[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

This. I don't want to see Luke fighting until the final film of this trilogy. They can't give it all away in the first film.

He should be above lightsaber fighting at this point. Like in ROTJ when Luke and Vader spend 20 minutes lightsaber fighting and the Emperor just gets up and starts electrocuting him its a "holy shit this guy is like several levels above anyone else" moment. Something like that.

I never agree with Faraci, but having read everything in these last 10 hours or so, this film has problems. I'm glad I tempered my expectations a long time ago.

You haven't seen it yet.

I wonder if some of the ambiguous storytelling is what Abrams referred to with telling a more confident story and trusting the audience to piece it together. Like not explaining why Finn hates the First Order and making the flashback Rey has be all visual.

If it's even true.

I'm perfectly fine with that. Sounds like a nice ending. This isn't Luke's movie. He will plenty of focus in the next one.

Although I think if he shows up for 1 shot and he doesn't talk that's probably better than having him say: "Shit, I knew I forgot something on Jakku... I even asked your mom if she left the gas on"

The ending sounds like the best part, but holy shit, dude is one of the best voice actors in history. Let him narrate shit, or something. It was probably harder for him to be the goddamn Trickster on The CW than to show up in the biggest movie of the year

Every film has problems.

Well, except for maybe Fury Road or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Or ALIEN.

But otherwise, all of them do.

You should probably watch it first, Ryan.

What would he narrate that the audience couldn't piece together though?

Without it sounding like an audio-log/exposition dump of course.

It's like I said late last night.

Frosty, slash film both said its a true Star Wars movie and it's really good. Not without problems but it's as good as the OT.

That's all I needed to know.

I fully expected it to have problems(would be shocked if that is because of the super quick turnaround on the script). But I still think it will be good

I wonder if, instead of being the Fury Road to A New Hope's Road Warrior, this will actually be the Last Crusade to A New Hope's Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Yes, an entire comic dedicated to Threepio's arm

Day fucking one.

Fury Road is such a high octane fuck you movie that any perceived problems it could have just fly by

Also where Donnie at, tho

The podracing sequence. Or the audiobook :p

Well shit, I still hope that pastebin isn't real but it's becoming clear that it is.
Still don't like that his real name is Ben
(Yes I've seen ANH and Han thinks he's a weird old geezer that believes in this space magic bullshit,
Leia only sends him a message because she knows of him because her father told her stories, still seems weird to name your kids after him IMO).
But it's not a dealbreaker for me. Also only having Luke show up at the last minute is nothing new, so not bothersome either.
The only thing that seems weird is that Kylo is supposedly losing an arm....

If the Kylo = Ben thing is real then they really did just swap around things from the old Expanded Universe.

In the books Ben was Luke's son, lol.

Is the review embargo ending today? Or is it tomorrow?

Tomorrow, not sure what time though. Only really interested to read the reviews to see if the writers had time to write rather than the twitter reaction stuff.

Interstellar had potential.

That it did. I don't really mind if certain parts are thematically similar to the OT, it's the sequel to movies from 30 years ago, it can be excused from that. What wouldn't be excused, imo, is if entire new trilogy did that. TFA is the hand off, Ep VIII + IX are the fulfillment.

I hope you're fuckin happy, Fine Ham Abounds

That dude's always happy, man!

Unshackled by the restraints of propriety and good taste. All he cares for is the finest of ham, and that it stays plentiful.

I envy him.

Tomorrow, not sure what time though.

Midnight tonight, specifically. Meaning if you WANTED, you could stay up til 3am on the East Coast to see what critics you almost never pay attention to thought of the film as their outlets make them live, but you might as well just wait until tomorrow morning, when they'll actually be shared to a significant degree.

But tomorrow morning, the critical deluge begins.

True, it's not like I wouldn't like to hear him talk.
Things is this way it's probably a better "tease" for the next movie.
That one final shot of Luke in his Jedi robes and the Obi-Wan beard...

Just hope it's not the earlier shitty rumor of having him up to his neck in sand and opening his eyes (can't even remember where that rumor came from)

I fail to see what problems Mulholland Dr. or more importantly RAN have, but that's just me.

That being said, yeah, you bring up an excellent point: practically every film ever has problems.

Quick question, were details or anything substantial ever released from the Michael Arndt draft?

Not yet. I'm betting if JW Rinzler releases a "Making of The Force Awakens" book, that's where we'll see his contributions as well as maybe some of those Lucas Notes we've heard so much about.

