Xenoblade X Eurogamer Preview: Maybe 2015's Most Impressive Open World

Can someone explain to me how Overdrive works? When I watch someone activate it in a video, I can't really tell what's going on. The person just usually spams arts and then a "Total" pops up after some time.

Oh, just noticed something in a stream that's on Twitch... When he died to a boss a few times, something popped up asking if he'd like to lower the difficulty for the current mission. Are there actually difficulty options? Or is it just a thing that's saying you suck so here's some help? lol Wonder if it affects drops or anything.

Quick breakdown: Once you activate it (gears in the centre) you'll see the circle expand, a bar on the side of the circle and a list for Damage, Recast and Resistance. As you use Arts, each hit counts up in the circle and increases your list values. By switching art colours (orange -> yellow, or yellow -> purple, etc.) you get effects that you'll see indicated above the list of values (added time, appendage damage up, etc.). When the timer runs out, you see how much damage you've done. You can also see how much damage your party did in total if other people happened to be using Overdrive (but they might not so you'll just see your damage value again in party damage).

Someone feel free to correct me, I'm probably wrong.

Thanks for this. :) So is it better to switch between art types (colors) while in Overdrive? Or do you get bonuses by chaining together same color ones like in Xenoblade chain attacks?

Here's a trailer someone cut together if you want to stare at some beautiful landscapes. There's no spoilers.

Well this will probably be the most beautiful game I've played in a long time. HD really did wonders for them.

I love how diverse it is as well.

I really wish more games would go for a style instead of trying to show earth but with mythology. The style they have for this game makes it much better than most other games to me.

I'm getting Dark Souls vibes from its world although instead of a hopeless world it is one filled with mystery/discovery.

That pops up if you die to a boss several times, it causes the level of the boss to drop, dunno how it effects drops though (I doubt it does).

(I wonder if that's usable in speedruns or if it would be better just to mow right through them)

Man this is going to be quite the week to wait.

I'm really hoping to make an adequate Sniper/support class. I hope it's not locked behind a wall or anything early on.

So far I've heard that the Mastema is the best Skell for longer range combat. Are arts mostly similar to how the functioned in the first Xenoblade? With arts that let me draw/loose agro? I know that topple's still in but I just want to make sure I can create the type of class I'm envisioning.

man I saw a poll for character class somewhere and it was like 3% of people wanted to play a tank. I have no faith in NPC tanks after Xenoblade, only I can be trusted with that job.

Since it only affects the current mission, probably wouldn't too that fast to die over and over to trigger the enemy to drop levels. But I'm not sure.

That moviepilot review was pure hype.

Gamekult gave it an 8: http://translate.google.com/transla...test-xenoblade-chronicles-x-J3050108394t.html

Surprising with the "multiplayer is worthless/multi-zero mode (lol)" part considering the variety of things you can do, but we'll see.

Still called it an "unforgettable game" though.

I mean you don't gotta say, "I need a bigger gun." It's assumed.
That's a pretty high score for GK, i've never seen them going over 9 so that means they liked it a lot. It's also an import review, maybe things can change in the european one but even if they confirm the 8 it would still be a super positive score.

I didn't play the Japanese version far enough to get deep enough into Overdrive and it's been a long time (trying to save myself for the English version), so I'm gonna pull up info from Siliconera back when Overdrive was first shown.

Count-up Effect - The Gear Counter’s hit number goes up each time you use the same type of Arts consecutively, like Fighting Arts to Fighting Arts, or Shooting Arts to Shooting Arts. Depending on the number, there are effects such as “extend Gear Time,” “increased damage,” and “number of TP gained from attacks increased”.

Color Combo - As the Gear Counter’s color order changes (such as yellow to green) there will be extra effects such as “count number increase,” “increased positional damage,” “HP recovery,” and “bonus experience points”.

So I'd say it goes as far as what you want. But for myself, I'd go for a combination that lets me keep Overdrive going forever since I like the feeling of getting continuous triple cooldowns. Hopefully another (more knowledgeable) gaffer chimes in.

I think someone on GAF made this. List of arts and the various details.

