Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

GameXplain's review states that the characters appear tropey if you don't do any of the Affinity Missions/Side Quests so that would explain why many of the reviews trash the characters -- they likely didn't do any or very little of the Affinity Missions.

Polygon's biggest complaint seems to be the not-so-intuitive presentation of, and lack of explanation for the game's more dense systems. I'm super OK with digging into a video game manual again.

Like I said, Polygon is the outlier, ignore them.

Great reviews all around, I knew this was going to be over 80 metacritic.
That sounds like the stupidest thing to do.

When everyone else is saying one thing and one or two people are offering differing opinions, always, always listen to them.

This isn't stats, reviews aren't empirical, you can't throw out the outlier when it comes to opinions or you will create an echo chamber and be surrounded by "yes" people.

Never throw out the contrarian opinion, you don't have to agree with it or like it but you should read it or listen to it so that you can have a true full picture.

But whatever dude do what you want it's just vidja games...

7 is a good score. If someone gave the original that score I wouldn't flinch. Its not like 7 means trash people.

Gamers are used to the 8-10 scale, where anything below that is trash.

Honestly, the press is to blame for not using the full scale until recently.

The fact that he's dedicating so much space to the UI is a bit strange for me, And somehow contradictory.

Because he says:

but then

So either it's useless info (not dedicated to you) or useful info, pick one.

So even Polygon mentions that you can turn off the HUD parts.

As someone who has played the game, I understand what he's talking about it. The UI is not elegantly designed to display crucial information in a small space. So you can either turn it off and get less crucial information, or have it on and have it take up the screen.

It's not really that big of a deal since 90% of it is only on during battle, but yeah, it's a thing. His complaint makes complete sense.

People are shitting on the polygon for silly reasons. I thought it was pretty well done with solid reasoning that will apply to many people here. It just depends on how much certain things bug you.

So this is likely the highest scoring game (so far) in Monolith's history? Amazing if so. Based on the reviews I'm expecting this to be a better game than Xenoblade, which is incredible since I heard XB itself is amazing. Good times.

Xenoblade Chronicles has a metacritic of 92. I doubt X will reach that.

Seems you get out of the game what you put into it.

This isn't an easy game to review because of how much shit there is to do.

It's below Polygon's average review score of 7.2.

lol
As long as they didn't putted 5, it's fine for me.

Yeah, a japanese reviewer said the same but in someway I think it's nice that we won't have too much tutorials to gone through before be able to explore.

There isn't much of a story and it's spread thin across what's mainly character-driven side quests. It takes multiple hours to unlock the next story mission, and there aren't a lot.

The game's bread and butter are affinity quests, which are goofy little character vignettes.

I'm more than aware of that, however OG Xenoblade's strength was in the story and characters.

Glad this is reviewing well. Wii U owners finally getting a high quality exclusive third party title.

Edit:
I'm an idiot.

Or people can read their review instead of shitting on it for no reason other than "the score is too low, they're just an outlier!" Actual discussion is better than blanket statements that aren't backed up at all.

people have different opinions???? but aren't all games reviews objective???

this game has a lot of stuff. some would say it has the most stuff. 10/10

I loved the first xenoblade and put hundreds of hours into it but if I had to give it a number score I'd be hard pressed to give it more than a 7/10. the story was awful, the dialogue was even worse, most of the side quests were boring filler. I could go on and on about the flaws. and if I was writing a review I would. not because I hate the game but because I love it and want to see better from future games. that's the main point of criticism.

but here on the internet the main point of criticism is to reinforce preconceived notions of unreleased games.

This is the first game I have actually bought a physical strategy guide for in years.

I'm new to the series and I kind of want a great story but I just want to run around naked through the landscapes more than anything.

Fly free!

After reading a ton of reviews, it seems critics are split on the ways in which the game is structured. Some like that fact that getting through the main story is a huge grind, making progression feel rewarding, while others hated it, wanting a more streamlined approach. I think if there's lots of payoff to the grinding (like in most RPG's), then it makes for a good game. At the same time, maybe the criticism of it 'padding out the game' could apply for certain players. Still, good scores all around.

7 isn't really a good score for games years and years in the making.

Technically, it's a good score but in all actuality, not really.

Most games take 2-3 years to make so I'm not really sure what you mean. If you divorce how long a game has been in development and just play it for what it is 7 is a fine score. I know gamers get all wrapped up in dev time but like eh, iu really shouldn't.

Yeah same. It seems a lot, lot harder this gen for games to attain scores above 90, as a lot of publishers have started giving much lower scores.

TW3, MGSV, Bloodborne, SM3DW, SSB. Wii U and Bayonetta 2 are the only ones that received it, and only MGSV and SM3DW were close to mid 90s, while all the rest were low 90s.

Wasn't that ages ago? Those Eurogamer impressions were pretty solid.

It was earlier this year during the import launch. GAF was hungry for any impressions and so an infamously negative story was co-opted into a crusade against the game despite several others trying to downplay that viewpoint. No one really knew what to think at the time and thus the spotlight shone brightest on the opinion that appeared most dour.

Polygon said:
XENOBLADE'S INABILITY TO CLEARLY DISPLAY INFORMATION IS APPARENT BY LOOKING AT A SHOT OF THE GAME'S UI

haven't a lot of people said that even though it looks like a lot of information as you play it everything you need to know is there and easy to find?

wut

Also, some critics should have watched the five part youube video series on Nintendo's channel explaining all the systems of the game lol.

Ok, long awaited games then.

Like a GTA, etc...

This game may be niche but it's one that many looked forward to for ages.

7 is really not a good score in video game reviews, and anyone who follows games media and is honest with himself knows it. 7 is a middling score at best. Just look at the little score distribution chart on OpenCritic. A 70/100 is on the low end of the scale, right where the graph starts to tail off into shame.

Not that I'm saying Polygon's review is unreasonable. I haven't played the damn game. And anyway, the review certainly seems reasonable, does a good job of supporting its conclusion, and the stuff it complains about sure sounds like stuff that would annoy me. I'm not criticizing Polygon.

Edit: damn

While I'm a fan of Xenoblade, I never found the story to be all that great, especially in the second half, but I'll agree in that it was the main draw for me over exploration and sidequests.

If you're in the same boat, I suggest you do a lot more research about this game before buying. It does have a lot of strengths over its predecessor, but it also has entirely different focuses. It's a really different beast.

This is why I don't get the Meteoritic hate some have. It's a great way to get a variety of impressions.

This only trust GAFfers thing is wacky to me. I like seeing a variety of opinions.

Yep, glad there's a few open people like ourselves out there. Too often sifes like neogaf become echo chambers especially in dedicated fanbases. Just garbage to ignore others opinions and trust me I know how that is when people openly admit to putting me on their ignore list because my opinions are different than theirs ha-ha.

A little off topic, but man why can we have MMO's this open? No instances, open world, sandbox game play. Just add more social systems and add more MMO features and you have a great MMO like no other.

ANyways, I think I'm gonna acutally pick this up, even if I'm not a fan of long single players games anymore
