For those that've seen it, on a scale of Stepin Fetchit to Sidney Poitier - what would you rate the character of Finn?

You know the part in Plinkett's Phantom Menace takedown where he asks people to describe SW characters without talking about looks, jobs, powers or clothes, and no one can say anything about Prequel characters. There's tons you could say bout Finn.

Finn is inexperienced. He's scared so he hides it with wisecracks but when the chips are down he won't back away. He's highly moral. He's loyal. Impulsive, likes to improvise. Won't back down against opponents he can't win against even if he's scared. He's a great everyman hero, not a 'jobber' like someone here said. He's poised to become the next Han, the Reluctant General, when he grows up in the next two movies. It's weird that some people seem to be so disappointed with him.

I'm a bit frustrated; someone over at TFN saw the film early and is somehow still convinced that Rey is Han and Leia's daughter, because "they never say they didn't have a daughter in the film."

The general consensus here is that Rey is either Luke's daughter or she's Random, right?

Yeah, with the 1% chance there's some left field twist. Like she's a Kenobi or something.

Some Kylo versus Rey - Gone

Shit quality, 20 seconds, can barely see anything. Do get a glimpse at how some of the strikes are though.

Edit : I also like that she looks so diminutive against him. I'm assuming this is before she Hulks up.

Edit 2 : Gone.

For people who've seen the movie, is the climax of The Jedi Steps (where Rey meets Luke) rushed in the movie as much as it sounds on the soundtrack?
Not really.

Because that scene is more like a teaser. The film had essentially ended a few minutes earlier. It's a short and sweet set up of the next film.

I wonder, could Phasma end up being Finn's Vader in a sense like Kylo will end up being for Rey? Vader wasn't too prominent in the first movie compared to his role in the next two.

Haven't seen it yet and won't be able to until next week maybe but based on the discussion regarding her role seeming small I wondered if that could be the case.

Ah, she becomes a bigger villain due to a petty act... heh.

Rey is a Skywalker, no?

I mean, the saga is about Skywalkers... yet Finn and Poe certainly aren't Skywalkers. Kylo Ren is a Skywalker but he is the villain so i think he doesn't count as the main Skywalker.
This leaves Rey.

And stuff in the film really hint at her being one. She's drawn to Anakin's lightsaber, she has a Force vision, she is a natural Force user (or has repressed memories about using the Force). Heck, the title of the film refers to her really. (Her Force abilities can be explained with her being a Skywalker who are traditionally strong in the Force.)

Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me. The only reason they wouldn't do it I think is because it would be too obvious, but if this movie is anything to go on then that's not something they're concerned about lol.

It was most reminiscent of the RotJ fight for me, but I didn't think the way the fight was shot or edited was all that great. I'll have to watch it again though.

Regarding the Rey/Kylo fight. When he starts fighting Finn he's already wounded by Chewie. By the time Rey fights him he's further wounded by Finn. He's still very much the stronger person in the fight with Rey even while he's wounded. Only when Rey meditates and probably sees a boy that just murdered his father she beats him.

Exactly my thoughts; A more practical substitute for a post-credits scene. (As in, all people will actually see it. We were probably 2% of the cinema waiting for something after the credits.)

I find the movie to be a mash up of new hope and empire in its beats.

This is, I find it difficult to discern whether it's deliberately riding the fine lines between homage, parallels and just plain ripping off.

But the reality is it's very much an Abrams film. When stuff works it's brilliant, like there is a moment just after the MF crashlands on Starkiller base where Han/Finn and Chewie talk through the plan. Han finds out that Finn was a janitor there and gets worries about the plan. Then Finn goes; "we'll use the force" and Han: "That's not how it works" and the delivery there from both of them is fucking perfect.

Other times Abrams just goes overboard with references, not to the extend of Into Darkness, but referencing for the sale of referencing.

Just out of the movie, which was mildly disappointing, even knowing what to expect.

But the biggest disappointment is the soundtrack, which is, completely forgettable. I have the album on pre-order, can't wait to listen to it properly but man...

After trying to piece everything together... I think I figured it all out.

Rey isn't Luke's daughter.

Rey is a female clone of Anakin.

The actual air battle at the end was kinda bad I thought. They should've either made it a larger part or shown less of it. Even though they put in the time to make a character out of one of the pilots it felt underdeveloped. It wasn't climactic at all and the pacing of the battle vs the confrontations with Kylo (?) didn't jive.

Assuming JJ wants us to invest in Kylo as much as Rey, dude needed to take a hard L. The way it plays out was plausible.

did you guys applaud after?

I was at a half-filled 13:00 showing, and there was just thunderous applause at all relevant moments, including after. Really nice movie party, would probably go again purely for that.

Kylo beating his chest during the final fight was pretty cool. Don't know what it meant though.

Yes this chest-beating thing occurred several times. It was just sort of a showcase of general aggression, I guess?

They both play two gang members early on in the film.
Huh. So that baton trooper wasn't Iko?
The wide-leg/bent-knee stance and baton fighting looked similar IMO

My thoughts are, that the movie is really great, but that it feels more like a standalone Scifi with star wars characters and starwars references than a Star Wars movie.

Also on the music side the movie seems to lack a proper new theme. The new order doesn't leave an impression as great as the Empire did without a theme like the imperial march. It doesn't sound so starwars-y either exept from the reused themes and that's a shame when the movie itself feels different than usual due to new direction.

Wasn't he beating his wounded side?

I figure he was either doing it for confidence, for showyness, or if he did beat his side like i thought, to focus himself through pain.
