[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens - It's True. All of it.

I feel like 8 will be about Luke and Rey tracking down Kylo and showing him how Vader turned to the light in the end.

Naw I think rey will be getting trained and finn will be on a self-discovery journey, where he may find his place in the galaxy or (still have hope for) may find out he does have the force within.

I think he will wake up off-screen with some comics or books tieins

Cool down. We have lots of people entering this thread for the first time who have avoided the spoilers we've absorbed for the last year.

Thanks for cooling me down. My eyes were filled with Ben Carson like rage that you keenly picked up from my text on your screen.

I just saw the movie but I don't understand one thing: Is Rey Luke's daughter or a new family/background story?

We don't know who Rey's parents are. It was intentionally left open ended.

Fans of Rey will tell you Luke is definitely her dad because their body tingled during the Luke scene.

You know, that people keep asking it, makes me think it should have been explained in the film.

With the original Star Wars, things were simple. An evil empire, good rebels. It is simple setting, quickly established.

But for those who have watched the original Star Wars films, TFA doesn't have such clarity. The evil empire was defeated in the ROTJ, wasn't it? So who are these wannabe empire guys?

A film can leave questions but they should not be about the background. That's the wrong direction.
They definitely should have added some scenes in the galactic senate that detailed the political landscape and what the trade federation has been up to and so forth and so on.

it's ironic that the OT is called "A new Hope".

It did re-use plenty of motives, mostly from ep IV (The "nobody" on a desert planet that stumbles into a great adventure by meeting a droid that holds secret plans.
The mentor (who dies at the end)
but also many of V (the father-son on the narrow bridge scene), some of VI (a bunker powering a shield that Han and Chewie go to blow up). Kinda derivative, but i don't consider that a bad thing. A new hope is almost 40 years old - can't blame em for making a Star Wars-ass Star Wars movie.

What happened in the film explained (do we even have to spoilertag in here?)
why Ford was so active in pre-release marketing. Dude was old and tired. It's a good thing he was the one to go, because the character of Han Solo just doesn't age well. A resistance general and a jedi master can be 100 years old, for all i care, but a rogueish smuggler granpa, that don't work.

a few random further remarks / questions:

* Whoa, Coruscant!
* PLEASE don't let Rey be Luke's daughter or some shit like that. Not everyone has to be part of the fucking Skywalker dynasty. Stop making force sensitivity so damn hereditary. Genetics and Micro-organisms (Midi-you-know-what) aren't that far apart from one another.
* Rey is such a fantastic character. That 'Why do you keep grabbing my hands' moment. Fan-fucking-tastic. I'm afraid they're giving her too many abilities right now, though.
She's the farm-boy, the Jedi, the tinkerer / engineering wiz, a great pilot, - and a girl. She's basically Han, Chewie, Luke and Leia combined :P
* What was Max von Sydow's character. The opening crawl called him a "former ally" or something of Leia. Are we meant to know him?
* I was so relieved when the big-bad was just a hologram and not some huge ass cgi dude (like Thanos). It's actually pretty smart to - even if you're regular sized - project yourself to be super big, so everyone, even Gwendolyn Christie, has to look up to you.

Coruscant was not in this movie

And Max played Lor San Tekka
Wasn't that Coruscant they blew up with their first salvo? It looked like an urban planet and they meant to wipe out the republic / senate.

Wasn't that what General Hitler Hux' speech was about?

and yeah, i read the credits, too. Who's that?

Didn't find sign for 3 movies?

I think you meant to say "Finn"?

Regardless, right now, I'd imagine that Rey and Finn are both probably locks for all 3. Likely Kylo and Poe as well (Although, I imagine that either would be slightly more likely to have a shock death in the second)

Since we are partially on the subject, I'm just wondering, anyone have any clue as to what people were paid for this? Wonder if they got those rumored early marvel type deals, or something better.

I cannot decide if this was a remake or a sequel. Felt like both. I liked it but it was so derivative...and lacked punch. I just watched Episode 3 earlier today, and as much as people hate it (and I hate some of its writing), it had several scenes that really hit hard (order 66 of course).
In the new movie, nothing hits hard. Not even the hardest hit of all
Solo..
. I don't know why. But damn what a shame. I suppose it is precisely because it feels so safe and derivative.

I guess what really pissed me off about it is that it made it seem like the big victory in ROTJ was completely irrelevant. Jedi still nowhere, basically urban legends (WTF?), Empire still alive and kicking under a different name...just weird.

