Is this legit?

It's finally here. Many have anticipated this movie for decades, and next week audiences everywhere will experience the sequel to Return of the Jedi. Think about that.

Today I received the privilege of viewing the movie a little early. It doesn't wait long to smack you in the face with nostalgia. From the pan down from opening crawl to the barren world of Jakku, you can immediately tell this was directed by a guy absolutely in love with A New Hope.

The Republic has been reestablished and there is relative peace in the galaxy, but tensions have grown in the outer rim systems as a militaristic movement called the First Order has grown larger in force and support and systems in the core of the Galaxy have turned a blind eye. This doesn't sit well with one Leia Organa, who despite the Senate voting not to interfere, secretly funds a resistance movement to fight against the First Order's growing might.

Now General Organa has been contacted by a man on Jakku claiming to be in possession of secret plans for a weapon that could lead the First Order to not only conquer the outer rim, but the entire galaxy as well. She's sent a small squadron to retrieve the plans knowing a faction of the First Order is nearby.

Thus, the events of The Force Awakens are set in motion. The Squadron, lead by Poe Dameron, is ambushed upon arrival and only Poe survives to meat with the mysterious Lor San Tekka. Tracking Poe the First Order organizes an all out assault on the village in an attempt to keep the plans from falling into the hands of the resistance. It's here we meet Finn, a Stormtrooper who has a change of heart when the icy Captain Phasma orders that they begin killing unarmed villagers. Poe knows he won't be able to escape and hides the plans in his droid BB-8 and sends him off into the vast desert. Poe is captured and taken aboard the flagship Finalizer for questioning. I told you, chalk full of nostalgia.

The evil and mysterious Kylo Ren interrogates Poe and eventually finds out that they are looking for an astromech droid.

That astromech droid survives its night in the desert before being discovered by Rey, a scavenger who says her family left her on Jakku when she was very young.

Finn's change of heart leads him to team up with Poe to steal a TIE fighter and escape, but Poe wants to go back to Jakku to get BB8. They're shot down and Poe is ejected. Finn wakes up and desperate for water heads toward a civilization, where he steals Rey's water.

Our Heroes' fates are forever intertwined thereafter.

Of the new cast, Boyega and Driver absolutely steal this one, and their characters are by far the most interesting. Andy Serkis' mo cap performance is short on screen time but no less incredible than what we've come to expect from him.

Sydow I fell was completely wasted. His part could have been played by a newcomer and nothing would have been lost.

Ridley has a few moments where her performance falls a bit flat, but overall it's a solid debut for the young actress.

Of the OG cast, Harrison Ford has the most screen time, but Mark Hammil fucking kills it. I will not ruin the grand entrance, but know that this was one of three moments in the film that drew raucous applause.

One thing that surprised me about the movie was the humor dynamic. Incredible how in a movie where you watch a whole solar system snuffed out your genuinely laughing 15 minutes either side of. The chemistry and back and forth between Finn and Han was golden. So many great one liners and ribbing between the two.

I know it will be asked so I'll say YES, this movie 100% felt like a Star Wars movie. It managed to recapture that sense of awe the OT carried with it.

It's Abrams and Kasdan, so of course there are plenty of twists and turns before the end, but all felt natural.

Overall I rate The Force Awakens a solid 8.5/10

Positives:

Nostalgia

Story

Action

Visuals

Sounds

Music

Humor

Luke

The twists

Negatives:

some Ridley moments took me out of what should have been really immersing scenes.

Sydow totally wasted.

Hux had no depth.

A really fun movie. Nothing earth shattering. Just a good, entertaining movie.

It probably doesn't matter if it is or isn't at this point. But the amount of stuff reddit users have actually contributed to the knowledge base of this film is soooooo tiny, that there's really no point in consistently checking it. Especially not with less than a week to go, I don't think. For all intents and purposes, they're just another messageboard, that's all.

Also it's CHOCK full, not "Chalk" full.

