I could probably name hundreds of movies where "coincidences" like in this movie or the Spock thing drive plots along. JJ Abrams doesn't have a monopoly on them. Get over yourself.

Well, he shamelessly pilfered from the older Star Trek movies ("How about we just ram two more Starfleet ships into another giant, unbeatable Romulan ship?"). Wouldn't be crazy to think he'd do the same here.

Well, the movie sounds awesome to me. But then again I like the prequels so I guess my standards are low according to internet/critics.
I like what I like, and I love Star Wars.

There are some plot point decisions that make me question what JJ and Kasdan were thinking in lifting those things verbatim from previous SW movies.
Did those story elements really mean so much to them and were they so crucial to the film that they couldn't be removed? Surely, they could have seen how a portion of the audience is going to react to the constant allusions, right?
I'll wait to see how it is in execution, of course, but I haven't liked the sound of the Starkiller from the start.

Yeah that guy on Reddit wasnt a fan of the movie. Probably because it takes too much from ANH and such. I am okay with that as this is really for a younger generation.
Looks like we will find out more about The Knights of Ren till VIII and IX which i am okay with. Dont put all your cards into 1 movie.

There is a difference between each of your examples.
This suspension of disbelief comes easier because of the star wars mythos (compared to star trek). We have a ubiquitous 'force' that may link those sensitive to it in the universe. Luke is sensitive to it, Obi lives near him as he knew his father and what Luke may be capable of, and we have a droid who's been handled by his sister - another force sensitive. I don't like the coincidence of the droid finding its way to Luke on a desert planet, but there is a difference between this coincidence and star trek where suspension of disbelief comes easier here.
The main gripe I have is that the new movie retreads this ground (and the plot beats) of ANH, because it makes writing easier. Major coincidences are lazy writing. Consider the 'Meereenese knot' in Game of Thrones which doesn't rely on coincidences for characters to meet one another, other issues with it notwithstanding.
This is not a comparable 'suspension of belief' moment to ANH. We have a 'force master', a 'force ghost' and a 'force sensitive'. We are lead to believe that the meeting of Yoda on Dabogah is not a result of chance.
He found a magical ring in The Hobbit. We know nothing about this ring in that book. There is nothing special about Bilbo - it could have been found by anyone which would have potentially been a catalyst for The Fellowship of the Ring. There's no suspension of disbelief here...he is no 'son of Sauron' etc...
Anyway - that is just to offer some perspective because I seem to have riled up people who don't understand where I'm coming from.

I don't understand how a large superweapon or base couldn't have some weakness. However, it's not like the trench run would be a complete rehash. The Order probably did account for it, but Han, Chewie, and Finn have to infiltrate the base to create a weakness. Don't they have to shut down the base's shields or something?
I am halfway expecting him to say "Well they didn't disprove anything" so I'm still right.

Isn't it universally agreed that prequels focus on explanations and exposition hurt a lot of the ambiguity and mystery of Star Wars?

Seriously though, this reeks of intellectualization to me. Sounds a lot more like, "I'm okay with those coincidences because I like those movies/plots." I haven't seen the movie though so I am a bit at a disadvantage. It very well could be handled really poorly.
A lot of the guys on reddit have known the plot for months and so want EVERY single thing explained. Which is never going to happen.

I didn't even read the review, that's just their opinion. No one is freaking out...
The person answers a bunch of questions- basically everything that happens in the movie and any lingering questions we still had from the leaked beats.
That's why I am so excited for his movie. I think he could do thing's with Star Wars that hasn't been done before.
I know I will probably love J.J.'s movie, but Rian... I think he will do something awesome. Especially with Rey being trained as a Jedi.

Again, I haven't seen the movie and will await my opinion but...
Is it crazy to imagine that 30 years later a brainwashed Empire fanboy who wants to "make the galaxy great again" tries to copycat them? It's like a copycat murderer who has a lot more power.
We have a guy who is literally talking to Darth Vader's helmet, he wants the old Skywalker lightsaber - why would he not also try to create and use a super weapon as well? He wants to be Darth Vader 2.0.
The interesting part to me, is that this is all seemingly shutdown within this movie. Which leaves us in an interesting place for the next movie. What will fanboy do now that he is confronted with the possibility that he is not "Vader 2.0?" What will he discover was a lie or misinformation about the previous Empire?

JJ has said at multiple times during press interviews when asked about midichlorians that he'd like to think of The Force as something that anyone could tap into if they worked at it. I suspect they're planting the seeds for more than just Rey to become a Jedi.
