Ezio, Link and Heihachi were amazing guest characters though. The SW cast was shit, but the novelty of using Darth Vader was fun for a while.

oh god... why does Namco's Akuma look waaaaay so much better than all the SFV models using the the same engine.

I still greatly prefer SFV's art style over Tekken's honestly. I think complaints about some of the backgrounds are valid (the servants in Kanzuki Estate are...pretty rough, for a lack of a better term) but I still think the models are gorgeous. I played the Friday stress-test on my new HDTV and I just love how colorful SFV is.
Same. Not very impressed with the new Tekken. Aside from the backgrounds. Those backgrounds are hot.

All the characters in SFV to me just look like resin/pvc sculptures... I guess it's mostly the hair that kills it for me. I get that it's their stylistic choice... but then why not go all out and give the game a full on illustrated look like Guilty Gear Xrd or many JRPGs are doing.
Look at what Pixar or even what Blizzard is doing with Overwatch where you can do very cartoonish and expressive characters and animation... but render hair that doesn't look like poo.

SF doesn't need to look like Tekken or vice versa. I like the character models for the most part.
I think the resin look is their goal, and they're doing a great job. I also don't think a the hair looks like bad aside from maybe two or three characters (and all blonde) maybe.

I like the look they're going for, it fits the general art style of the game with the exception of R-Mika's, it's like they went for a different art-style with her hair. Her more realistically textured hair strands really sticks out:

When they first showed this I was sure they were going to go back and refine Ryu's default hair to look this good... but I don't think that's going to happen at this point.
Yeah, I greatly prefer the graphics of SFV. That being said, I am not blown away when I hear that other people feel differently. They are both good looking games...
Though, as you have articulated, I also have a sincere problem with the character models in the background. The stages would look much better without them.

Actually yeah, can we talk about Capcom's backgrounds? I recall when we ran Alpha at our locals and I was really struck by how much better the backgrounds were than what current Capcom is putting out.
You get simple well put together backgrounds like this

This one, has interesting angles and contrast.
I think about the modern SF:IV and horribly busy and often times hideous SFxT stages, and I'm just left wondering what happened?

Seriously. Give me a spacious area with nothing but 2 guys or gals going at it. Maybe even go full Last Blade have nothing but tense ambient sounds. Hear the quiet of there being nothing for miles in any direction, nothing in this world, nothing in this moment in time, but the fight.
Part of me wants to counter the several fighting game backgrounds threads that have been made over time on GAF with a thread on which polygonal fighting game backgrounds people think are good, to see how low the standards have fallen.
The only natural and quiet looking stage in SFV...looks bad like all the rest of SFV's stages. Lowpoly geometry and a washed out look. Held back heavily in terms of it's own artistic quality of design by tech constraints and character readability concern, which is well and good for while you're playing, but no one will put this stage in an Imgur album 20 years later and say they wished they could go into this world.

They usually don't make any sense in the context of that games universe, and often they don't match the intended art style of the game.
SFV already feels like a circus ensemble, don't make it even worse please..

Capcom if you're reading this, pls take out the background characters or at least don't include them in future stages. Hell, I don't even mind the background characters. Just don't make them flail around like they're high on coke and avoid the random english band/brazilian dancers that have no business being in the stage.

That's really the thing that makes it terrible. It wouldn't be so bad if, for example, the stage started out mostly empty and gradually attracted onlookers who reacted appropriately to what was going on. Like, you know, how an actual street fight might go down. Maybe even make them excitable when and only when real shit happens, like for a Super move or something.
It's so jarring the way it is now. It's even worse in SF5 because the background NPCs animate at half the frame rate as the player characters.
I think it is a pretty good looking stage. Actually, all the stages look pretty good, the only problem is the background characters.

Because if every fighting game in a franchise had to have more characters in it (at launch) than the previous entry, things would get unmanageable very, very quickly. Eventually, you have to pare things down when reinventing things.
But you might already be aware of all this.

