PlayStation 2 comes to PS4 official trailer

neurosyphilis

Definitely not an STD, as I'm a pure.
I'm not ok with rebuying games for $15 being the ONLY option when Ps4 clearly has the capability to let us run our Ps2 discs upscaled.

Of course it's cool to sell games digitally, I'd even buy some for games I don't have on my disc collection.

But I guess I was hoping Sony would be pushed to do something to respond to Microsoft's (free) backwards compatibility push. The cell processor wouldn't allow for emulation of Ps3 games, so the next best thing would be Ps2/Ps1 titles upscaled through a PCSX2-style emulator app on the Ps4.

I'm dreaming I guess.
Not saying I disagree with you and I understand what you mean, but do you know why they won't allow it ? Perhaps there is a legit reason and not "Oh arrogant evil Sony is back", like a lot of people in this thread is basically trying to insuate. We don't know what's the process or whatever. And this isn't trying to compete with Xbox BC, as this was in the making for years, we heard about this a couple years ago.

Between those two which would you recommend? I know literally nothing about either.

Does dark cloud 2 follow from the first or are they different stories?

It's a tough choice, both are good but if you've never played either then looking at each objectively Rogue Galaxy is the way more smoothly modern fully fleshed out game (and the benefits of looking like a later PS2 game) since Dark Cloud 1 was so early but DC does have some nifty ideas and some hard challenges that some liked and some didn't like (breakable weapons and the water/thirst system).

They are both by the same studio so Rogue Galaxy benefited from their past work like Dark Cloud 2 also did.

Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud 2 are two of my favorites of Level-5's but admittedly it's been years since I played DC1 so take with a bit of grain of salt.

They don't follow each other.

As excited as I am for Rogue Legacy, I think it's a pretty crummy move to not allow PS2 discs to run on the hardware natively. Ultimately, I hope the press and the community make some noise and force Sony to make a move.

Got to admit I am very disappointed in this news. I mean, The xbox division is financially worse than Sony PlayStation division and yet they gave us a last gen games compatibility for free. Sony wants to charge us to buy games we already own from 2 generations back ????

I mean ok, you can't pull a PS3 emulator for whatever reasons I might want to convince my self like an Nvidia licenses problem or it's not possible to emulate the PS3 on ps4, but Ps2 ? Ps1 and ps2 emulation should have been there day one free of charge.

Xbox, MS and Nintendo should follow the IOS / android / PC ecosystem. You bought the games ! It's yours you can play it on any new old iOS / android / pc you buy . Period.

I am one of those guys who hook up his GameCube or Wii to play f zero . So yes I do want to play some old games I consider classics from time to time. And I should be able to if I am buying a system from the same company.

I hope no one buy any shit ps2 games and it falls flat on their face for being cheap fucks.

I really don't feel like buying Dark Cloud again for the same price I paid a literal decade ago, even if it's an upres version.

The 9.99 price I like the 14.99 price is lil high but it's ok although I would really like to know how do they decide what gets which price?

Also to all those still complaining at least you guys technically get free multi-player with ps+ subscription because of share play.

They won't allow discs, no matter what anyone says.

At most, a legacy program for digital owners will come, but discs might as well not even be apart of the conversation.

Since Microsoft is in 2nd place this gen wouldn't you think they would try harder to win back people?

I mean it's just common business sense.

Why? This thread clearly shows there is interest. Where there is demand there will be someone there to sell stuff to fulfill that demand. Otherwise why bother at all? Making it work natively benefits Sony in no way and in fact would lose them money.

For those interested in Dark Cloud

It's pretty difficult with the thirst system and weapon durability. Dark Cloud 2 did it much better but Dark Cloud provided the base. It's a really fun game though and I recommend it as its definitely one of the funner ps2 games. Dark Cloud 2 though dances miles around it and I hope they rerelease that cause I'd double dip so hard you could call me Christina Millian

Wow its not free bc but psn pay games? Lol no thanks.

That's what PS1 and PS2 classics are. They never promised disc BC. And i told people months ago to never expect such a dream.

Digital license honoring, i'm somewhat raw about.

They don't need PS3 guts to bring over the emulator that was already running the digital copies of these games. Just like they don't need to charge you $15 for a game you already bought with a trophy list. Nor do they deserve the double dip for only now barely catching up to what emulation coders did in their spare time years ago - just like they've been behind Xbox on the network front for 15 years running, and still going strong. Please tell me you did not just deny that because they're number one worldwide.

Twelve pages of damage control on a Friday night - SonyGAF really putting in that work.

I was talking in general. Lack of sight, on the online space yes, businesswise...no. You are assuming this is just an emulator and Sony just wraps some ISO up and trophies and everything just pop up. If they spent R&D money on this, they will want to make some money back.

Just because some pc coders have been doing emulation means jack. Sony still has to come up with a method for their closed system. I agree Sony is behind on online stuff but they are not that far off. Remember that the biggest issue were OS features on PS3. No Cross chat or parties made Live much much better proposition. Newer systems have those features but yea they have to quit it with the maintenance days and allow you to change your ID etc.

Though if you are going to generalize people who dont agree with your views, guess we'll just end it here. I've called out Sony lots of times and yes it has to do with PSN.

Lastly I've never bought PS2 classics on PS3 because they were pure ASS. Like I got Twisted Metal Black free from buying TMPS3 and boy did it mess the fond views I had of it. Frames were below 30, drops, jaggie. EW!!

