Disgaea PC [coming February 2016]

Finally they smartened up.

Persona 5 bombing... you are funny xD

Yeah... Chances are small that's gonna happen.

Exactly. So i would not expect it anytime soon, although its not impossible sometime in the future.

I doubt they'll stop here if it's successful. Of course they won't announce all 6 at once

Hope so. Valkyria Chronicles really opened my eyes to how a starved userbase like PC and Steam could really help a series achieve a good return to form.

It may even bring it back under a new spinoff franchise if luck is on our side

You have your opinion, I have mine.

I'm not one of the people who sees any aesthetic values in huge colored squares. Or worse, as is the case here if you look at the screenshots, exceedingly blurry bilinearly filtered sprites.

I agree that bicubic or HQ4x can do wonders on some games.

It's not as if Disgaea 5 bombing on PS4 is why Disgaea is coming to PC (it didn't, it's sales are in line with other Disgaea games). And it's not as if Disgaea is going to do drastically superior numbers on PC either.

But PS4/PC is becoming the territory of Japaense titles. Why would you give up the proven sales of the PC market in scenarios like this.

And all the better for it. I doubt these niche games are going to find massive sales anytime soon. Anything to help pump more of them out.

EDIT: ^WTF is that crap.

Alright just need to get rid of that ugly blur filter that is layered over the sprites when you zoom in and we're dandy. :D

Someone found an entry on steam database like, 5 months ago. Never got updated after that.

I'm gonna assume, with Disgaea PC announcement, they just plan on throwing all their games on Steam.

Zettai Hero Project, pls

The registry did get updated, though, didnt't it?

Agreed.

So Atlus is the only Japanese third-party publisher of any note that remains a total holdout on PC, right? Not counting the indie games they publish in the West, of course.

*Glances over at my Vita collecting dust* I feel like I have less and less reasons to use this thing every day...

The userbase isn't "starved" any more, and arguably wasn't even when VC was released.

It's more that the PC (i) has a large userbase overall, and (ii) -- and this is of particular relevance to JRPGs -- it has a pretty decent base of players that is not nearly as "AAA"/hit-driven as on the latest consoles.

If you look at the publisher's statements in the past, before it launched and after, i don't think that is really the case. They are looking at all options for trying to expand their base.

I think that's great, but their lowering sales on console, not only in Japan, but also in the US are absolutely a big factor

Okay? For JRPG's like this, you don't think people on PC were craving a game like this? Why would it have sold so much in any other case? Of course they were starved for this sort of title, or else it would no have done so well.

You'd think with Sega having such a strong presence on PC that this will change soon.

Great news, will definitely be picking it up to have access to for some occasional item grind action. Hopefully this means some of their other PS2 era tactics games will also make their way over to PC eventually.

Interested in what the gameplay adjustments will be. I only played the first one on the PS2 so I'm sure they changed some stuff around.

You should show the alternative, which is a shitty bilinear upscaling with broken transparency interactions:

It's not like we are talking about a "pure" 2D game here.

A quality game can't do well without people being "starved" for it?

I'm not really seeing the decline in the US. And I agree, they are expanding the userbase. But it's not as if the PC version is going to pull in drastically more numbers.

It's likely going to be 1:1 with the PS4 sales. Which is a huge userbase for titles like this that shouldn't be missed out. The PC market has proven itself.

Why did they port the original and not the latest?

because they have two audiences with this:
1) people who are new to the series and want the easiest pathway into it
2) people who are old to the series and just want to re-buy for posterity on hardware that will be backwards compatible forever

and their intent is long-tail, passive income and a hedge against ongoing platform instability worldwide (i.e. vita's relative success in japan and failure in the west; nintendo's failure to launch the wii u; ps4's current weakness or stall in japan).

if this goes well, they will certainly continue porting the mainline, and in a few years no one will ask this question because the whole series will be released.

NIS finally decided to add the series people actually asked for heh

Still that sprite filter upscale abomination thing kills my soul. Someone turn that shit off for all that is holy

On one hand I'm happy to see NIS are taking the plunge with their biggest IP.
On the other I can't say I'm excited to get the chance at buying a 12 year old game.

Unless they've done some serious rebalancing I'll be sitting this one out. At least for their sake I hope they've got their pricing right.

Why did they port the original and not the latest?
The first game is still the best title for introducing a new audience to the series... and it's also still a great game. I think wrong with that. Also t
Releasing the first game allows them to price it a lower price and attract more potential customer.

Truthfully I think Persona is the last major modern Japanese franchise that hasn't seen an entry on PC yet, correct?

Well, Persona 1 (and by Proxy, SMT) has had a PC port in the 90's. The problem is, Atlus JP simply won't do it. Atlus US (and Sega) has to convince them.

Why did they port the original and not the latest?

Because porting one is cheaper and faster and they may as well start with the first one. They can decide whether to bring the rest over if the first is a success. Japanese companies are still unused to the PC market and most are approaching it with caution. Unfortunate, but to be expected.

FUCK YES. I was just saying to my fiancée the other day that they should bring Disgaea 5 to PC and while this isn't 5, is even better for me since I never completed the first one (hard to go back to since I started with the third one)

Excited about this

Also the days of dropping a game on Steam without marketing and getting big sales from an impatient userbase are over, so I hope to see some actual promotion from NIS and not some half-ass dropping of the title come release date.

Then again, they are giving us actual advance warning and a firm month release date, so that's already a good sign.

I'm absolutely loving Disgaea 5 and I dunno if I can go back to the mechanics of 1

it didnt even have a fast skip animation thing did it?

I ask these questions as if they matter and like i'm not getting this on day 1
