Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

I recall the Japanese release getting about a whole point lower on average. Seems like a solid title in the West, just sucks this won't see the requisite sales. I'm thankful that if Bayonetta is anything to go by that Nintendo is more into the prestige business, and I hope the critical response encourages them to continue with the series regardless.

Not really

Japanese gaming publication Dengeki gave the game a positive review, referring to it as a masterpiece; they praised the gameplay, detailed world, story direction, and music, and said it has a "very high degree of perfection".[40] Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu gave Xenoblade Chronicles X a score of 34/40, with scores of 9, 9, 8 and 8 from the four reviewers;[39] they praised the gameplay, plot, large open world, and sense of freedom, but two of the reviewers criticized it for having an abundance of cutscenes.[41]

The game was the third best-selling game during its release week in Japan, selling around 85,000 copies.[42] During its second week and third week, it sold over 11,000 and 2,000 copies respectively.[43][44] In addition to its physical copies, the game garnered nearly 23,000 digital copies during May 2015. It was the most downloaded title in Japan for the month of May, largely surpassing other titles such as Minecraft, Bravely Second: End Layer, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.[45] As of June 2015, 110,000 physical copies had been sold.[46]

I am looking forward to seeing how the MP side of this pans out. I am way more interested in being able to wander around the world, doing stuff and have my friends there.
You won't be wandering with them but you can send messages and party with them for boss fights.

lol, dont worry about it,this thread moves too fast for edits ;)

I'm expecting to appreciate this game when I treat it like I'm living in this world and give it the attention it deserves, but there'll still be things I dislike or just drive me nuts. Party swapping, collectepedia, etc.

Don't know if I'll drop the money on a guide. Maybe after a weekend with it.

Read Polygon review, and listened to Destructoid and Gamexplain. Jim Sterling next.

From there, the game completely ceases to hold your hand, which is going to be a massive point of contention for some. Point blank, X is not a game you can casually pick up and play -- you need to immerse yourself in it. This not only goes for leveling up your character, but unlocking the requirements for story missions. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a tough and unforgiving game if you have no affinity toward the JRPG genre.

Sure, there are a few modern conveniences peppered in, like fast travel, a detailed world map (accessible at all times on the GamePad screen), and the ability to save anywhere, but you will need to master nearly every facet of X to progress past the first few chapters. Hell, you'll need to actually read the manual to pick up on a few major things, old-school style, and I ended up taking paper notes just like I did in the NES days. It's going to be a polarizing thing for sure, but personally, I'm stoked to play something like this again. Learning all the game's ins and outs was a joy. It's particularly satisfying to take everything in and feel like you've accomplished something.

A modern RPG game that expects me to be average intelligence and handle it? Yes!

Sorry, the system doesn't have the value for me to pay more than 199 € for it. No offense to anybody, I am not that into other Nintendo 1st party games, but this one and Bayonetta 2, I want.

I think you will be able to find one next year for this price. just wait for NX to release.

So this is likely the highest scoring game (so far) in Monolith's history? Amazing if so. Based on the reviews I'm expecting this to be a better game than Xenoblade, which is incredible since I heard XB itself is amazing. Good times.

Xenoblade was rated very highly. X looks good, I might even like it better, but I don't think the average scores from critics are going to be better.

Is there a list of all the playable characters? I've seen a couple reviews, and all the preview material, and I feel like I've only seen maybe 2 or 3 other characters outside the "main" ones. But there's a lot of different party members, right?

Not sure why they should be exempt from someone calling their UI what it is: A mess. Sure, it's a useful mess, but they could have condensed some of that stuff into a better design while leaving all that info up there. It's not elegant.

While it's not a game breaker by any means, yeah, it's a legitimate call out.

Ehhh... I think it's really easy to say that and call it out, but asking for a better design from a game that plays very much like an MMO in combat, especially when some of the "best" MMOs use nearly the exact same layout?

You've got your party info to the upper left, enemy nameplate at the top, map in upper right, tasks and mission info off to the right side, just like what you'd see in FFXIV or WoW. Yeah, those HUDs are customizable, but this one is too, you can turn off any offending elements if they are legitimately getting in the way of your combat experience.

If it could be designed any better I would imagine I would have seen it in a legit MMO by now, but I haven't, so I think calling out the UI here (especially when they have provided a way to alleviate the issue somewhat) kind of silly.

This is already below the average of the previous game.

That's not how it works. Co-op is only for dedicated monster battles. There's no free-roam co-op where you can hang out in the game with your buds.

Based on these scores it's one of the best games of the year, Nintendo delivered one of the best RPGs once again!

After watching the Giant Bomb quick look I've discovered that this game is kind of top to bottom my jam. I really wish I could play it. Sadly there's no Wii U in my future.

I keep hearing that the list is long and a bit spoilery but I have nothing to base that on since I haven't seen anything tangible myself.

I see the same 3-4 people over and over again.

8 9 and 7s its recieving better scores than expected, definetly a worthy purchase despite some of the added bloating and "improvments" to the first game

Wow. This is so god to hear. Is the manual color and thick?

Welcome to 2012 when you saw the last Wii U manual from Nintendo (Nintendo Land) ...

Dozens. You can recruit a ton of people in NLA.

Probably because people are trying to keep things spoiler free in previews and may not even be allowed to mention some of them

A little off topic, but man why can we have MMO's this open? No instances, open world, sandbox game play. Just add more social systems and add more MMO features and you have a great MMO like no other.

ANyways, I think I'm gonna acutally pick this up, even if I'm not a fan of long single players games anymore

You can also do 4 player online co-op, doesn't have to be all solo.

Amazing quote.

Well, people said that the race of the 13 year old girl was a spoiler but giantbomb just outright said it in their quicklook. But weren't allowed to show the manoon much at all so maybe.

I was one of those who were skeptical towards X after hearing about the import impressions. Particularly the fact that it's not structured as a traditional/linear JRPG, but is more like WRPGs in that you can do whatever you want and just explore a living, breathing world full of side activities. This design philosophy is fundamentally unappealing to me, so despite the reviews my hype has still not skyrocketed. I'm still excited for it and a day 1 buy but I don't expect it to blow me away as the original did. From what I understand this isn't Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it's something very different.

The game actually respects the intelligence of the player. That's good to hear and see in the videos I saw.

Now to decide if I should buy now or wait.
Were you not going to unless it had a Metacritic of 90 or something? :P

Game seems great if you were looking forward to it.

Their as long as Hazard's scoreless streak
Friendly banter :P

Anyways I got around 50hrs on main story for the first game and I was little over half way done...i should finish it one day

Haha ;D To be fair, despite him being my favorite CFC player for years, his performances during much of the season is shocking, like most of his teammates unfortunately :( They slightly improved in recent days but we're still 14th haha ^^ You're a Barca fan right? Very admirable team, I'm in love with Suarez's ability and Neymar/Messi complete what I believe is the best front three I've ever seen in a football team.

Why didn't you finish the main game yet? Make sure you do so before starting this one :D

Xenoblade was rated very highly. X looks good, I might even like it better, but I don't think the average scores from critics are going to be better.

Critics usually seem to be a bit harsher these days, though it's nice to hear that you may like it even more than the previous one!

This is already below the average of the previous game.

With all the high 90s i'm surprised the average is still in the low 80s :0

A lot of the 90s haven't been taken into account yet.
