Just got back from watching it and I enjoyed it overall with some gripes.

Kylo really does seem like a lost child who has some major temper tantrums. Maybe he will grow up once his training is complete.

It's like a boxing or MMA. Two camps and the fighters are being trained for the next big fight.

Why was he just staring at the ocean and how long had he been doing that for when Rey found him.

Luke found Yoda's stash and has been staring at that ocean saying "whoa" for thirty years (he lacks the tolerance Yoda had built over the course of 900 years). Why you think his eyes were so red?

1) Empire guys building yet another deathstar that, while being more powerful has the same defensive weakness as the last one and 2) That the group fighting against them is the "resistance". Kinda goes against the resolution. The death star trench run and subsequent explosion is one of the most popular scenes in star wars right behind "I am your father" for me.

To their credit, at least The First Order build a hardened shield around the thing. But yeah, I agree about the neo-trench-run scene being underwhelming. It seemed like the main story on the ground hogged all of the focus, with just two or three segments that were like, "Let's check in with Black Squadron for a minute or two," before going back to the ground. I liked that A New Hope followed Red Squadron for the entire battle; made it feel much more impactful.

Those are clearly questions which will be answered in the sequel. How is Snoke a master of the Dark Side (but not a Sith)? Why does he appear to be badly scarred? Who are the Knights of Ren, really? It seems like they are a Dark Side order, separate in lineage from the Sith, composed of former Jedi pupils, corrupted by Snoke, but that's just a guess.

I speculate that Snoke is somehow connected to the original Jedi temple Luke is searching for. Seems to be an ancient-evil type villain.

Would have been cooler. Either way the random melee weapon stormtrooper scene was really weird and out of place. I guess they had to do something to establish that Finn wasn't good at saber stuff.

It's weird how they were being coy about Finn being force sensitive in the actual movie when the official trailers had him be the main force/lightsaber user. They set it up with Rey, but I don't think it was ever done for Finn.

I just remembered, people are questioning why Finn was able to use the lightsaber and even land a hit on Kylo before getting wrecked, but Finn is presumably trained in that electric baton like the stormtrooper that picks a fight with him, so he does have experience with hand to hand weapon fighting.

He also worked in sanitation, so he could have been practiscing with a broom handle.

If this movie had written and directed by George Lucas people would be killing this movie.

Of course, because George Lucas would not have made this good a movie. It's such a big change from the prequels; it's so nice to have actual humor, well direction for actors and tone, and high stakes action again in Star Wars.

Just got back. Really enjoyed it. Tons of fun & great action to keep you on the edge of your seat. My only issues were it was really heavy-handed on Episode 4 callbacks & putting their own spin of very familiar plot points, scenes, & material It didn't help I did the marathon & watched 4 so close to this; it really hammered home how many similarities the 2 films have.

It did have enough different though to really hook you for the story going forward. I just hope it doesn't follow the same arc as the OT did & Ren just goes full evil. I would hate a redemption arc for him ala Vader.

Scust at some of the disgusting slander of Finn here.

Dude was easily one of the best parts of the film. Boyega could have chemistry with a rock. I love that Finn is just a blank slate character with no magical lineage. Plus he's hysterical.
I'm with you. He was great and the most relatable.

If you asked someone in 1977 to make a sequel to Star Wars, this would be pretty close to it. Glad Harrison Ford got his wish, but Coruscant being destroyed was the real show stealer.
Was that Coruscant? I was trying to figure out which planets were destroyed. I know they named the system later, but I didn't recognize the name.

Yeah the trench run really wasn't all that great. Mostly it just seemed so easy for the rebels (and after all why not, it's like the third time for them at this point).

You'd think First Order would post up like a permanent squad inside the conductor...or sentinel droids..or something so that TWO GUYS wouldn't be able to wreck the entire operation with explosives. That with the whole Phasma thing, it makes them kiiiinda look like big chumps on the end of the movie

2. That Starkiller thing seemed a bit poorly thought out. Does it even move?

Does it need to move? It's laser shit is FTL.

My only real complaints have to deal with that thing; such a dumb plot device. The remnants of the Empire have managed to somehow build a Death Star x infinite under everyone's nose? A weapon that once it is discovered is dispatched by a couple of commandos and a squad of X-wings? Why did they wait until time traveling rom com had his Nazi rally to fire the weapon when they could have done so any time prior? Their attempted second blast appears to have drained all the stars in the solar system too. A two pump chump?

