I think its incredible that Gwen has been out in full force promoting a character based on absolutely nothing, its genuinely remarkable to me, I imagine there has to be deleted scenes somewhere.

Also what the deal with Sidow? Was it just a cameo or am i missing something?

Yeah I remember watching a press conf a couple of weeks ago where Gwen was talking about how she was able to explore the character and whatnot. After watching the movie I'm like... what character? She was just a bit more important than the other troopers.

Are they currently filming EP8?

I believe Mark Hamill did some shooting for it while they were in Ireland, main cast start in January I believe.

I felt like Harrison Ford's performance was a bit flat. He didn't feel much like han solo to me, too quiet and gentle. It was like if Han Solo had gone a bit senile or was high the whole movie.

Now that all the callbacks are out of the way with this movie, I hope Episode 8 picks up the pace and actually does something interesting plot-wise.

Very good, though I expect people will not like how safe it is and how heavily it leans on the OT, especially ANH. I think Star Wars really needed this palette cleanser, though, to serve as a back to basics foundation for future films. They've got set-up for some real interesting directions in Episode 8 and 9, far more than TPM ever had for 2 and 3.

The fusion of modern and old effects, return to knight-style lightsaber combat, and jettisoning of pretty much everything about the Prequels are all very welcome.
Little disappointed that Phasma did absolutely nothing in the film though, for a very cool character design and fine actress. I hope she returns in the next films and has something to do. I'm not sure where Finn fits into everything, since it's pretty clear he was a decoy protagonist and Rey is the actual main character of the new trilogy.

Also, this may not have been made clear, was the Supreme Leader's hologram just scaled up, or is he literally like forty feet tall?

I think they already did some shooting presumably for the opening scene that will pick straight up from TFA.

Seemed like Han after aging 30 years and seeing his son turn evil.

Scaled up. The hologram felt very Wizard of Oz to me, it will be interesting to see the man behind the curtain.

So the soundtrack has released - is there any piece of music that is particularly stand out? I didn't notice during the film for anything like battle of heroes, across the stars or duel of the fates even.

What is meant to be the major "theme" for this film?

Thought it was great.

Absolutely fantastic casting for the new leads, Boyega, Ridley and Driver were brilliant.

I'm so happy the film turned out well.

I thought the random stormtrooper who fought with Finn with the shock baton thing had more screen presence than captain Phasma lol

For me it was when Han yelled 'Ben', genuinely spine tingling.

Definitely! That scene had such an impact, also when Han was telling Leia that he seen their son, and you could feel the emotion in his words. The biggest one for myself was when Rey found Luke, he had his back turned with the hood up, the music was amazing, genuine goosebumps!

Pretty good movie. Even though I knew and saw most of the spoilery stuff before the film came out, seeing it all together still got me good. I am surprised so many or debating the final battle though. I thought that was done well.

I am a bit bothered by some editing / plot in the middle of the film, as well as the whole BB-8 macguffin implementation. Also I found the score not very memorable. I hope we get some big dark side music in the sequels.

Another thing I missed:

For all the callbacks to the OT. Where was Poe's "all wings report in"-moment?

Though the whole assault on Starkiller Base should have played out differently. The X-Wings should have started their assault when Han dies and chewie pushes the detonator.

Now I as a viewer was very disconnected from the pilots that they might as well not have been there. And a 'report in' section would go along way to atleast give all the pilots a face.

Loved the movie, with the exception of a couple of really BIG nopes:

1- the whole Republic wipe sequence with the planet cannon from Gundam Seed. They didn't show the place once, then we just saw a glimpse of it right before it gets blown up. Would have a sequence taking place in the capital and a couple of minutes of additional CG cost THAT much?
2- the "awakening" during the sword fight. Seriously? she closes her eyes FOR FIVE FUCKING MINUTES?! Seriously?!
3- I felt the no kiss "romance" was too forced. She could have kissed him while he was into Odin sleep, OR he could have kissed her since it was established from the start of the movie that Finn had some sort of knight in shining armor complex.
My fear is that they will stall the romance for the entirety of the trilogy. I mean: you have an African-American lead, the hero of the story is clearly Ray (a girl), why get shy about a clear-cut romance between the two of them? Makes no sense. These are two kids who basically have being alone their entire lives, now they find each other and... this? It makes sense in Miyazaki movies, because the characters are children, but here? Not so much. My belief was not suspended.
Speaking of kisses, no elderly smooching between Leia and Han after they teased the hell out of each other as soon as they met again was also too forced. I don't think kids would have had their innocence stolen by some hospice-action on screen.
Other things that "ruined" the movie for me, but that I don't consider objective or sensible reasons, are:
- she's TOO HOT, I forget about anything going on in the movie everytime she is on the screen.
- even my love for Star Wars can't erase the absolute hype-state for Civil War and SupesVsBats. Sorry J.J.

