As for your second point. I am not sure what other urgency you want. The Starkiller Base ready to fire countdown was mentioned through out the finale. The thing was seconds away from blowing up the resistance base/planet. Was also a nice touch of showing it with the sunlight disappearing. Also the fight on the ground was spurred by the fact the planet was in the midst of imploding on itself.
I see your argument for the first point and I think you're right but I just think it was a bit clumsy and added too much to a movie with already too much in it. As for urgency, like they kept telling me that the base was about to fire but there were so many things going on at the same time it was hard to follow the actual panic of the base being about to fire.
We go from "THE LASER WILL FIRE IN 15 MINUTES!" to that really great but really slow scene with kylo and han, and then we have the duel. I watched episode 4 before this, and the death star scene has actual urgency behind it. Why? Because it's the only thing we're completely focused on so you're actually there in the moment throughout the whole thing.