Man reading predictions based on trailer now is so funny. They did good job to mislead viewers with them :D

Only thing that is big minus for me is that there weren't epic saber fights. Humor was great, characters were great, visuals were great, space battles were good, story was OK we will see where it will lead.

Also here at my place atmosphere in the theatre was amazing (around 300 people and no kids).

Metal Gear Solid 2 was a
Solid Snake Simulation
, and it was still a great game. This is kindasorta a Luke Skywalker Simulation. ;)

Can you go into detail?

i liked that she immediately dismantled the 'dude takes girl by the hand to lead the way' thing by telling him she could run just fine without him grabbing her hand. She's very self-empowered and has the most agency of every characters in the movie.

Just came back from the midnight screening and man, this was a huge letdown.

I'm sure I'm not the first one but this gif sumarizes the movie best I guess:

pIvKZxD.gif

- Again a droid that miraculously stumbles accross some mighty "the force is strong in him/her" at the start? Really?
- And talking about Rey, who the hell is she anyway? Why is she better in flying and fixing the Falcon than Solo? Better than Kylo with the light sabre and stronger with the force? Who wrote this script? Lindelof?
- AGAIN a death star.... oh... sorry, a star killer.... Geezus, I went like "really?" when I saw it the first time. Wasn't two times enough?
- AGAIN almost the exact same weekness? Didn't they learn squat?

The more I think about everything, the more disappointed I am. Especially with the lacking exposition. I was waiting the whole time for an explanation on why Kylo turned to the dark side or why Rey is a genious with everything she does, but nothing was given. How does no one seem to care about this here? Wasn't this why movies like Prometheus were talked down? I don't get it. I mean, I know there are two more episodes coming but come on.... This was pretty shallow.

I some of this explained in the new books or what?

No need to be snide. A quick, simple explanation given somewhere, perhaps in the opening scroll.

Hosnian Prime, the new capital.

And Lor San Tekka is a Jakku villager who was around during the clone wars who is in a church dedicated to worshipping the ways of the force.

Wait for the sequels
lol

I was just SO disappointed when i saw Kylo Ren's face, seriously... Awful, awful casting choice for me, it completely killed the appeal of the character as far as i'm concerned.
He instantly went from menacing and pretty cool to someone so underwhelming and irrelevant it hurts.
I was honestly really, really annoyed by that.

The rest of the movie was ok: i liked it but definitely did not loved it.

When they announce something as a trilogy, you should absolutely expect to have to wait for answers.

Were you expecting to see Smaug die in the first Hobbit movie?

The new characters s interesting enough to make up for most of this imo

Hosnian Prime, the new capital.

kk thanks

They blew up Hosnian Prime the capital of the new republic.

And Lor San Tekka is a Jakku villager who was around during the clone wars who is in a church dedicated to worshipping the ways of the force.

kk thanks.

Seeing how she has been making a living for years by dismantling starships and she lived in an ATAT, i figure she could be quite handy.
She's not better at flying the Falcon than Solo, dude exited a hangar and landed on a planet via lightspeed.

Just got out of the screening.

I get the feeling that, if you totally ignore A New Hope, this movie is outstanding.

Actually, if you were to say this wasn't a Star Wars movie, removed the cameos and callbacks and this was its own thing, it'd be movie of the decade material.

The problem is that about 80% of A New Hope happens in this movie, and the original awesome stuff (I.e. the new characters being all new and interesting) is sidelined for the retreads.

Well, she did some fucking crazy flying at the beginning... Did you hear what she answered when Finn asked her how she did it: I don't know.

World class exposition.... What the fuck man?

WHAT

Best sabre fight in 30 years..
- And talking about Rey, who the hell is she anyway? Why is she better in flying and fixing the Falcon than Solo? Better than Kylo with the light sabre and stronger with the force? Who wrote this script? Lindelof?
She wasn't better at flying the falcon or better than kylo with the lightsabre. But why couldn't she naturally be stronger with the force than kylo? Or, as a young person, be better at technical gadgets than grandpa Solo?

No need to be snide. A quick, simple explanation given somewhere, perhaps in the opening scroll.
I just thought the political landscape was pretty self-explanatory and one of the best decisions they made with this movie was keeping the politics to a minimum and focus on what is actually good about the SW universe.

"GOD they talk about the dragon this, the dragon that. And you never even see the dragon!!"

I really feel that they should have explained the motives of The First Order, the Resistance and how they relate to the New Republic. Also some more info on the planets that just got destroyed (along with millions/billions of people?)

