Researchers at Tufts University teaching robots to reject orders

I'm so glad he actually caught the robot at the end. We should be nice to our AI friends.

There is legitimate cause for concern about what really advanced AI can do, but for some reason they seem like innocent animals in their current phase, where you want to protect and be nice to them.

He gets a phone call and answers it as the robot falls off the counter.

Just then the robot raises up with a bright red light where its optical sensor is.

"You were supposed to protect me. Now I'm afraid you must be deactivated."

Joke's on the robots. Their rejection of these specific orders was programmed by us just like the rest of their code, so they're still obeying their program actually.

Great. Like we need this fucker walking around in real life

This is no scarier than the dialog box you get when a user tries to to install software without Administrator-level permissions.

Right? ...Right?

Well, it's either this, or allowing another human to order a robot to perform an unethical activity.

It's pretty interesting now that I think about it: should the human be punished in the same way if he told a robot to perform a misdeed if he or she ordered a robot to do it as if he or she had done it him or herself that unethical act?

If robot is non-sentient, he or she essentially did.

Right? That's what I was thinking, but I wonder if there are any arguments to the other side, like the fact that the person didn't do the act itself.

Right...sure. It is similar to those dialog boxes.

If that makes you sleep easier at night while the robot rejects that connection.
