesive.

I think the consensus is that the rewards contained there-in aren't really worth the "wasted" perk point, which would arguably be better used elsewhere.

As for the dumbing down of the series, I think alot of it is hyperbole, apart from the streamline conversation system, I can't really say it's any less of an RPG than FO3 or NV was.

Is it? I may skip it then. I have the scavenger perk so don't need ammo.

Well so far I have not found anything "unique" in a locked safe or door that I can remember except the cryogun when you start the game. I think most safes are randomly generated loot of ammo and stimpacks or random guns like calibrated 10mm pistol.

Yeah that as well. The "Dogmeat has found something" gets annoying when he runs up to something already looted over and over again.

Damn for some reason I didn't see the tower part it increases the settlements happiness. But yeah my food/ water combines to 76, but my defence is 81. I have 18 settlers so far, but then I have max Charisma.

Also having an issue where one of my settlers is just taking up space, doing absolutely nothing. I assigned them to a store, they say "ok" and then just stand in the same position forever.

More that you can compensate. Like if you just have hacking you can roll with a companion to pick locks.

Personally I like being fully capable to take out both, but I do know there's a lot of redundancy(a lot of terminals can just unlock safes/doors you can lockpick). But I just use these to double dip on XP.

well that ha some truth to it.
i can currently open expert locks and terminals and have yet to find a single weapon that I wanted to replace any of my current ones..

yeah compensating sounds reasonable, but for me its too0 much hassle.
I will max out both perks asap.

I could've sworn I sent
Nick
to a master terminal and he couldn't do it.

I mean that if you use one of those companions all the time, you can instead max out the other skill yourself. But if you switch them from time to time, then it's worth it to level up both.

Sometimes they need a few tries, but they should be able to do it.

Where can I buy weapons at vault 81? Can't find it!

Also, for people on PC, what's the command to raise the WT limit? WT limit this low is ridiculous for a game with such a focus on looting.

How do criticals work in this game? I don't use VATS much but when I do there seems to be a crit bar at the bottom which is full, do I have to activate it some how?

Did you try to put some junk items around your settlement (on the floot, on furnitures,...) ? I'm trying to "decorate" my house but I feel like junk items are disappearing...

Happens with every big release, really wouldn't pay any heed to any of it.

Yeah, every major title this year seems to gone through same kind of shit. The words about F4 lately takes the price IMO, but maybe that was to be expected.

I'm 55 hours in and I just crave more all the time. I think it's still a solid upgrade both visually and gameplay wise compared to the older ones, and as much as fun.

One thing I'm very pleased with, I think it's the first time in a Bethesda game I feel the companions are people, not just empty shells that follow you around. They have a lot to say in different situations.

I agree. So much things improved.

Here is the thing. The gameplay is fantastic, best of the year. However, the stripping down of player agency with a completely predefined character, worse-than Mass Effect dialog system, removal of skills, removal of weapon condition, allowing points to be put into SPECIAL with every level, not tying shooting too heavily to skills/perks, etc has pissed off a lot of people, myself included. Fallout 4 pales in comparison to New Vegas and isn't really an RPG anymore. I can't help but imagine what this game would be like if Obisidian made it, even if they were forced to go with the same setting and having a voiced protagonist.

You have some valid points there, can't argue with most of them. It's hard to see potential RPG elements vasted, if only Bethesda had implemented some of the mechanics you mentioned, it probably could been a much richer experience.
Meanwhile I don't see Bethesdas choices regarding stripping RPG elements as laziness either, I think it brings out and focuses on other things like gameplay which is excellent IMO. But of course when expecting a fallout game with FO3/FNV in mind, I understand the disappointment.

Anyone playing a stealth sniper, what's the best weapon you have found? And, from what and where?
Read / see below. (Found the first one from a legendary bloatfly lol, the second can be purchased at
Vault 81
.)

ok, im starting to wonder where i will find a good, solid sniper rifle?
Im now lvl 20 and by now i have found a couple of solid combat shotguns, even some that where allready modded in the best possible way (for me). So im covered there.
But Im still running arround with that makeshift pipe rifle that I modded for long range shots.
When will i get a proper sniper rifle? I allready found some but these have all been a disapointment in damage, distance and precision (my pipe gun that i found at lvl3 is better in every aspect).

also, unrelated: Why do people think lockpicking and hacking is useless? How would you get into master locks and terminals without it? I dont understand. CAn someone explain?
A modded "Hunting Rifle" is the Sniper Rifle of the game. It's exactly like you imagine a sniper to be. I still use my modded legendary sniper rifle and will be using it probably for the rest of the game. (See below)
There is also a "Combat Sniper Rifle" in the game (see below). It deals less damage but fires much faster and has double the mag size. I still prefer the traditional sniper rifle tho. In particular with my x4 sneak damage. I one shot everything. If I get swarmed, I use VATS. If there is a tough enemy out of nowhere, better criticals + critical banker makes short work out of them. Also, a critical shot will ALWAYS HIT! So if you have a difficult shot at 1%, use a crit and get rid of that pesky legendary misslelauncher guy.

The damage is as high because I have 4/5 Rifleman and 3/3 Bloody Mess along with the best mod of everything and it effectively deals double damage because of the legendary modifier. It doesn't actually shoot or hit twice, it's really just double damage.

"Stabilize" modifier on your arm armor is a must! It makes using it so much better. I also can really recommend "medium scope" btw, it feels much better to use than the long scope. Another tip would be to use a "long barrel" combat shotgun as backup weapon. It's absolutely nuts.

(Still missing a silencer, but I don't use the weapon anyway, because it deals less damage).

edit: Lockpicking and Hacking are kinda very optional and rarely yield great loot. That said, Lockpicking is nice to have and with 3 points you are set for the game, it's really everywhere and gives you plenty of resources. I rarely see Hacking anywhere (advanced+). That is really a waste.

I think they use their companions? I know a lot of people were using the dog as a master locksmith

idk, I would never play w/o lockpicking and hacking either way but the rewards you get are generally crap

holy fuck.

now that is what im looking for.

OK, first task for today: finding a good hunting rifle!
thanks sir, this helped me.

Oh, does the rifleman perk also affect shotguns? I dont think so, but there also doesnt seem to be a dedicated shotgun perk?

Anyone managed to find a proper .45 revolver anywhere?, seem quite rare?

Yep, south of robotic disposal facility near Sanctuary is a random dead guy in a plaid shirt surrounded by mole rats, found one stashed near him, maybe near his body.

"Could" be random drop, I guess. Worth checking out if you're in the area,I suppose.

Rifleman affects ALL rifles that are non-automatic. That obviously includes shotguns (not with automatic receiver obviously) and even energy rifles.

For sure.

I should take a picture of all the ammo I have, it's insane. I hear people talk about struggling to get by while I want to actually just sell most of what I have.

Yeah, i've never had issues with ammo before but it's getting tight now. snagging that perk next chance i get.

Yep -- the Rifleman perk affects anything that isn't fully automatic, whether it's shotgun, plasma, etc. Though you can modify a combat shotgun to become automatic, in which case it would benefit from Commando instead.
