I dislike everything JJ. The writing is always bad (opinion). I'm sure he will make the film a visual delight, but I had hoped that Kasdan co-writing would offset JJ's bad writing and plot direction. Directors usually have a lot of input in script revision though...

You realize JJ didn't touch the script for the Star Trek movies, right?

That was my biggest concern after following the early script leaks. It's not just a fetch quest, the fetch quest is given to this character who is, coincidentally, super force-sensitive and the brother of the princess, and the son of the villain. Clearly the FOrce leads R2-D2 to stumble into him and begin his ascension blah blah blah garbage.

Like i said- complete retread of ANH, which is not in the same league as ESB.

You are speaking past tense as if you have seen it and it's in the past now.

What the fuck? you are speaking in past tense like someone who has seen the movie. What in the world are you basing your already locked opinion on? We haven't even had a single review let alone you even seeing it.

You are acting crazy man

Let the hate flow through you.

I can't believe people are knocking films using video game terminology like it's applicable at all.

Lots of fiction has the protagonist tasked with delivering something.

It's not like the term mcguffin is often used or something. Literally 1/2 the marvel cinematic universe is a fight for an object.

In a scene that Abram cut, Spock explains that (the encounter of Kirk and Spock Prime) is a result of the universe trying to restore balance after the time line is changed. They acknowledged the coincidence as a function of the universe to heal itself.

It's not great transition writing, but at least the writers acknowledged it.

Abrams didn't. He said he cut that scene because he liked the mystery the chance meeting provided.

What's funny about that is that it's the exact same logic that is used in LOST - the universe course correcting itself.

I didn't mind it in LOST but disliked it in Trek. It wasn't an egregious reveal (in a cut scene) though.

Citizen Kane isn't even Orson Welles' best film. That's either Chimes at Midnight or Touch of Evil.

However I'm loving the way Han's death sounds in the pastebin leak. Brutal stuff from Ben Solo.

I am basing my opinion of the PLOT based on what we know of the script (pretty much every beat) and there is someone on reddit who posted proof they saw the movie and is answering every question asked. Everything posted about the script and the 'reviews' coincides with JJ direction:

shiny but no substance.

I'm sure the later sequels will pickup on all the unanswered questions and make this trilogy its own thing, but I was voicing concern that this movie is an ANH script retread with the same problems.

Right, And that is fair. but automatically ASSUMING that the movie is going be shit based off of one bad review, is stretching.

Because if your convinced its bad, when you see it, it will automatically be bad.

that pastebin.

if it's accurate why would the people who made starkiller repeat the same weakness that the first death star had? utterly stupid.

I love how people are complaining about dumb coincidences like the Falcon happens to be picked up by Han in his new freighter. These kinds of coincidences are crazy common in fantasy movies/books. I understand that people dislike the whole Spock in the cave thing, but it's not really different from anything else.

R2D2 happens to be purchased by Luke Skywalker, son of Anakin Skywalker and gets involved in the story? That's ridiculous. ANH is crap.

Luke crash-lands on Dagobah and happens to run into Yoda just a few feet away? ESB is crap.

Bilbo goes on an adventure and happens to find the One Ring in a random cave? Tolkien is a hack.

Lol, the reactions to the reactions here so far are like clock work. We even have our first "Fuck JJ Abrams" in the thread.

Films seems to be good, with issues obviously. But we who read spoilers are here because we love to play with our own expectations and test them, so right now I'm modifying my expectations so I can enjoy the movie. I don't mean lowering them, but enjoy the film for what it is instead of having misplaced expectations, like believing Luke is in half the movie or something or that Finn is really the star.

They wanted to add a cool callback to Ep. IV so they put the weakness in the exact same place! Sure, the rebels will know about it but think about the callback!

Kinda want to phone my local Wal-Mart and see if they'll sell the soundtrack yet if it's in stock.

Also, I wonder if Kylo will try to go after Leia in Episode VIII or if she'll have a showdown with him and put him in his place.

First Order Engineer's doing god's work. Although the idea of some part of the Death Planet being the weak-point...somehow remains more interesting to me as opposed to both sides just metaphorically punching each other until someone falls down. If it's defended somewhat it'll be a step up. But if Snoke has bigger superweapons waiting for Ep VIII/IX he could really do without it having a small undefended weak point.

That said maybe the First Order didn't expect General Leia to be willing to blow up an entire planet. Don't fuck with Leia Organa. Lesson learned. maybe.

Edit: for what it's worth I have not seen Citizen Kane. I have no idea how this started.

The ambiguous nature of some of the plot points, and lack of explaining everything is rather nice. It harkens back to the OT in the best way: that feeling of you just dropping into a universe that has existed before you, and will exist after you.

Part of the fun of watching the original OT is not knowing the particulars, and engaging your gray matter to come up with explanations for the weird, exotic, rugged universe you're only seeing a small snippet of. One of the issues with the prequels is not just tha it tried to explain EVERYTHING, but it tried to give us a galaxy wide view of a conflict that should have stayed laser focused on two characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker (listed in order of primary importance from episode 1-3).

Besides, from a business standpoint, Disney is going to be mining that 30 year gap for years and years to come. Toys, movies, video games, comic books, cartoons, and probably live action tv series. They didn't drop billions for Lucasfilm for nothing. They expect to make that money back tenfold.

Leaving questions unanswered in this first installment is good business, and, to the benefit of the viewer, good storytelling. Not every business decision has to be onesided in favor of the huge corporation. Sometimes the consumers get something too.

On another note. Anyone expecting this movie to be cinematic perfection is just inviting disappointment. Even the best films have issues. Questionable dialogue, plot contrivances, resolutions, acting, etc. films are huge productions, a LOT of hands go into the pot when you're creating a film (or a video game). Even developers and filmmakers who have cultivated a well oiled machine of a production process will still fall to the weaknesses of being a human being.

I'll be satisfied if the movie is entertaining. If I leave the theater feeling like I felt after seeing Fury Road or Creed, shit, that'd be great. It wasn't until later reflection that I considered the film's to be my two faves of the year so far. At the time I left the theater, I was just glowing from the experience of having seen a movie that delighted me, and triggered various emotions in me while watching it. I'll probably give a kneejerk impressions post of the movie when I see it Sunday, but I won't write my review until I've sat on it for a few days. I still have to write my Creed and Fury Road reviews, actually (REALLY behind on Fury Road).
