Quick question though. During Rey's 'Force Trip', was she literally there to witness the nights of ren murdering everyone as a child, or did the two happen at separate times?

i just can't believe Luke allowed this shit to happen--it's very irresponsible and unlike him

there's got to be a reason besides "legit shook" that Ben went dark

What do you mean? Kylo Ren kills the new Jedi, Luke hides his daughter on Jakku to keep her away from him, then goes to the temple for reasons. She's waiting for her family to come pick her back up again because she doesn't know anything about this Jedi thing, and Luke doesn't really intend to because it would put her in danger. Or something like that.

I still think they banged.

So does Finn have the Force? My take is that he obviously doesn't because for once, fuck the Force, a person can do a lot through sheer will and determination. I loved that he held his own for a while against a fairly trained Force user. We had heard a thread in the the days leading up to the movie that a non-Force user could never, ever use a Lightsaber effectivelyand that has definitely been proven wrong.

Luke never says "You have that power too" in ROTJ.

He doesn't say it at all in any of the alternate takes or recordings that Lucasarts have on file from the production of VI?!

Because that could be where. Or it could be a new line. Who knows.

One of the things I loved: Chewie getting a direct hit, straight gut shot, on Ren for killing Han. What a great moment. I was half-worried that Chewie was going to sacrifice himself into blowing up the pillars then too.

that would have made me ;_;
don't kill Chewie, he can't die

Just got back. Absolutely loved it. JJ Abrams is really great at creating chemistry between his characters. These characters are such a stark contrast to the boring ass ones we got in the prequels. Can't wait to see this again.

Also, so hard to watch Han die. Knew it was coming. I was squirming in my seat hoping he'd get out of there. =(

Thought it was pretty good but man was it kind of predictable.

I basically had a bingo board in my head the whole way that was getting filled up.

By the way, the Visual Dictionary is incredible. It basically shows everything they cut from the movie, like the entire sub-plot involving the Senate, Leia's representative in it, and the Republic's current capital, Hosnian Prime.

Basically, the Republic now chooses a different capital every so often, so that it doesn't depend as much on one single planet or centralized government. It helps with preventing a dictator from rising, but it became too slow to respond to the First Order. But the movie completely glosses over that, probably because Abrams was too afraid the similarities with the politics of the prequels.

For fuck's sake

The movie really, really needed something like this.

Rey's dream of the ocean with an island (what Ren sees when he is reading her mind) seem to hint that she is connected to Luke in a special way, if not his daughter outright.

Luke never says "You have that power too" in ROTJ.

Yep, he does, I watched it last night, but it is recut/edited out of context with a few pieces of dialogue missing.

"You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And... my sister has it. Yes. It's you, Leia."

I'd say there's more evidence that he's force sensitive than not. But impossible to say right now.

She really is a Mary Sue. I like her a lot but her lack of flaws is in and of itself a flaw.

What should have happened in that interrogation was Kylo getting his way but then feeling a sudden push back that unsettled him and him report to Snoke to inform him.

What we got instead was Kylo talking shit, getting mentally beat and then running off like a bitch.

The duel in the forest was pretty disappointing too. Injured or not, Kylo should've had them both easily. Finn vs Kylo is what Rey vs Kylo should have been like. A short confrontation wherein she acquitted herself well - all things considered - but still ended up having to make a tactical retreat.

Rey fucking up Kylo really was the nadir for me.

I thought it was pretty clear that Kylo Ren with some un-Vader-like tantrums and his pouting is a relatively weak "Sith" by PT and even OT standards. He's basically garbage until he gets serious training. He was emotionally distracted enough to get hit by a blaster and couldn't mentally shake off the pain like normal Force users. He got tested before the fight began and lost. I'm 100% sure that ESB Luke would have schooled him.

It's from ROTJ, but the ordering is different.

In the movie, Luke starts with "You have that power too," then goes into I have/my father has it/my sister has it. In the trailer, 'You have that power too' is moved to the end of the narration, to tease to the audience about a new Skywalker force user.

Movie felt weak and lost. No identity.

Unless you mean the planet destroying idea, or the sly references to past Star Wars movies (like X-Wings flying in an environment that has walls like a trench or escaping from inside a building with a fireball behind them), not sure what you'd mean.

