Xenoblade Chronicles X - Review Thread

Are there any major complaints about pop-in in any of the reviews? I started to watch a video review and noticed it but ended up stopping because I don't want to see too much. I did notice the pop-in a good bit and hope it doesn't take away from what looks be an amazing game.

I've got the game pre-ordered digitally so maybe this is more an issue with the physical game especially if they don't have the digital packs installed?

One of the reviews mentioned great draw distance and stable frame rate

Weird, I thought it was going to be full of 6/10s, now I'm skeptical. Still good to see a game by Monolith Soft getting praise. :D

What are these 'Data Packs'?

Do I need a hard drive to play this game?

Not if you have enough space on the Wii U, they're option for the physical version of the game, if you go digital they're no use.

you dont need a hard drive to play the game, Data packs are basically installing data of the game to the console (or external hard drive) in order for the game to get rid of those pesky "pop in images" and they help load the game better.

Chuggaaconroy's LP of Xenoblade reminded me how fucking convenient a lot of XB was. Fast travel, very nice menus etc etc etc. Hope XBX won't take any steps back with this stuff.

I'm also reminded of the amount of different systems in XB, like achievements, collectables, crafting, stupid amounts of side quests, skills, arte levels, affinity and so on. Loved being able to progress my characters in tons of different ways. Looks like XBX is the same, just with EVEN MORE, which is something I'm really excited about.

This is from hardcoregamer review, which gives a descent analysis about the tech short comings.

Unfortunately, in order to render such a massive world, there are a few load screens when going from places like the barracks or a shopping screen back out to town, between some regions when fast-travelling and a pretty lengthy one when first firing up the game. The developers have also cut corners in the departments of draw-distance and aliasing. The biggest graphical offender in X is it’s awful pop-in. It’s easily some of the worst in the last decade or so. It makes sense given the scope of the game, but it’s no less noticeable and at times jarring.

I assume all of these reviews were with the physical game right and probably without the packs or maybe some were with? I hate having to ask this stuff but I hate spoilers so I'm sorry if I'm bugging you guys too much with this stuff.

But I love you all!

Ah okay thanks. I guess it's expected but man that's the first type of thing I notice in large games like this. Ah well, I'm still gonna enjoy the shit out of it.

My analysis piece is almost finished for the game! It has its fair share of compromises but, man, Monolith Soft put that Wii U hardware to work. What an amazing looking game overall.

Indeed. Messing with the games files, I've found what appears to be a settings file for numerous things. It has SSAO settings, the anti-aliasing settings, camera min-max settings, lens flare, god rays, etc. Seems the engine also supports DOF, but it's turned off, along with something called "ColReduction".

Not sure if the file's being used real time (still need to modify, repack, and get it to run to check it) but if it is this game could look even better someday on emulators, beyond a simple resolution bump. Also shows promise for their next project.

In one of the recent videos he did with GameXplain he mentioned one minor complaint. Changing your party requires you to actually find the party members you want to add in NLA instead of just adding them through a menu.

Yeah, it's an odd complaint. Especially since, outside of battle, you can turn the HUD completely off piece by piece.

Coming from the god awful UI in Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, this feels like a huge step up.

Any super quick impressions on framerate?

That's a bummer. Sounds unnecessarily annoying to the point that it makes you wonder just why it's in.

I'm the sort of player that likes to stick to a regular party of characters I actually like, though, so I imagine it won't really be that big a problem to me. Unless the party members like leaving the party randomly by their own, and I'd have to go get them back every time.

The pop-in (objects fading in and out of existence) is pretty noticeable, especially in the town, but it never seems to affect the frame rate, thankfully.

Wow! This is doing much better than I expected it to! Good for Monolith. I was going to pick it up anyway at some point, but this has just solidified that.

That's true, but there are some improvements also. Inventory management is easier since you can hold 99 of each item, and once you hit the max they automatically start selling excess stuff. Then you got the gamepad integration with the maps and easier traversal thanks to sprinting, no fall damage, and the mechs obviously. Seems quests are better organized too.

What I want to know is whether or not the custom USB with the special edition can be reformatted, and fit the data packs used for this game.

Reading the reviews now, the only one I don't really understand is the Game Informer one.

Their main complaints seem to be what the other reviews say is not the case at all.

EU reviews were digital.

US reviewers had discs but I don't know if it's all-discs or mixed. I just know because the GameXplain guys posted a s hot of the disc when they got their review copy. They did have the data packs installed.

Oh fuck yes. Having 99 of a particular item and then getting one from a chest was a tiny bit annoying in XB.

Can't wait to also see the stuff they do with the gamepad. Unless it's "just" for map use?

e: also also, I hope I'll be able to break the game by fucking around a bit. Nothing more fun than breaking a JRPG and absolutely smashing through most fights for a looong time if I want to

I think you also use it to customize your data probes.

so I need a harddrive for the data packs? is this ok?

This is from an old memory of mine but back then people said on GAF : "be sure to buy an external drive with it's own alientation/power cord otherwise you might witness some bugs like loosing your saved games."

I don't know if this info is still revelevant since it's been months agos, I read it.
I will try to find the original thread.

It's really strange that the people that got early copies of the SE haven't said anything about it. I would imagine that since there's only 10 tracks on there, there's likely to not be much space on there, but there's not even a peep.

Isn't that if you download full games to the hard drive? Shouldn't be a big deal if just the data packs are on there right?

Shame about the art direction on the character models :/
Yeah, that's my biggest issue really. Most of the characters are quite ugly.

Any super quick impressions on framerate?
I have four words for you

stability
stability

Wait are you serious?
That's rather lame. I really enjoyed the convenience of swapping out characters on the fly. Having to return to NLA while in the middle of a mission to swap team members? Ehh sounds like a major inconvenience when you realize a swap in battle strategy will benefit the situation.

Guys can you recommend to me a good high framerate/IQ video highlighting various areas, exploration and combat that I could use to show off to others I think may want to give this a shot?

Polygon: 70
Monolith Soft has once more created something special under the Xenoblade name; it just happens to have buried that something special under a mountain of annoyances.

this review is so odd...and sounds so salty.. for whatever reason.

The last video that has been posted in the other thread was nicely received by gaffers :