Was that Coruscant? I was trying to figure out which planets were destroyed. I know they named the system later, but I didn't recognize the name.

Not Coruscant. The New Republic moved the capital to a new planet. I guess Coruscant could have been one one those others that got shat on though.

My thoughts.

I loved the movie on so many levels. Effects were spot on. Finn was spectacular! BB-8 is adorable yet cool as fuck. Kylo Ren is such a sweet looking character. The shit he was doing at the beginning of the movie and the fact that he is straight up cold hearted. Ford was soooo spot on. I just can't say enough.

Saying that... I hope Phasma gets some ass kicking time next movie. Looks like the crew is Rey, Finn and chewbacca. I would like to see what else they get to complete the group??? Poe?????

Getting ready to crash as I just got home from the complete marathon. We started at 1 AM and I have not slept in like 31 hours.

But go see this movie. It is sooooo good!

I don't believe that was Coruscant. It was a different system altogether.

That wasn't Coruscant; it was some other Republic planet.

The movie didn't seem to mention what planet it was, only that it was "the Republic" and it looked exactly like Coruscant not only on the ground but from orbit.

They went through a lot of trouble to make it look like it was.

Was the planet that the first order destroyed coruscant? did they totally destroy the republic?

Even if it was Coruscant, it obviously wouldn't have destroyed the whole Republic, since Leia was still alive and I imagine the Republic would span many systems.

It would be dumb as fuck for Ben and Rey to be brother and sister considering she interacted with both Han and Leia and they didn't say a single thing.

The only way it looked like Coruscant is that it had buildings. The SW galaxy has more than one city planet.

I actually thought JJ should have shown some of the planet's names during the movie as they approached them.

As I mentioned the senate was moved to a different planet (which is canon btw).

They said it was the "Hosnian system."

Hey I'm in the spoiler thread now! Movie was fucking great.

Likewise Rey not only has the Force, but is obviously skilled with that staff.

I'm still thinking Finn ends up force sensitive. The way Ren looked at him, the ambiguos nature of his birth. It was obvious Rey was from day one, I mean look at the damn poster, and promotional materials. She's the next biggest thing aside from Ren. Holding out hope for Finn, imo he stole the show.

I love how JJ was able to do a flashback sequence without breaking the traditional Star Wars narrative structure.

Speaking of which....

It would be dumb as fuck for Ben and Rey to be brother and sister considering she interacted with both Han and Leia and they didn't say a single thing.

.....Rey lost her parents at a very early age as seen in the flashback, so if she is Han and Leia's daughter, she doesn't look like she did when they lost her.

They would be cousins. Rey is pretty clearly Luke's daughter, not Han and Leia's other missing child that they never mentioned.

Loved it completely.
Only minor gripe was the ease with which Rey took to the Force, but that may be addressed and even if not I am ok with it.
It is a minor gripe and I do not even care that much

Just finished watching it and have to say I enjoyed it but did have some gripes with the character development.

So Luke took Leia and Hans son and decided to teach him the ways of the force, and also to start a Jedi school. But that brings in questions about Rey, are Ren and Rey siblings? How do Han and Leia not acknowledge that at all? Is she Lukes daughter?! It seems like she began the training and then got ditched on jakku when everything went south at Lukes Jedi academy..

Or atleast that's what I gathered from the flash back..

I've got some questions about Finn and the lack of Droid storm troopers as well.

It's a copy and paste of episode 4 with anakin skywalker as kylo ren

I wouldn't go that far. But it definitely has a TON of moments that felt lifted directly from Episode 4 tweaked to fit the new plot. The dual flying/shooting moments with Finn/Poe & Finn/Rey felt a lot like Han/Luke firing the guns together. The entire climax with the X-Wings flying through a trench to blast a weak spot to destroy a world killing weapon....yeah, they one was a little too on the nose. They even had Leia & 3P0 looking over readouts as the countdown to destruction was being relayed. It was crazy.

That being said, it was still a really fun movie. And will look forward to watching it again. It did do a lot to set up the next films which was cool. I liked the new characters. Wish we had more time with Poe.

Watched just now. I loved it. Maybe the best Star Wars movie for me. But I'm sad about Han... he was my favorite character. The feels man... shit.

I was only 'concerned' about Ren's skills... looked inconsistent. I was surprised he lost to Rey but maybe it was due to the injury.

The trio Rey, Finn and Poe are very likeable.