Def gonna buy this one as long as its silky 60FPS and can gameshare offline MP!! Best TM game to date. (well from PS2 memories!)

Seriously their 2 entirely different digital products. It's like buying an album on iTunes only to see a remastered version with new songs released later at a higher price. Your not entitled to both products. Your entitled to what you pay for.

It would have been nice for an discounted upgrade but again they aren't entitled to give it to us.

that's implying the emulator increasing internal resolution requires tons of work on each game

Rogue Galaxy is a great action RPG, I'm glad new gamers will get to experience it. I'd rebuy maybe, but not at $15.

Come on Sony.

Easy to satisfy both camps. Purchase option for the emulator that offers basic disc play. Higher res and framerate but no trophies or other share / remote features. Continue to offer trophy and other ps4 enhanced versions to those that want them. Chances are, some that opt for the basic would also dip into the digital versions.

Oh yeah i agree of course. But also a common business sense is to make money. They could have got away with charging 5$ or 3$ for each game you own and you would get a license to play your game on xbox one. Heck they could have pulled it off with 2$ even and made shit tons of money.

Regardless what makes more business sense free/ charge a small amount. The end results xbox one owners got free 360 backward compatibility. Ps4 owners didn't get shit ps3. And pay 15$ to get a stupid ps2 game that you probably already own just to play it.

is there any chance of silent hill 2 and 3 happening or will they overlook it because of the HD collection?

plus it would be great if they did all the yakuzas

I mean, Sony does just wrap an ISO in an emulator and instantly gain basically every feature EXCEPT trophies, which are the only thing that would require specific coding.

Yea and what good did that do? MS literally ate money on the 360 BC stuff only to still fall further behind. At this point the 360 BC is mostly forgotten about by and large, because as we all thought low and behold majority of the people would rather play the new hotness. Sony is just trying to make some money off those that really really want it while the majority of everyone else just ignores this entirely. Adding trophies was kinda brilliant though as it may get some of the fence sitters.

I'm kinda playing devils advocate here but what is the benefit for Sony to satisfy the camp that wants to play their ps2 discs on a ps4? I'm trying to be cynical about this whole thing, but just being realistic. There's demand and Sony is selling a good to fulfill said demand. Simple as that.

I don't agree that Xbox One BC is forgotten since it's less than 30 days old and new games are going to be announced in the next few days. But I do think that adding BC will get some of the fence sitters like you said, some went from PS2 to Xbox 360 and now have the chance of coming back to PS4, especially with their old favorites showing up on this new console.

But the thing that everyone should remember is that if you are unhappy with the price, you definitely shouldn't pay it, then. There's always going to be the PS2 Classics on PS3, those won't go away. I don't plan on buying most of the games that will be announced, only games I loved or don't have on PS2 Classics yet. The price isn't that awful when you consider some of the games and their huge amount of content. Are some of them potentially going to be overpriced? Sure. But it's all about what you think value is.

1080p with no AA is some bullshit. Supersampling or bust. I mean seriously this stuff is two gens old. And the pricing... lol. And it's bad enough that my discs don't work, but if I'd actually bought any of this stuff on PSN for PS3 I'd probably be burning effigies of Sony employees right now.

Dark Cloud 2 also got re-rated recently so I think it's coming :)

With Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud stuff both in the early push I'm really interested in seeing what Level 5's PS4 game is. Even if it's not a direct game from those I wouldn't mind atleast a spiritual sequel that builds off of one of these. Since I think this first game might be a co-production with Sony and then they'll use what they learned from their first PS4 game for something like Ni No Kuni 2.

Rebuying the game you already own for trophies is brilliant ? Lol I am done here. This is too much.

If you own those games already then clearly this service isn't for you. Who is forcing you to rebuy said games? If you own that game then find a way to play that game you own rather than waiting on some company to solve your problem.

This is a service targeted at nostalgia and offering those that missed that gen to pick up some games and trophies may tip some yes.

This makes no sense to me. Sony advertises cross-buy for current gen games like its some HUGE deal... but wont give cross buy to the people who supported them over the years by buying the disc, or classic? did they think they would lose that much money?

If you think about it like this... they arent targeting people who already own it... right? so where are they losing money? the people who dont own the game are going to buy it, the people who do own the game probably arent. i mean... people who already own the games are more likely to NOT buy it because of this... right? i know i wont. so if they did make disc support available... then i would use it... either way they wouldnt make money off me. so, how would they lose money if they just gave us disc support?

this is what im talking about... if the service isnt for people who already own the game... how would they lose money by making disc based BC available?

$9.99 for the two games I want most with improved visuals, boosted frame rates, trophies, and share play seems fair to me.

I did mention paying for the emulator. Goes toward your supply and demand stance.

Probably because it will take extra development time. This is probably pretty easy to do on their end.

They probably don't have to work on the emulator in the future to add extra games, and hear people complain about why a certain game isn't on there.

Here they can hear what people want, and then put it up.

They should probably offer a discount program or a cross buy, I agree... but disc based emulation is totally lame. People seem to think it's great but if you're honest about it.... how often would you go out and buy a PS2 disc or use an old PS2 disc to play a game? I know I would probably use it like twice.

With this. I just download. It's there. Let's play this gem I missed. I don't have to go to a game store, or search for it online. It's on PSN ready to go.
