I see your argument for the first point and I think you're right but I just think it was a bit clumsy and added too much to a movie with already too much in it. As for urgency, like they kept telling me that the base was about to fire but there were so many things going on at the same time it was hard to follow the actual panic of the base being about to fire.

We go from "THE LASER WILL FIRE IN 15 MINUTES!" to that really great but really slow scene with kylo and han, and then we have the duel. I watched episode 4 before this, and the death star scene has actual urgency behind it. Why? Because it's the only thing we're completely focused on so you're actually there in the moment throughout the whole thing.

Your post reminds me that this movie literally erased everything that was accomplished in the OT, and beyond. We even got a Vader wannabe roaming around.

For me is mostly that the more it went on the more I saw it coming. I was already thinking about it before the movie as "Someone important will die". Because they needed that "obi wan" moment. And it became pretty obvious it would be Han.

It's a downer, and a huge leaf turner for sure, but makes sense to me.
 
About the map, why even split it in 2, why did Luke to that?

Who was the original recipient of the second part they find at the beginning?

(yeah I know they probably don't know that themselves)

I want him to be more evil, more powerful, bring him back to the light side would be a letdown...

The only way Kylo can turn to the light side now is if it meet Naruto and it's not going to happen.
 
That's a thing who the hell was that guy at the start? was he a named character? I'm not asking for an EU styled saga of books about him but it would be nice to know his name.

As I said before, the worst part is that we got no Han/Luke reunion before it happened.

Didn't Luke leave it to whoever that old dude was at the beginning.
But yeah, it would be a bit stupid if you want to go into seclusion to leave a fragmented map that will lead to you whoever chases the McGuffin. I guess Luke put a force lock on R2 and made the droid his sword-in-the-stone, even if that doesn't explain the other part of the map.
 
Came back from the theater, thought it was good. Not great or anything, but enjoyable.

I liked how they made the stoopers capable in this one, as opposed to the usual moving targets.

Kylo taking of his mask was kind of a let dorn though. Didn't know about him beforehand, and apparently most of the audience didn't either. Dude really doesn't look menecing or evil. I couldn't hear his last speech with Han all that well because the theater was giggling/laughing :/

They reshot and rewrote the murder scene to turn it from "you're not my father" and instantly killing him in cold blood, to him actually listening to his father, despite failing.

No way they are killing him.

If anything he'll be haunted by his crime until it forces him to turn back to the light. He showed struggle. He had no struggle in the original script.

I'm assuming it made the character far too unlikable in intern screenings and they had to fix it for the sequels.

They needed a mentor death, Ford didn't want to star in another movie, so they decided to do that... Sigh.

Not sure what's worse, his actions or his face.

Luke almost immediately punks Vader worse than Vader did him near the beginning of the ESB fight.

The actor is 32 and the character is supposed to be late-20s.

The New Order really doesn't make sense to me. How do they manage to go around kidnapping enough kids that they end up with more manpower and resources than the freaking Empire, who had access to most of the galaxy?

Han Solo's whole death scene was super obvious and a big cliche

Overall it just felt like it relied way to heavily on the original trilogy, same characters, same type of enemy, same premise etc. Really hope the next 2 movies takes the series in a new direction

First impressions:

One too many Nazi speeches, too much relying on original trilogy sets (they managed to combine Hoth and Death Star into one reboot Trekky doomsday device), too much Ben aka Kylo Ren talking. Every dialogue scene with Ben was jarring. Too much awkwardness in the end.

More in-depth:

I felt Finn should've died, it would have made Rey much more stronger as a character in the end. Do Ben, Rey and Finn have to be there for the whole trilogy? Now it's obvious Ep. 8 will feature the adventures of Rey & Luke and Finn & co. I feel like Ben should have died too. His exit was incredibly serendipitous. Maybe Finn & Ben could have switched sides?

I feel like SOMEONE else should have died, there were just too many faces introduced for the sake of having a wider cast. Poe and Finn only complete each other because they are halves of a character.

I'm glad they finally killed Han but JJ Abrams did a terrible job with every pivotal plot scene. Han & Leia's reunion, the rebels' almost workmanlike plan to destroy yet another Death Star, Han's death, revealing Luke... Those scenes required so much more gravitas. Star Wars has been called a space opera but Ep 7 lacked the originals' theatricality.

I could nitpick about the flow of some scenes (like the outro) but overall I liked the down-to-earth feel sets and special effects. The pace was nice but the plot was always rolling. It never really took a breather, like looking at the twin suns on Tatooine, etc. It didn't feel too long, and the jokes were delivered well.

I think that the best scenario would be for him to go full on evil and super-powerful. It would be such a great ark to see him vulnerable, emotional and kind-of untrained in this movie and then through his commitment to the Dark Side to become the supreme big bad. It's like a proper prequel version of Anakin only no redemption, just hate and power - really show the full potential of the dark side.

He should kill Rey in episode IX too, after all the Marvel movies, Disney really needs at least Star Wars to have a memorable villain.

ok yeah I can see that. You have issue in how it was executed. There is a lot going on, and its easy to loose focus on the urgency. You basically didnt feel the urgency.
 
Can't believe ya'll are wanting the political backstory fleshed out. After the prequels, think I would lose my goddamned mind if I had to sit through more rubbish about trade disputes, unrest in the Senate, or any other such garbage.

I think the big thing about his struggle was it came across as "I know what I have to do" being he had to kill Han to fully accept who he was and not "I know what I have to do" being please help me come back to the light. He's either getting killed by Rey or killing himself.
 
Big star wars fan here, I Loved the film.

A few things.
Han dying, i love Han, but his death makes sense and it helps create an even darker bad guy. Good stuff.

Luke's daughter being bad ass! I approve!

Boyega, not so much.

Poe, awesome dude and great x wing fighter.

Disliked the reference to the old movies.
Hated the whole Death Star type scenario. They should have gone a different route with something entirely different and fresh.

Didn't like the bad guy in the hologram, his design could have been better more unique.

Luke looks bad ass, can't wait to see what he does in the next film.

This film helped set up next episode quite well, they must do something entirely new in the next film, it's going to be great for sure.

I did have to stifle a giggle when he took his mask off I admit

Just got home and absolutely loved this movie. Best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back. There were so man amazing scenes and the whole cast was really good (especially Driver).

The moment he said to chewie he could talk his way out of everything I knew he was a goner. I waited the entire movie to see his death, I just didnt take it as surprising I guess....

Kylo ren is such a crybaby imo.

he is basically a teenager wanting to be a sith. Best part was the Stormtroopers going full NOPE when they noticed he was raging.

Also, how does Rey has the knowledge to do Jedi mind tricks, lightsaber duels and force pulls ?

Overall i enjoyed the movie except for Kylo Ren being such a lame villain and Rey unexpected mastery in the force.

It's funny how I can suspend my disbelief for everything except for Finn not killing himself when he first fought with the light saber and then later when he survived for more than 2s against Kylo Ben. At least, with Rey, we see Kylo didn't want to kill her, but turn her to the dark side, also, the Force. And, no, the wound does not explain it at all.

Anyway, the movie felt like 3 hours and I think it suffers from being just a part of more to come, as in what happened in it didn't really feel like a complete story, but more like Star Wars Episode 7 Part 1.

The new cast did not disappoint, I just wish we had seen more from Poe. I though Carrie Fisher was tired. Ford, while just playing whatever at least seemed to be trying. And lol at all Mark Hammil did was stand there for 1 min.