Funniest part for me I think was when Kylo Ren was having a temper tantrum and those two stormtroopers nope'd the fuck out of that hallway

My thoughts too.

Damn I love Adam Driver in this

I was surprising how much I liked him; interesting character. And yeah, it does feel like this is what Lucas attempted but fumbled with Anakin.

Maybe it's just a result of contemporary VFX, but Ren seems significantly more powerful than Vader.

It was sadder to see him fall into the pit never to be seen again. Such a brutal way to kill an iconic character.

It was brilliant. Clear example of what sets this film apart from the trite shit that is the prequel trilogy.

I'm fine with that stuff being outside the movie for fans who are into it. General audiences don't care about space politics

Yep, no one wants that shit. We don't want the prequel trilogy again.

Besides Rey tapping into the force during the fight, the fight is just terrible. Such a boring duel. I don't need all the flips of the prequels but give me something better than what they did.

People laughed when Kylo took his mask off. Driver just isn't menacing and my sister said he was so ugly that it ruined the character for her. I liked him, though the second time he destroyed stuff was comically bad.

I didn't mind the nostalgia until half way through the movie when they just start bombarding you with it and you feel like your seeing the same stuff over again.

Finn has feelings for Rey, but Rey only sees him as a friend is what I got from the movie. Honestly Finn borderlines on creepy a couple of times.

The flashback was poorly executed. It needed to be longer and it was just badly cut. I couldn't hear anything that was being said during it.

Maz was a big let down. Didn't like her look and I thought the dialogue during her sequence was terrible.

The pace is terrible when the Resistance enters. I really wished they slowed down there and developed the characters and this new world more.

Snoke was cool. Poe was awesome, could totally be the new Han. Phasma shutting the shields off ruined her character. They talked her up as a badass and she gives up easily.

The score was alright. It was Star Wars, but nothing really stuck out to me.

The editing during the Luke sequence was bad. Just drags on for too long and becomes awkward. They did it just to not upset people that much.

I have no idea why JJ allowed Ford to make that face when he dies.

In the end the movie is fun, but the script is pretty bad. Too many holes for my liking.

There's obviously some big secret with Rey. When it is first mentioned to Ren that Finn and BB were helped by "a girl" he replies "what girl?" in a tone and manner as if there was a specific girl on Jakku he knew about. Also the scene when Maz asks Han "So, who's the girl?" they immediately cut away from the conversation.

I'm thinking she will end up being Luke's daughter, but I'm not certain. She's the child of someone important though, that's certain.

I'd say there's more evidence that he's force sensitive than not. But impossible to say right now.

I'm hoping they break conventions and Finn is some anomaly who develops Force sensitivity from NOTHING. Regular to Jedi from will, heart and determination. The PT got up its own ass by midichlorians and a sort of birth right, the Order of the Jedi, destiny, etc. that was off putting to audiences. No one cared about the Jedi in that trilogy. They were inhuman and boring.

So does Finn have the Force? My take is that he obviously doesn't because for once, fuck the Force, a person can do a lot through sheer will and determination. I think we'll find out in VIII if he does. If Kylo messing with Rey helped her tap into it then maybe Finn, who is not as strong in the Force, will have his awakening when he awakens. That could be it. I'd be interested to see him and Rey becoming Luke's stewards of the new Jedi Order, but it's not necessary.

Prior to the release I really wanted Finn to be Jedi, but he's so good as he is that it isn't really necessary. I hope he keeps rocking the saber though. Rey already got a staff and I feel that she'll be a dual bladed type like Maul.

That was great. Best Star Wars movie yet, IMO. The writing and acting were well beyond any of the other six movies, and the action wasn't quite as great as the ridiculous nonsense in RotS, but it was better than any of the other five movies. But the ridiculous nonsense of RotS wouldn't have fit the tone of this movie anyway, so that's fine.

I was a bit disappointed in the bad guys though. Phasma looked so cool yet did basically nothing. Hopefully it's true that she comes back in VIII. And Kylo Ren was kind of a bitch, and looked more goofy than menacing without his mask on.

Oh and I pretty much expected Han to die, so that didn't surprise me. I just couldn't imagine Harrison Ford signing on to do three more movies.

Also one lady in my theater was crying at the end. I thought that was funny.
