Well, I just got back from a screening. I'm not sure what to make of it to be honest, I'm going to need another viewing or two before making my mind up on it fully. I just thought they could've handled some story moments a bit better in it. They revealed Kylo's heritage far too early in the film I thought, and it was revealed/delivered extremely casually.


Also, for people who have seen it, were you disappointed with the score in any way? I found it to be really ordinary overall, except for when it would revisit some of the original themes.

Because he's the Master. He's obviously powerful, and is the one who trained Ben in the Dark Side.

Ive listended to the soundtrack. And it really lacks some kind of track that is like duel of the fates or imperial march.

The story had been finished the galaxy should have been saved for hundreds mabye thousands of years. Not just 30 years.

During the film it just seems so ordinary and out of place, there's some really nice moments here and there but I never thought I'd see the day where I called a John William's score ordinary.

It's much more understated than the prequel scores, that's for sure. I kind of like that about it. It also has a sense of "whimsy" to the music that I didn't expect. Rey's theme in particular reminds me of his work on Harry Potter without sounding like a ripoff.

I feel like "March of the Resistance" and "Scherzo for X-Wings" is very much in line with the original trilogy in terms of stand out tracks but I agree that there is no one "Duel of the Fates" standout here.

I'd love it if he was actually a tiny, frail, cowardly little worm who was able to use the Dark Side/sorcerer's tricks to cloud minds and make himself seem bigger and more powerful than he is. Then OP Grandmaster Luke shows up and rips away the facade.

I could see a lot of people being disappointed in a Snoke that's a huge wimp, though.

World War 2 went on for months after Hitler died. It's ridiculous to think that the galaxy was instantly safe simply because the Emperor was killed. Especially when we're talking about a galaxy-wide empire. It's like the fall of the Roman empire x lightyears

And going by the plot summary, the First Order is relatively recently in the timeline. Sounds like there was relative peace for a few decades, and even now the conflict is relatively small scale - an smaller Resistance against a smaller First Order
 
Can someone that has seen the movie confirm the fate of Captain Phasma?

Sounding like she dies, what a fucking mess if true.

I don't even need to have seen the movie to tell you this isn't true. Kathleen Kennedy said in an interview that they had big plans for her in Episode VIII.

I would love to see him huge, he is very intriguing, menacing and godlike in his posture. Man, I am sure Luke had some background story with him at some point. So much exciting stuff that I am sure they'll deal with in EP8 or/and in some novels that will soon come out.
 
Just saw it. Enjoyed it a lot. They channeled a lot from the original trilogy, which is perfectly fine to me.

Only wish it was longer and give more time to the Resistance heading towards the charging planet.

Bits with Kylo Ren were really good. He showed a lot of weaknesses which was nice, but I'm sure he'll grow more evil.

Wanted more from Phasma tbh. Felt like Boba Fett - cool, but quickly discarded.

I was a bit unclear about Rey's flashback. Need clarification about her past.

Also, Malboros and tentacles :)

It's kind of the same situation as the Adventures of Tintin score, which I am a broken record about. Everyone expected it to have a big bombastic theme like the Indiana Jones theme, but there was no Indiana Jones theme. Instead, there were piece of music that evoked Chaplin comedy and French film, and a couple big battle pieces. This hugely disappointed people, but taken on its own merits, it's an amazing soundtrack. I'm guessing the TFA OST is similar.

Yeah, Snoke could be a lot more menacing than the Emperor, who was more of a fun villain than a scary one. It could go in any direction. That's what's great about it. I'm glad Episode VII maintains a sense of mystery in the universe.

no mind tricks needed, it could be just a wrongly calibrated holoprojector.
it was probably Finn's job to calibrate it before he deserted.

I saw it earlier this morning and I've now had some time to digest it.

Overall it was a nice film. I wasn't overwhelmed but it was definitely not disappointing. Many of the story pieces felt quite rushed and the pacing seemed a bit off. Some of the scenography was amazing though.

At the end though, it felt very much like a set up for the other episodes. A simple introduction of the new characters. It did leave me excited for things to come though.

Also rip Han.

Get off my page. I have the exact feelings towards the movie and forgettable score.
 
I have questions after watching the movie an hour ago:

1. Who is Snoke, where did he come from?

2. Any hints on Rey's backstory? Is she related to Luke somehow?

3. Is there any media that fills the gap between episodes 6 and 7? The whole Luke training Jedi and Ren going bad bit in particular?
 
I can't help but wonder if Han Solo's death was planned from day one or if Harrison Ford told 'em "Okay I'll be in your new Star Wars movie, but I'm only doing one."
 
Truth: If Finn isn't Force sensitive, which looks to be the case, then it's pretty badass that he was able to hold his own with Kylo Ren for a bit and even put a hit down on that motherfucker.
