Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

Why are there no mentions of online multiplayer anywhere? I hope it was because the servers weren't up yet, rather than it being removed from the game...

Does anyone know how the multiplayer works? Been asking in threads for ages, but no one ever answers, haha!

Servers aren't up, people who got the game early said so in the other threead that online wasn't "on".

Man, I really hope this game sells well enough to justify it's existence. This is probably going to be the highest budgeted game on Wii U besides Zelda. Hopefully Nintendo markets it well...

Lol...they couldn't even bother releasing it before Black Friday.

Several of the reviews mention it and exactly how it works. Think Monster Hunter HUB style before setting out on an adventure - plus when connected seeing people appear in the world doing things that you can "recruit" for short periods of time. Most seem to feel it's a positive overall multiplayer experience, but it's more of a side dish the whole game. Doesn't take away from the game and it adds some more depth, but it's non essential. There isn't any in depth looks yet because in most areas of the world the servers weren't up. Still, some have experienced it and had nice things to say.

Yeah, the multiplayer looked like a cross between PSO and MH...did it get cancelled...? or will it come later...?

I think the direct coop multiplayer required using the passive multiplayer stuff, and thus critics haven't really been able to use it much yet, since the servers aren't exactly full. At least that's the impression I got

Goals you can work towards separately as a group IE defeat ten crabs, each of you defeat one and a group reward. People can also send you "support". And giantbomb said there was also a multiplayer teamup thing but there wasn't anyone online to try it with.

How are people rating the music?

I remember hearing some choice cuts a few months back... Was not too impressed. Does the final product come together?

I thought it was weird that they didn't, but I don't think Black Friday was going to change much. The audience for this game are the hardcore types who know exactly what they want and buy games year round. I think December releases still sell well.

I wrote the localized review and I didn't give it 14 out of 10. :P

Hater.

Some say it's one of the best OSTs in recent years and others were unimpressed. It all comes down to personal tastes, like i was saying this morning in the other thread.

Hell yes, I'm so glad that this game is living up to the expectations. I'm totally looking forward to picking this up on Christmas. I see myself going back to Xenoblade Chronicles if I enjoy this one enough too, but I'm sure this will absolutely keep me busy for a while. The hype is real!

Like I said, Polygon is the outlier, ignore them.

Great reviews all around, I knew this was going to be over 80 metacritic.

Open world games almost always review better than they should.
Actually usually true relative to my own tastes.

I'm kind of curious to read some reviews written by anyone who (like me) feels more negatively towards the first Xenoblade. Those impressions would be the most useful to me.

Sounded horrible to me when I listened to people playing it. But music is subjective I guess lol

Why are people surprised?

The prequel got great scores too. Were people expecting a critical flop with X?

There was a negative Kotaku import review that became very famous back during its launch. The posts in the importer thread here also seemed to be rather divisive.

Jim incessantly mentions his admiration for the music throughout his review:

The first game also got great reviews and was pretty dull and boring,so I can't say I'm really excited about those scores

However, that would have been the case regardless of how the game was reviewed.

And people laughed at me when I said that importers are too hard on games.

This is "The World Ends With You" all over again.

i dont take importers seriously unless they can read japanese especially when it comes to massive JRPG you miss out on so much when you cant understand the dialog.

I think most hope it does well enough to continue the series.

However, if Monolith works anything like the rest of Nintendo (and given Nintendo owns them, I don't know why they would work that differently) I doubt the budget was really any higher than it was for the last game, and that budget wasn't very big either. Nintendo likes to keep consistent employees. What that means is, the budget is basically just set by dev time. Let's assume this game started being made in 2011 - it released in Japan earlier this year. That's less than 4 years of dev time. Most Nintendo games sit in the oven that long, if not longer. Of course team size can have a lot to do with that budget too, but they don't typically hire on to increase the team, they just shift people from other teams when needed. Example - Monolith helped with Skyward Sword. Wouldn't be surprised if they are shifted now to help with Zelda U. Nintendo just moves parts around, but the budgets/salaries don't really change because of it.

I'd say the game has a fairly modest budget, TBH. Most of Nintendo's games are extremely modest in budget despite the quality. the first one did not sell even close to enough to justify big money investments, even compared to other Nintendo IP like Mario or Zelda. Metroid sold better more often and that series is "on hiatus"

That's what makes the game even more impressive. Because they proved you can create a game of the year type experience WITHOUT spending big.

Awesome scores! Was worried based off the initial import impressions and reviews, but it seems like it's pretty damn good.

I just wish the HUD wasn't so damn intrusive.

It's going to be a polarizing track. You'll either love it or absolutely fucking hate it. I'm kind of in the middle, but either way it fails miserably at even coming close to the original (to me anyways).

Score wise this is about what I expected - a bit better though I might add.

A lot of people were taking the word of Kotaku and a few people on Gaf who were negative about it, while ignoring all the positive reviews.

Wasn't that ages ago? Those Eurogamer impressions were pretty solid.

8-4's impressions were also off the charts too. They worked on the localization and were really excited too.