Not the guy you're quoting but I think anywhere from 8-16 is pretty good. If it launched with like 44 like SFIV currently has then it would take forever to learn each matchup so I'd rather they start low and expand.

Harada said that they're going to be adding more characters to Fated Retribution, so i'd think/hope that she'd finally make the roster.
I like them.
They are a fun thing in the fun video game, a fun video game that already has wild characters. They are fun, that thing fighting game are. And you don't even have to play as em. They harm bo one. They make nothing worse, you don't to pick them. They are a fun thing in the fun video game.

Screw that. Guest characters most of the time are the worst. SF has such an excellent choice of cast it would be super lame if they went with guest characters. It would maybe be fine if they chose guests from other fighting games but when it's stupid shit like Darth Vader or Ezio, that sucks. I also think MKX are making a huge mistake with all the horror characters, why not just make a horror fighting game? There's tons of MK characters they could be using.
I like them. Just not at the expense of performance when they have to run with choppy animations and 30 fps (or lower) making the game look terrible.
Something is out of whack in optimization/priorities when a fighting game background can't run at 60 fps even offline.

At least Rufus is an SF character though, in an SF game. Put SF characters in, guest characters are lame and often don't fit in with the art style at all. When there are so many cool characters already in the SF universe, it feels like a waste to use some shitty movie character or other non-FG VG character.
Sometimes it works really well like VF characters in DoA but to be fair, that's the only chance we'll see those guys in a fighting game anymore.

It's also the most simple and fair one. Look you're free to accept a minimilst roster, but some of us have higher expectations for our $60. I sure hope single player content has meat on its bones or reviewers and consumers will eat it alive.
That means nothing to me, a shit character will be shitty guest or no and so will a great one. The art style thing is subjective, and meaningless in this context considering. A bunch of tekken dudes are based on sf dudes, kof dude ect,and they were already in a game where they matched the art styles together.
That wasted slot excuse is also bullshit because, if they werent included and and someone else wasnt odds are they weren't high on the consideration ladder at the moment in the first place. There are no slots most times, that character never had a chance.
You gets no sympathy from me, don't pick them. Those characters are Problably making someone else happy. And they arent, odds are they wont be in the next game.

It's certainly simple, but not in the way you meant it.
It's also unsustainable and therefore impossible for them to do what you want.
For a serious fighting game player 16 characters potentially provides hundreds of hours of play time. The value argument becomes silly at a certain point, even if one game has fewer characters than another.
If you're going to play the game casually and you think you aren't getting your money's worth unless you have 30 characters at launch or whatever, wait for the price to drop.

That's insane. The amount of work that goes into each character and you expect minimum 44 out of the gate? How would that even be balanceable from the start? If this was the way things worked then SFV would have over 100 characters and would be total garbage. I played SFIV across 4 platformers for thousands of hours, if the game had 12 characters the whole time I would still say I got my money's worth. Your expectations/standards are way too high.

I'd be fine with a starting roster of that size as well. SFV's feels just fine to me.
I see. Harboring a construct as fleeting as a "complete game" must be hard. I feel bad for all the guys out there who cherished their complete copies of "Arcade Edition," only to have their dream dashed against the rocks by the announcement of "Ultra."

Arcade SF4 had 16 characters + 1 time-released secret character.
That's the arcade launch of SF4 you're talking about, as you know. On consoles it launched with 25. Coincidentally, MKX also launched with 25.

Most people's copies of SF4 had 25. Like I said this is going to be a big issue come February if there's really not much else content wise for casual consumers. (The audience they're designing this game for)

For sure. But we're all also aware that SFV has no arcade release, so to compare it to SF4's console release is a bit inaccurate.
You might be right about the smaller roster affecting casual sales. But I honestly don't think that many casual people are going to pass on Street Fighter because it has 16 characters as opposed to 25.
There's more to content than just character count, and as of now, it seems that there is more variety in playstyle and mechanics among SFV's 16 than among SF4's 25.
