They really should let you download these games by putting in your existing disk. Pretty scummy to call it backwards compatibility otherwise.

I also wouldn't have bothered with straight PS2 games, but I'm holding them to a higher standard here, a standard that they themselves created. I prefer this over any straight BC solution.

However, Sony has had a consistent and well-received cross-buy program running for years. It was only natural to expect at the very least for PS2 Classics licenses to transfer over.
Well, that text can be covering their ass, but I'm kind of fearing the worst. I'm hoping they at least take a cue from Nintendo and have an upgrade promotion so you can get games you own (as PS2 classics) for something like $2-5 instead of full price, but sometimes Sony can be painfully non-friendly in those areas. And it's kind of rotten precident in a time when forward compatibility is more of an expected thing, but then again I guess mobile's a double edged sword in also leaving many things to burn with OS updates.

EDIT: And I still worry that insistence on trophies may hobble getting some older games, but then they could always just half ass it and it's not like lacking those has been some boon for getting a wide library of titles, outside of PS1 games in Japan anyway.

Only have twisted Metal (got for free)
And vice city and San Andreas, so this doesn't really sting me that much.

How different are these games though to the PS2 version, in terms of soundtrack?

Also if you don't like the price then just wait for a sale and get them for half.

You're right they should definitely not call it backwards comparability...

...hey guess what I have some fantastic news, they aren't calling it backwards compatibility.

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

Now that is pretty cool.

Will this come out this year? I really want to play 1080p rogue galaxy.
Tomorrow!

I'm surprised people are reacting positively to this, the implications this have on their entire policy for dealing with digital game ownership is terrible (and absolutely stupid, if Valve had public traded stocks I would be getting them right now, Sony is positioning themselves to have a long lasting disadvantage).

This is a strong indication that you won't be able to play your digitally owned PS4 games on the PS5 regardless of its architecture. This goes against everething you come to expect of digital goods consumption in 2015.

Look at the post above you, lol.

Haha, not happening. Sony should just sell the emulator and let me play my discs. Probably going to turn out like the classics on the PS3 being just ordinary isos which will just make this even worse. Would gladly throw a few dollars to Sony just for the convienece of using my ps4 but guess I'll stick to pc and play my games at 1080p there, lol

Not really impressed with the price and the fact it's confirmed disc-less, but Rogue Galaxy looks really damn good. I'll probably get it.

I am looking forward to playing Rogue Galaxy again. It's been many moons. Now just put Xenosaga games on there and I will be content.

What a shit service! I never thought Sony would be so behind Microsoft and even Nintendo in terms of value.
My PS1 downloads had better transfer over and be free

Why? You paid to play them on PS3, no? Did they say they would be compatible with PS4 and any future system?

At one point, PS1/PS2 classics from PS3 will stop working. Do you really expect that $6 purchase will stay playable until Playstation 10? How about you enjoy your game on the platform you buy it in and if its compatible down the line in the new gen, thats a bonus.

Not only that but will $15 will kill you? Rogue Galaxy, an RPG, at the price of a small PSN/digital title is a sweet price me thinks. I mean people are willing to spend $150 on an Xbox controller. Sure people can spend their money how they wish but $15 for a PS2 classic seems like an OK in general. Too much for you? Play your PS2 copy at 480P or less on your old PS2 with no trophies or any of the PS4's OS support. (like streaming)

edit: Actually just play your PS2 games on a high end PC. No additional purchase. Hope you or anyone doing this doesnt complain aboout CPU and GPU prices next though.

if the upres is legit i can easily see myself sinking money for games on this service. Stuff like Rogue Galaxy and Mark of Kiri i never got to play before, and if they bring stuff like Shadow Hearts 1+2 or the .hack//G.U trilogy they'll be milking money from me easy. also the prospect of possible ports of ps2 fighting games like KOF2K and maybe later on the alpha anthology , KOFXI, and Guilty Gear XXAC+ would further make the PS4 the new defacto fighting system

Yeah, they should really do something about the digital ones they already sold. Even if it's a token fee for the work in upressing, like Nintendo did with Wii U. Bit shitty in those instances, certainly. I looked at the store, and thought £10.99 was probably a little overpriced too.

I hope this means there is a chance at getting PS2 games with PS+ in the future. Maybe not since PS2 Classics never made it on PS3.

I would say when it comes to digital people should not settle for getting fucked and not have their purchases transfer over in some way. You want to think your purchases don't get stranded on a system that may not work many years later, or have online services get taken down so you can't redownload the game.

If this industry wants to embrace all digital the right way, they have to give something back to the consumer in exchange for the inherent sacrifices digital has. That means preserving purchased games from console to console, and creating an ecosystem where the stuff you buy is as valuable as a physical purchase. This is why Steam has been so successful.

It's easy to say "oh tough shit just rebuy it it's not that expensive." And sure, $15 isn't bad for the games you're getting. But you'd like to think these console manufacturers are thinking about digital preservation and not thinking they can recharge consumers every cycle again and again.

We need more negativity then, this ain't cutting it.
We really don't not in every single thread at least it takes away from people excited. This reminds me of how when gravity rush 2 was announced every threas during that time was vita port begging and blaming sony. Know what happened a mod had to shut that convo down and warn it was ban worthy now. So why deluge every thread into a negative spiral with this. 6 threads so far, same replys, same people, same stuff. We can't do anything here on gaf go tweet yosh, adam whoever go on the blog but sincr its announced and we are at this point, we should be able to be excited and talk about the actual feature now.(and im not even saying you guys are wrong, i feel for yall that spent on ps classics)

i expected more outrage too honestly

i was surprised by the like bar too

Im not surprised at all gaf is a minority. The majority are jumping up nd down excited i guarantee(for better or worst