Obviously has spoilers on characters etc. if that bothers you.

Thanks for the link! That was a good read. Makes a little more sense now.

can anyone link me to the wallpapers that was posted in this thread earlier

From the Xenoblade Chronicles X site's media page, here are zip files. 3 images in 6 sizes each.

December will be a tough month for my back account... gotta get all those games on discount on the eshop, plus X :)
About that landscape fan trailer, I shouldnt watch them as exploration is my main draw besides the Takahashi writing... Well just a bite wont hurt hah!
Can you make a Shulk replica or not? I know his voice is in there. If not I'll just try and make Fei from Xenogears.
Dunno if you can make a perfect replica, but close enough as far as I'm told.

Someone told me earlier in the thread that the default male was the Shulk-look-alike from the reveal trailer, but I can't confirm. Haven't seen the character creation.

I definitely want to try to make one look like him if possible since I'll be using his voice, too.

I still really wish they had dropped the whole customized character and just had an actual main character (I know people say Elma counts, but ya know lol). Or even with a customized character, make it more like Mass Effect where your character talks a lot and isn't just awkwardly there silent or making facial expressions. That weirded me out in White Knight Chronicles. Hopefully it's better here.

That was just a joke, it would be like saying that KOS-MOS is the main character of Xenosaga, she might be the hypest character, but the POV is still with your silent avatar. Talking about KOS-MOS, it would be cool if they could put her armor in this game...

Anyone else going to make their character the most bizarre looking they can as if you were customizing a WWE dude/dudette???

I mean, I don't think the game is a joke by any means but the characters are a bit generic looking so I am going to change that.

Yeah, that'd be awesome.

I saw one outfit Elma was wearing that reminded me a lot of (Xenoblade spoilers)
one of Fiora's mechanical outfits, though.

I doubt they would include, mostly because it's not their IP unfortunately...
Btw a tip so you can avoid spoilers, dont google image
Elma and KOSMOS or Xenoblade X and KOSMOS
, or else you will be spoiled HARD.

Thanks for the tip tho

This link should start you at the start of the character creator, pretty sure that starting default character is the Shulk lookalike from the reveal if I remember him correctly.

edit: This link might be more appropriate for you: https://youtu.be/FEz0Fa53B4s?t=8m

I might be remembering him incorrectly from the reveal, but I don't think that's him. At least the guy shown at the very end of the trailer. Maybe it's just the hair color being different tho.

EDIT: Looks different to me. <-- still an amazing reveal trailer. Probably hypest I've ever been for a game.

Been living the off TV struggle life with my Wii U for a year now

Bought a TV earlier this week from Best Buy

Got the limited edition of the game coming

Even used the promo code from Amazon to get the guide for $15 or so

I'm fucking ready.

I have like 17 days off work starting on December 18. Got a feeling I'm going to go no life on this game pretty hard over the holiday.

This guy is indeed the guy from the reveal trailer, it's just that the faces are more polished now and the hair color is different. You can tell primarily from the split ends it's the same hair due. You can change the hair color yourself to make it look more like the trailer guy.

Wow, even the split in their hair is near identical. Can't believe I never picked up on this.

I still think his facial structure/eyes/nose/etc look a bit different. I prefer the reveal looking guy personally, but I'm going to play around with the customization thing until I can make one that looks like him. If I can't, I'll just do something else but will definitely try to make a Shulk guy.

So I went ahead and preordered from Best Buy with GCU (it was given to me...which was great). However, I thought release date shipping was free? They're charging $11.99 for release date shipping and that would bring the total back to $60 (it's $48 normally). So sadly, I have to wait until December 7th to play...

I really can't wait to explore all of those continents. Anyway, from what I've seen, the character creator is pretty limited. I really wish there were more options and some better modeling as well. I just played the beta for Blade and Soul and it was a blast making a character in that game.

I still love the first two trailers we ever got on the game. I've watched them so many times that when I hear the music, I can virtually replay the whole trailer in my mind.

i preordered stuff before that and it was free

i preordered it after and i got it a few days later.

They should have went with a set character with a personality in my opinion.