But otherwise, we basically have the Mizzlewump outline of the 2nd draft, and the knowledge that Abrams was responsible for maintaining details and story beats that Arndt had landed on during development.

It was some concept art from the Art Of book.

Thanks, lots of spoilers/rumors these last few days, hard to remember where some of 'em came from and really thought this one came out of the collective "rumors-from-the-internet's-ass"
Guess I can't dismiss it so easily then, even if it was just "concept art".

Though I feel that would be really weird just showing him opening his eyes and that's all we're seeing of him.

Most people wouldn't know anyway, so even though it's funny/lazy(or a coincidence) it shouldn't be a problem....

Every single Star Wars movie has problems and I've always have some fairly mayor problems with the OT, so even is far from perfect, but I'm still able to enjoy them

Anyways, I'm watching this movie expecting it to be the weakest of the new trilogy and the best thing about it is that each movie has a different director, which is something that did help the OT

Cool, thanks. A "making of" book would be great. Hopefully the script leaks someday, I'm a sucker for unproduced screenplays of films that were changed during production ala Prometheus or Day of the Dead. I'd bet that the lid on a leak for a Star Wars script is sealed pretty tight though.

I can't think of a film that is without fault. Even Raiders, as Bobby referenced, has a massive plot flaw.

It was never going to be perfect. I'm just as hyped as I was a year ago, two years ago etc. I just want more Star Wars.

As long as the call-backs aren't eye-rolling, I'll be happy with that.

Whilst I'm preparing for it, I don't think I'm ready for the constant bashing the film will get for being too similar to ANH or the OT in general.

This film is all about reigniting the fire for the OT generation, the PT generation and bringing the saga to a new generation entirely. It's job is to pass the baton, and I don't think it's possible to accomplish that without the use of heavy call-backs and similar plot beats. Hell, as we discussed previously, ANH is basic storytelling 101, so unless you got Tarantino in to do a Pulp Fiction job, it's never going to anything other than real basic story telling. It's all about the characters, the world and the emotion. Until we see that for ourselves, we can't really judge where the film sits. Anyone expecting this to reinvent the wheel was going to be disappointed no matter what.

A little over 32 hours now...

It's just coincidence. It' s not like anyone working on the films even knows those books ever existed.

Has Harloff commented on people from the premiere confirming that Snoke basically looks like the art book image and not the fan art of Plagueis?

This guy at reddit is answering questions after seeing it last night.

Unfortunately no indication as to why he turned other than he was lured by Snoke. It's danced around, they don't mention specifics. He's obsessed with being stronger than Vader and when Rey says that to him (as she's being held captive) he smacks her. Also later in the movie Rey gives Kylo a scar across his face from chin to forehead during their battle in the snow. At the end of the battle the ground caves in and they're separated... that's when Rey runs back to Finn. That's the last time we see Kylo in TFA.

No mention of the supposed seperation of his limb/arm.

After the crawl is a planet and a huge star destroyer moving across it at a cool angle. The last shot is Rey looking at Luke Skywalker, who sports his mechanical hand (skin free) and puts it under his chin. Then it cuts to a wide shot of the two of them in front of what appears to be Jedi ruins.

Sounds like a pretty awesome ending.

When you see a movie that opens with "Luke Skywalker has disappeared" and the entire movie is about finding Luke.... Every character.... Poe, Finn (as Rey's sidekick), Rey, Han, Leia, Snoke, Ren, everyone wants to find Luke. The New Order wants to blow up planets AND find Luke. You create a want in the audience, he's the mcguffin, the driving force.
Instead of getting us to the central point of the movie (what happened to Luke?), we get a copy paste of a previous plot used twice now in the series and at the end of the movie we reach Luke (the driving force behind the story) and it ends. You're allowed to think that's no surprise, I'm allowed to think its incredibly unsatisfying.
Indiana Jones reaches the Ark of the Covenant and... movie ends.
Guy @ Reddit Also a full review above the quote I pasted

I am genuinely curious to see if this ends up being an issue for me.

As far as I can see the film succeeds in the search for Luke. He's the MacGuffin and at the end he's found, closing the loop that is started in the opening crawl.

Gibb seems to suggest that the film doesn't succeed. I won't know until I see it, of course.

Edit: Actually the Saber is more the MacGuffin than Luke himself. But they are part of the same quest.