As a spoiler fiend this last roughly 2 years on this movie I can't wait for this to be over. The worst time for spoilers is right before it releases. That's when everyone comes out of the woodwork with made up nonsense.

What in the world so legit about that crazy? He is claiming Endor is in the movie and that MSW got everything but the first 15 minutes wrong. He is just making up nonsense.

He seems to have plausible answers to most of the questions thrown at him. Most likely just a great troll but who knows right? lol

I'm gonna have to put something in the OP telling people that 99.99% of everything someone linked you from a subreddit is bullshit so don't bring it up, aren't I.

His answers aren't plausible at all and directly contradict what we know of this movie from the shot list. He is making it as he goes. I mean Endor come on.

Don't give this troll and idiot any attention, come on. You can smell the bullshit a mile away if you have been a long time spoiler follower of this film.

But what if JJ has had a vendetta against those little furry bastards lol I'm just saying this guy is relentless. lol

Because we know the entire outline of the movie shot for shot. They aren't going to Endor or killing Ewoks. The guy is 100% full of shit. That is not even a question.

Why in the world would you consider a guy who says the final duel is set to Duel of Fates not an original theme and that they kill Ewoks in the movie. He doesn't just not know what he is talking about he is bad at making this up.

It's actually hilarious.

Now I know nothing is 100%, but from the shot list we've had for months, literally every single bit of information or footage fits it perfectly. We know the broad strokes; it's the delivery and how it's depicted that's still unknown. I don't quite understand the mindset to make stuff up, let alone believe it when there's solid reasoning behind the story board. Denial? Boredom? For the lulz?

NOTE: A lot of you are probably going to try and be helpful by contributing your own tidbits and interesting bits of rumor and speculation you and/or a friend might have stumbled over in the week before the movie opens. While that's absolutely appreciated, know this: Roughly 99.99% of anything ever posted at any particular Star Wars subreddit you've ever subbed to is total bullshit. The Spoilerboard above, while it is guaranteed to have some details wrong, and some misguided speculation in it, is mostly backed up by every single piece of pre-release marketing. Please make sure, if you're going to be helpful, that you're familiar with that document before you link really specious garbage from reddit that directly contradicts that info. Basically: Think before you post, please.

DONE.

WELP NEVERMIND THEN

And in the last act they jump out of light speed in the middle of the planets atmosphere rather than in space to bypass the First Order ships.

Abrams Trek and Wars movies seem to both like adding new takes on established light speed/warp speed ideas.

There was a rumour the Falcon was gonna get onto Starkiller base by jumping out of hyperspace right to the surface as well.

Certainly looks like an idea they toyed with.

Based on tv spots that is the case in the final film and matches the leaks from the shot list.

so Han is stealing ideas straight outta the Adama playbook, huh?

If you're gonna steal, steal from the best.

This also explains why we get the reverse angle on the jump to lightspeed. Its gonna be the punchline to this gag.

Its gonna fuckin play like gangbusters

To be fair, as has been mentioned by the crew behind the film, Star Wars has never been sci-fi, but rather straight up fantasy. They can take as many liberties as they want as long as they successfully convince the audience to suspend belief for a sec.

I do think all the call-backs, fan service and nostalgia trips, whilst hopefully well handled and narratively relevant, will cause some criticism for people wanting to find faults. Likewise, moments like jumping out of light speed inside a planet's atmosphere will also cause a stir, I'm sure, but hell, if there's a man who can pull it off, it's the guy who made the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs, can successfully evade the Imperial fleet inside an asteroid, and then hide on the side of a Star Destroyer before drifting off with the garbage.

I'm willing to believe Han can do just about anything with that ship. And the people who complain about shit like this are probably the same people who were going to find fault with the movie regardless. I'd rather they do crazy things that we didn't think were possible than stick in the boundaries of what we know to be possible and make a boring movie, because like you said, it's fantasy.