What are The First Order fighting for? The emperor was killed, the 'empire' is over. Why not just join the New Republic and democracy? I don't understand what they want. Kylo calls Rey and other 'Resistance' fighters "traitors" and talks about finishing what Vader started. But what did Vader start? He was a lap dog for the emperor, nothing more.

And it was super confusing as to why there was a Resistance in the first place when there was already a New Republic. Did I miss the part that explained that in the film?

I loved the film but the movie was too starved of info and motivations.

Hobbit is a triology, based on a book, because of that the stretching was the most common complaint. Furthermore, him being dead is a followup, a conclusion, not the answer to a question. Questions would be who he is, where he comes from and how he ended up in the mountain. All answered right at the beginning.

Returned from a midnight screening. I really enjoyed it! Maybe the villain was the only setback but it was mostly a minor one. Wished Leia had more to do as well but I'm holding out hope for future movies. Rey was a really awesome character and I was surprised with how reactive Finn was to everything that happened, but it worked. I was happy to see that Ford wasn't just acting for a paycheck and actually seemed to put effort into playing Han again.

Just back from the midnight showing in the uk

Absolutely loved it, and I can say that truthfully without the hype machine being a factor

Poe is my fuckin boy. Goddamn I love Oscar Issac

i think that's fully intentional.
A New Hope made us love Star Wars.

This is not a progression of the 70s / 80s Star Wars series of films. It's a continuation of the franchise, and this film tries to give the generation who haven't grown up with Star Wars movies their "A New Hope" moment.

Many, many viewers of TFA don't know ANH by heart and won't see TFA for as entirely derivative as it is. They never set out to exlusively please those people who were already Star Wars fans. Making it very ANH-ish is mostly a business move, i guess. You'll be doing yourself a favour if you cut ties (like they did with
Han
)to the original trilogy - it'll increase your enjoyment of the new movies, i think.

That doesn't explain anything. Luke had been well trained in the OT and didn't just do everything naturally like Rey is doing.

Luke shot womp rats, goes on to perfectly pilot an X-Wing and shoot torpedoes better than a targeting computer.
Rey dismantles starship wrecks, goes on to be handy with tools and starships.

i have no issues believing she's also fast to pick up piloting skills and has fast reflexes.

Why does Rey have to have an "explanation", or rather "justification" for everything she does. How come Finn doesn't cut his arm off with the light saber immediately? How come Finn knows how to perform first Aid on a Wookie. How come Rey speaks Astromech-droid.

A lot of the questions people seem to be asking are the same as ANH. Wait for the goddamn sequels. It still works as a standalone movie just fine

That doesn't explain anything. Luke had been well trained in the OT and didn't just do everything naturally like Rey is doing.

He made a miraculous proton torpedo shot without a targeting computer in seemingly his first time flying an X Wing.

People who are force sensitive have better reflexes.

Find it hilarious the First Order created yet another Death Star when the consensus by the remaining Imperial leaders in the current canon books is that even the first was a mistake.

it just hit me, all that talk about possible romantic reads for episode 8 are now starting to come together

it's going to be a love triangle ain't it

I just thought the political landscape was pretty self-explanatory and one of the best decisions they made with this movie was keeping the politics to a minimum and focus on what is actually good about the SW universe.

For people in the know (like me, perhaps you?) they're simple enough.

But considering how many times the question gets asked here (and i'm pretty sure my brother and a friend asked that as well) means it wasn't really self-explanatory.

Otherwise backgrounds in the film work, only the political landscape, which is pretty fucking important for the setting regardless of one's feelings about politics, is kind of WTF in light of the Return of the Jedi.

(And even without ROTJ, people keep wondering why have both Resistance and the Republic.)

(Personally i always liked the (idea of) partial focus on politics in the prequels. It was different take on Star Wars. I like the idea of seeing what leads to the Clone Wars and the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire. Unfortunately that aspect was, like everything else, fucked up, partially because it was too overt and hamfisted.)

Find it hilarious the First Order created yet another Death Star when the consensus by the remaining Imperial leaders in the current canon books is that even the first was a mistake.

I think it falls right in line with the empire and the naziism they are based on. "Our ideas are not flawed we must go bigger"

I'm not questioning that she is, I'm asking why she is. Nothing is explained in this movie and this is kinda pissing me. She just enters the Falcon and does some heavy looping? She just picks up a light sabre for the first time and is able to fight Kylo? That doesn't make any sense.

If the Empire were space Nazis, I guess the First Order is the galactic version of Neo-Nazis.