Even based on the shooting schedule there wasn't much filmed with her. Just seems like a setup for later films in the trilogy.

Damnit why is every black dude an African-American? John Boyega is British :P

I can dig that, would be nice if they gave her some motivation though, she literally has no character other than "Slightly elevated storm trooper"

Did she even fire her gun?

When the Force Theme plays when Luke is finally revealed.

Just saw the movie. So happy Rey's the "Jedi" in this one. Not that Finn would've been a bad choice either, but man the moment when she grabbed the lightsaber was awesome (Force Theme kicking in and all).

I almost expected them to pull a fast one and cut to credits when Millennium Falcon left the rebel planet, but this ending was pretty damn cool, too.

Excited to see where this goes.

BUT WHY THE SWINGING CAMERA SHOT

I really wish he was in a dark cave or something, give it some atmosphere, weight

Dudes just chilling on a fucking Hill looking at the sea

I waited years for this moment damnit ;_;

I'd say there's some decent character analysis that can be taken from this.
Yeah. But really that's all. I was very disappointed with the overall plot. So similar to Star Wars it felt hackneyed and boring. I guess if you regard the film as a soap opera then it's fine. But there are no ideas in this film. Nothing really interesting. And the science is so whack it may as well just be magic. Though I have always regarded Star Wars as Sci-fantasy at best or just plain fantasy. It has more in common with Arthurian myth and Samurai than science.
Anyway, it was fun but dumb, which is fine.

He's old and wise, that's what old and wise people do i.e. look at the scenery what is this talk about a dark cave ? :P

There was laughs in the cinema. JJ really fucked that final epic scene up. Looked awkward as hell.

Yeah the helicopter camera shot felt really off to me.. like something from a Fast and Furious movie. It should've just stuck to singles of Luke and Fey..

Well I do consider it Space Opera, but I get where you're coming from.

I went in expecting this, very low expectations but I was surprised it wasn't actually the case imo. I thought they pretty successfully recaptured the Han and Chewie dynamic and charm. He might just look a little senile though.

I agree, did not like the way it was executed.

Also they didn't go full in to the Binary Sunset / Force theme as well, only played a little.

It was so goofy

Perhaps its just me, id been envisioning this scene for a couple of years now and it was just totally underwhelming.

I genuinely thought Carrie Fisher nailed it, Han was fine, exactly what I expected from an aged Solo and the fallout from his Son explained why he was more world worn.

The bit with Finn when talking through the plan. 'We'll think of something. We'll use the force'. Han: 'thats not how it works'.

That might be my favourite moment of the film. Fucking nailed it.

Glad that it seems like the film is really good, even if I'm not fussed about Star Wars myself.

I've been teasing my GF all week that I know what's going to happen. She's going to see it with her mum tomorrow. I know they'll have a great time now.

When I saw he was doing that, I imagined him seeing Rey coming and being like "oh shit, oh shit, gotta get on the hill, where did I put my hooded robe?"

Really silly, because it didn't make sense. But it was a fancy setpiece for better or for worse and that was the whole point.

Great, fun movie overall, glad I saw it before it could be spoiled for me at all.

At the European premiere Kathleen Kennedy said that every Episode 7 actor at the premiere will be in Episode 8, which includes Harrison Ford. Flashbacks I'd imagine? Could have easily been a little harmless fib as obviously she couldn't spoil Solo's death to the public, haha.

I can see them showing some flashbacks to Kylo Ren's childhood/upbringing involving Han.

Loved it! The casting, the characters, the photography, the humor, the right amount of fan-service, the action... Really good!

I need to re watch it though, it was a bit safe and it kind of felt like there was... something missing. Maybe it's because it's the first SW with no Lucas. The soundtrack was good, but nothing really touched me other than the use of old tracks. Seems like the poorest soundtrack of any Star Wars.

Still, fucking awesome, can't wait to see it again.

As far as going forward, I can see Luke being a big part in 8 but I can also see him not making it to 9 (in human form)

Anyone remember the early "spoilers" stating that the movie would open with a sewered hand flying through space? 😂
And Luke was captured by the Empire haha.

I'm sure there's some truth in some of it, but stories changed and wires got crossed and speculation took over.

She didn't want to spoil it, that was a PR stunt. We won't see him again, he won't go into another SW shooting, or maybe they shot some stuff already (tho I don't see any flashback happening in EP8).

Would be interesting to hear Arndt's treatment, noticed he got a writing credit

And given the large amount of screentime he had in this compared to Leia and obviously Luke, it was pretty clear this was his big swansong to the character.

They did a fine job with Chewie raging after Han is killed. Felt legitimate.

Any idea what race Snuke was? I thought he could of looked somewhat similar to Darth Plagueis' race then started thinking "WHAT IF IT IS HIM AND HE LIVED AND FIGURED OUT HOW TO CHEAT DEATH?!"

Quite liked the film but it wasn't without its flaws.
